Chapter 278: Self Assured Smile
Chapter 278: Self Assured Smile
“Anning?” A surprised voice rang out, and Zhang Chao hurriedly walked out of the room, embracing Jiang Ning. “Finally, we see you. We went to Jinrong Community when we returned to Fengcheng, but it was all ruins. We thought something happened to you and Brother Shen.”
“Where’s Brother Shen?”
Hearing the familiar voice, Jiang Ning felt relieved.
It’s great, Zhang Chao’s humorous personality is still there.
However, there’s quite a big change in his appearance.
Rougher, but more mature in appearance.
The biggest difference between him, Lu Yu and Zheng Weili is that there’s still light in his eyes.
Probably being hurt by the aunts a lot, his inner strength has grown tremendously, especially after being nourished by love, even if he falls constantly, he can quickly get up.
Jiang Ning smiled, “He’s got something to do at home, he’ll come over next time.”
“Come, let me introduce.” Zhang Chao naturally put his arm around the sister’s waist. “Anning, this is my wife, Ding Qi. Aiqi, this is Anning we often mention, the three of us grew up together.”
Surprisingly, although it’s a sister-brother relationship, they look quite compatible in appearance and height.
Ding Qi isn’t a beauty, her face is rather serious, emitting an aura that keeps people at a distance, but she’s graceful in figure.
After three years of tempering, Zhang Chao has become more rugged in appearance, and he no longer looks weak in his posture, his face filled with a confident smile.
“Sister Aiqi.” Jiang Ning smiled and greeted, then gave Zhang Chao a punch, “Congratulations, you finally found a home.”
Just on shift rest today, Lu Yu came out from inside, running his hand through his messy hair, “Anning.”
Jiang Ning entered the house, lightly patted him, “How’s Weili?”
Zheng Weili tidied up a place for her to sit, “He massages me every two hours which is much more comfortable.”
The room smelled of smoke and medicine. She probably just drank medicine in the morning.
Seeing her in better spirits, Jiang Ning felt good too.
Three years of natural disasters, they’re still alive, and being able to reunite again, it’s something worth celebrating.
After exchanging pleasantries, Jiang Ning briefly explained the things after they parted ways to Zhang Chao and Lu Yu, “Huo Yishen and I went to the seaside to do business, selling some medicines at the same time. Which accumulated some savings just enough to buy a house in Guangming New City.”
Brother’s should be clear on the account, she took out the account book from her bag, “When you left, you left a batch of food and medicine. Food doesn’t store well, we’ve eaten it all, and some medicines that were about to expire were sold.
Antibiotics and other medicines are too precious, I’ve been reluctant to sell them. Expired medicines can still be taken, but I can’t guarantee their effectiveness.”
Saying that, she took out a bag of medicine from her bag, “The rest is here, you can divide it yourselves.”
Seafood dried goods, kernels, all poured out, “I’m afraid it’s not very safe here, so I didn’t dare to bring too much over. Ask me for more when it’s used up, or I can give it to you all at once, whichever method you think is safer.”
Saying that, she handed the account book to Zhang Chao, “I’ve recorded what the expired medicines were exchanged for, it can be exchanged for food or medicine, or if you need something, I can find someone to exchange it for you.”
At the 18th floor, Jiang Ning and Huo Yishen took care of 1803, they knew it very well.
The food and medicine left behind, supposedly for 1803’s preservation, but they never really thought about taking it back.
Unexpectedly, Jiang Ning not only preserved it for them but also generously took it out.
For a moment, the three of them felt extremely complicated, especially Zheng Weili.
After two years apart, they had witnessed a lot of the evil side of people. They’d fight fiercely over even a moldy steamed bun, especially her brother and sister-in-law who acted worse than animals…
But Jiang Ning remains unchanged. She’s still willing to take care of them.
Zheng Weili’s eyes felt sore and she turned her face away, looking out of the window.
Who wouldn’t want medicine, but Zhang Chao reconsidered and pushed it back, “Anning, these were originally for you and Brother Shen. Initially, we were afraid you wouldn’t accept them, so we found an excuse.”
“We might be down and out now, but we can’t be untrustworthy to you.”
He could be wicked to others and even dared enough to go out with a knife to rob, but he couldn’t be untrustworthy to Jiang Ning. This was the ultimate bottom line for their friendship.
Lu Yu also wanted it for treating Zheng Weili’s illness, but… thinking about the past, he held back from saying it.
“Who do you owe this to?” Jiang Ning wasn’t just pretending anymore since she brought it up. “When we went to get medicine, all of us had an equal share so we didn’t need to take any. Those who need treatment should get it, and those who need to trade for things to make life better should do that. Don’t fuss over it. Don’t act stubborn.”
The two looked at each other, and it was Zhang Chao who spoke up, “Alright, we won’t stand on ceremony with you. When we earn some in the future, your share won’t be left out.”
Jiang Ning continued to take things out of her bag, herbal medicine for Zheng Weili, electronic products to pass time for both families.
Zheng Weili took out a box of fever-reducing medicine, “Anning, this medicine is for your herbal medicine. If it’s not enough, I’ll owe you first.”
Both families might be down and out, but their characters hadn’t changed much from before.
“Alright, I won’t stand on ceremony with you all.” Jiang Ning gladly accepted, “Look through the account book, let me know in advance if you need anything, and I’ll figure out a way then.”
Although they were down to their last penny, being a public security patrol officer still earned them something. It’s just that dealing with thugs and robbers posed a particularly high risk.
As long as Zheng Weili’s illness was cured, the two families might not become rich, but having enough to eat and wear wouldn’t be a problem.
This was also why they didn’t become police officers but insisted on being public security patrol officers.
With their skills, being a police officer was no problem at all, but being a police officer was more than just a job, it was a responsibility.
Wearing that uniform, they would feel guilty when taking unowned items, but being patrol officers, they wouldn’t.
While Jiang Ning was providing acupuncture to Zheng Weili, she chatted with Zhang Chao and Lu Yu while occasionally stealing glances at Ding Qi.
She resembled a solitary wolf, detached from the world, and self-reliant. She sat quietly beside him without speaking, appearing out of place with the surroundings, yet perfectly at ease.
Jiang Ning could tell that she was a strong-willed sister and felt that Zhang Chao was more like a passerby or a rest stop to her.
Capturing the heart of this sister wouldn’t be an easy task.
Observing her aloofness, Jiang Ning noted that she didn’t appear to prioritize gains or losses. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have been willing to trade goods for medicine to help treat Zheng Weili’s illness.
From this, it could be seen that she could still get along with the three.
After the acupuncture was done, Lu Yu invited Jiang Ning to have lunch, but she declined.
“It’s not convenient for you guys to cook here, even boiling porridge has to be done while watching out for others smelling it. Whenever you guys have time, come to my place, and we can gather like we used to.”
Jiang Ning got up to leave and suddenly remembered something, “Do you still have your walkie-talkie?”
When they were scavenging outside, they encountered robbers, and during the fight, they lost the walkie-talkie given by Huo Yishen.
However, Ding Qi still had one.
Knowing that her walkie-talkie had an effective communication range of 10 kilometers, Jiang Ning was very happy and informed them of her communication channel, “Keep in touch more often, for anything. Especially Zheng Weili, if you’re not feeling well, say it in time, don’t keep everything to yourself.”
She brought a solar charger over, but seeing that Zhang Chao had one in his room, she didn’t take it out.
