Chapter 243: Traditional Chinese Medicine Research Group
Chapter 243: Traditional Chinese Medicine Research Group
Jiang Ning stayed firm despite his attempts to convince her, saying, “During that time, the conditions were tough. Even if there were herbs, they might have died.”
But now things were different. After several rounds of natural disasters, everything had a chance to breathe, and even wild vegetables were growing at the Fengcheng River.
Besides, even if there weren’t any herbs, they might find other medicinal plants. It was worth the trip.
After all, the two of them had limited medical supplies, which couldn’t cure all diseases. Illnesses didn’t discriminate, and what if they fell ill and had no medicine on hand?
Lying around every day had become monotonous. Going out to look for herbs would be a good way to exercise, so why not?
Huo Yishen agreed.
It’s better to go out now than to wait for another day. They set off immediately.
Jiang Ning opened the rabbit enclosure, “Do you want to come with me or stay home?”
Maybe they had really become smart. Since the last time she took them out, they’d been aloof upon returning.
In the past, they would hop to her feet vying for attention.
But now, they ignored her, munching on the hay without even lifting their heads.
Fine. Over the past three years, she had stockpiled plenty of rabbit meat which is enough to last a long time whether braised, steamed, spicy, or with chili oil.
She left them several bundles of dry hay and fresh water and left with peace of mind.
The road was difficult, but with Doudou and Coke, riding the little scooter was not safe, so they took the Hummer instead.
The roads were cracked, and ruins were everywhere. It made the journey incredibly tough.
Fortunately, Fengcheng was famous for its ring road, which allowed them to reach their destination by circling around.
When the highway cracked, they took side roads, stopping and starting. It take them four hours to cover the 80 kilometers.
They encountered two groups of robbers on the way. Jiang Ning, sitting in the passenger seat, couldn’t be bothered to talk, so she rolled down the window and pulled out the submachine gun.
The robbers, terrified, not only retreated but quickly cleared the roadblocks, saying, “Take care, sister, have a safe journey.”
At the foot of the dense forested mountain, she let Doudou and Coke out for a run and put the car into storage.
Jinshi Mountain hadn’t collapsed, but the film city and shops at its base were all in ruins. Remembering how splendid it used to be is really sad.
Walking up the winding mountain path for about half an hour, they suddenly heard a distant cry, “Help!”
The voices, both male and female, were filled with panic.
At this time of year, anyone coming to Jinshi was probably not ordinary.
Using binoculars, they saw several men and women surrounded by a gang of thugs with knives.
Sigh, it had been three years into the apocalypse, yet some people still dared to venture out in wild without solid survival skills. How inexperienced they must be.
Without a word, Jiang Ning handed the binoculars to Huo Yishen.
He took a quick look and, without hesitation, drew his gun and walked towards them.
His speed surprised Jiang Ning, but she swallowed her words.
The thugs had knives, but Huo Yishen had a gun. The situation quickly reversed.
Seeing no chance of winning, the thugs raised their hands in surrender and left.
However, Huo Yishen didn’t give them a chance.
He was very close and finished them off with a few shots from his nail gun.
He didn’t rush back but talked with the group for about ten minutes and then brought them over.
“Anning, they’re from Yuecheng, from the Provincial Health Bureau’s Traditional Chinese Medicine Research Group.”
The leader, a middle-aged man named Ma Guangnian, introduced himself, “Thank you for your help. We’re members of the Traditional Chinese Medicine Research Group. Due to the sudden natural disasters, many medicinal herbs have gone extinct. We came to Jinshishan this time to find herbs to bring back for indoor cultivation.”
“Traditional Chinese Medicine Research?” Jiang Ning looked surprised. “So, you must be quite knowledgeable about herbal medicine, right?”
Ma Guangnian modestly replied, “Well, a little more than the average person.”
Huo Yishen had been flipping through medical books for the past few months. Since he dared to bring them here, he must have tested them.
But Jiang Ning was still worried. “We’re also here to find medicine, looking for a life-saving herb for a wealthy person, called Polygonatum cyrtonema, Do you know what its effects are?”
This herb was uncommon, and if one wasn’t proficient in herbal medicine, they wouldn’t know its properties.
“Polygonatum cyrtonema, also known as solomon’s seal, is mainly used for injuries, fractures, rheumatism, tuberculosis, whooping cough…” Ma Guangnian not only listed its effects but also its usage methods, growing areas, and more.
Listening to him, he indeed seemed very knowledgeable.
The group had no strength but relied solely on their enthusiasm. Thinking back now, it was truly frightening. “Since you’re also here to find medicine, why don’t we team up?”
Jiang Ning considered for a moment. “Alright, shall we split the medicine we find in half?”
Both Huo Yishen and Jiang Ning had guns, and they had brought children and a dog along. Whether in appearance or spirit, they seemed quite capable. Ma Guangnian readily agreed, “Sure.”
And so, it was settled.
They didn’t take the tourist path but searched along the foot of the mountain, especially in damp areas.
Walking behind the two, Huo Yishen lowered his voice. “Ma Guangnian is a student of a professor that once went to Dongqiao Mountain together.”
No wonder, he brought them back despite his usual vigilance.
Jiang Ning was surprised. What kind of coincidence was this?
She hoped they could find the other medicine here, which would shorten the time it takes for research and development and prevent unnecessary delays.
Surprisingly, these people had little survival experience, but they knew a lot about herbs.
This plant was medicine, that plant was medicine. Even accidentally stepping on a stone could yield medicine. Truly, everything was medicinal; such was the wonder of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Grateful for Huo Yishen’s life-saving favor, Ma Guangnian and his team were eager to help. When they found medicinal seedlings, Ma Guangnian didn’t forget to verbally instruct, despite Huo Yishen’s lack of medical knowledge.
“This is Houttuynia cordata, it’s excellent for prostatitis…”
Huo Yishen, who was in good health, “…”
Doudou and Coke were on lookout duty. Their vigilant on all sides.
Ma Guangnian and his team were very happy. They dug up the surrounding soil along with the medicinal seedlings to increase their survival rate. “This trip seems to be the right choice. We’ll take them back and cultivate them well, and there will be hope for the future.”
“Yes, western medicine has been destroyed. Traditional Chinese Medicine is humanity’s last hope. I hope we can find more varieties this time and preserve the heritage of Traditional Chinese Medicine.”
“Plant life is resilient. As long as there aren’t more severe natural disasters, I believe they will recover quickly.”
Jiang Ning’s thoughts were on what lay ahead, which was even more frightening.
But she didn’t forget the purpose of this trip. She quickly focused her mind again on finding Polygonatum cyrtonema.
The base of the mountain was quite damp, good for plants to grow. With everyone’s help, they spent several hours and discovered dozens of different kinds.
For those with a larger amount, they didn’t dig them all up at once but left some to keep growing and reproducing in nature.
In the land of the polar day, where there was no darkness, even though it was already evening, Ma Guangnian and his team had no intention of going back. “Brother Huo, we’d like to finish searching Jinshi before leaving. How about you?”
