Chapter 227: Resettlement Camp
Chapter 227: Resettlement Camp
After waiting for about half an hour, Jiang Ning was almost boiling hot. Finally, sharp mouthed monkey finally arrive. He’s driving a hazardous materials vehicle.
“Sorry for keeping you waiting, sis,” he gasped as he jumped out of the car. “The road was terrible. It took me a long time to get here.”
“You drove this vehicle here, aren’t you afraid of attracting unwanted attention?”
“Well, I had no choice,” Jiannian explained, wiping sweat. “Sis, this is actually a water tank truck. The boss had it repainted to look old and marked it as hazardous materials.”
If they brought out a water tank truck now, those desperate refugees would tear the vehicle apart for water.
Jiang Ning inspected the vehicle, making sure everything was fine before speaking. “I want to ask you for a favor.”
Help? Did sis just say she needs help?!
Sharp mouthed monkey felt like the sun was rising from the west, surprised by this favor. “Sis, just tell me. I’d brave any danger for you.”
“Get me a high-power spraying machine.”
“A spraying machine? You mean an agricultural pesticide sprayer, right?”
Jiang Ning pondered for a moment. “I mean one with strong spraying power.”
Sharp mouthed monkey frowned. “Those machines are bulky, heavy, and hard to find. They’re usually submerged in floodwater during floods and become unusable. It’ll take at least half a month to find one.”
“No, I need it now.”
“Sis, even if you want me to risk my life, I can’t provide that kind of efficiency,” Sharp mouthed monkey lamented. “Those machines are probably broken, and I’ll need time to find and refurbish them.”
“I don’t need the machine. Find a way to fix the spraying device.”
Jiang Ning didn’t have time to wait and directly threatened, “I’ll give you five hours. If I don’t see a good spraying device, forget about getting any water from this truck.”
“What?!” Sharp mouthed monkey was shocked, his voice sounding like a squeaky gopher. “Sis, you’re my only sister, how can you threaten me like this? If you don’t give me water, the boss will definitely kill me!”
“If you don’t want to die, find a solution.”
Sharp mouthed monkey was exasperated but ultimately agreed. “Fine, I’ll stake my lifelong reputation on it. I’ll try my best to help you out, sis.”
After asking about the road conditions in Fengcheng, Jiang Ning arranged a meeting point with him and drove off.
Sharp mouthed monkey turned and ran, with only five hours, his life was at stake!
Avoiding the refugee settlement, Jiang Ning took the less crowded and remote routes.
Encountering several groups of people on the road, their eyes lit up at the sight of the car. Perhaps, they thought, they could snatch the car and its gasoline for food and water.
It was a chance for survival.
But their frail bodies, worn down by years of hardship, couldn’t even catch up with the car’s exhaust fumes.
There were also highway robbers who suddenly emerged from behind broken walls while lying in the middle of the road.
Jiang Ning was speechless. After more than two years since the apocalypse, couldn’t they come up with better tricks than this?
Did they really think she was blind? Couldn’t they see the gang of demons hiding behind the broken walls, armed with knives?
Jiang Ning didn’t brake and accelerated past them.
If they loved lying on the ground so much, they might as well stay there forever!
The water tank truck rolled over them, and the group hidden behind the wall, armed with sticks, chased after.
But no matter how fast they ran, they couldn’t catch up with the four wheels.
Arriving at the designated location, a crooked building with cracks everywhere, Jiang Ning didn’t hesitate. She drove the car inside.
Indeed, there was no one around. She brought both the car and herself into the space.
Moving the water tower, connecting it with the water pipe, and filling the water tank truck…
The task was simple but time-consuming.
By the time she finished filling the water, there was only an hour left for the transaction.
Jiang Ning left the space, climbed up the dangerous building cautiously, and chose a corner with good visibility and shade to keep watch.
Holding a small fan and enjoying a popsicle and two ice creams, Jiang Ning spotted a pickup truck slowly appearing at the end of the road.
She took out her binoculars to confirm it was Sharp mouthed monkey and his group.
Worried about safety, there were about four or five of them in total.
They were quite vigilant, keeping an eye on all directions.
After making sure they weren’t being followed, Jiang Ning came downstairs and brought out the water tank truck.
A few minutes later, the pickup truck arrived in front of the dangerous building.
Sharp mouthed monkey got out of the car. “Sister?”
After making them wait for a moment, Jiang Ning walked out from behind the car.
Wiping the sweat off his face, Sharp mouthed monkey complained with a sense of grievance, “Sister, you made me use up all the favors I have accumulated in this life.”
Finally meeting sis’s expectations, they successfully modified the spraying device.
They unloaded the machine, taught her how to assemble it, start the engine, etc…
Jiang Ning pretended to understand, “Hmm, hmm… hmm…”
She secretly recorded their conversation and would analyze it carefully later.
Water was scarce. Otherwise, they could have demonstrated it on the spot. “Don’t worry, there won’t be any problems. The spraying distance can reach more than ten meters.”
They also mentioned possible problems with novice operation and minor repairs, “If there are any issues, feel free to contact us. It’s under warranty.”
Jiang Ning thanked them. “My car hasn’t arrived yet. Can you help me move it in?”
While they went to check the water, she pulled Sharp mouthed monkey aside and secretly handed him two rows of medicine.
One row of cold medicine, one row of antibiotics.
Not much, but considering the current market conditions, they were definitely valuable.
“For you, keep it quiet.”
Sharp mouthed monkey didn’t look, but he could feel it was medicine. His eyes couldn’t help but tear up. Truly, sis’s care was better than that of his parents.
With no problem with the water, the group drove away in the water tank truck and the pickup.
Jiang Ning stored the spraying device in the space and waited for more than 20 minutes before driving away in her off-road vehicle.
It was already evening when she returned, and there was news from He Tianming’s side.
After demonstrating his weakness and arguing logically, the authorities expressed understanding of Aoyuan’s concerns and agreed to the request.
Aoyuan would hand over 6-8 buildings to accommodate refugees, which could earn them 5000 points. These points could be used to offset the purchase of housing supplies in the future new city area.
In addition, the authorities would send resettlement personnel to provide some relief to the refugees’ lives.
In terms of security, the municipal government had coordinated with Yuecheng to send a team to be stationed permanently to maintain the safety and operation of Fengcheng.
However, half of the military had been called to the military base, and the rest not only had to participate in the rescue of Yuecheng but also had to invest in rebuilding the military camp. At the moment, manpower couldn’t be spared.
After urgent coordination, it would take a few days at the earliest to send a team over. By then, they would be deployed to various resettlement points for stability. For now, only police and security patrol officers could be sent.
As a psychologist, this was the best result He Tianming could fight for.
He felt somewhat helpless but could only encourage everyone, “We should prepare for the worst, but with police and staff here, the worst might not happen.”
Everyone was uneasy but had no better options.
The most lacking thing now was water; they couldn’t even build walls.
He Tianming thought for a moment, “Buildings 6-8 haven’t been fully completed yet, leaving a lot of steel frames and movable panels. We can bury the steel into the soil and use the movable panels as isolation walls.”
It wouldn’t be particularly strong, but it would at least provide some isolation.
“It’s still not safe enough,” Jiang Ning suggested, “Each floor still has hardened cement and lime, which can be piled up on our side to form a fixed isolation zone.”
“Yes, we still have a lot of cement bricks…”
