Chapter 529: Only Targeting Her
Chapter 529: Only Targeting Her
After a small demonstration, they continued to move forward.
The sound of gunfire would attract the attention of the security outpost. Even if the survivors were unwilling to let them, no one dared to do it.
Who made Fengcheng Base so tough? Even if they were on the outskirts, they would be expelled as long as they committed a serious crime. In severe cases, they would even be hanged.
At first, people didn’t believe it, but many were truly hanged as a warning.
They were not in his territory, but they had to obey his rules unconditionally. Who could they even complain to?
Despite this, there were still many survivors, especially those who were weak.
As long as the Fengcheng military took charge, their safety was somewhat guaranteed.
From a distance, Huo Yishen sensed something strongly. “We’re being watched.”
Jiang Ning felt the same. “It must be the patrol soldiers at the security outpost.”
The three of them continued to move toward Fengcheng as if nothing had happened.
There was a huge stone in front of the city gate, on which the two words “Fengcheng” were carved. The bold strokes carried an air of strength and movement, which showed the skill of the carver.
Jiang Ning stood in front of the stone, and her eyes couldn’t help but feel a little sore.
There used to be a stone at the entrance of Fengcheng Park, and even the handwriting was almost the same.
For a moment, she was lost in thought. The prosperous city that raised her, after experiencing countless storms, finally sank in a natural disaster, but now it seemed to be back.
Many memories rushed into her mind.
Jiang Ning stood in front of the stone for several minutes before calming down.
As the evening set in, she observed the city ahead.
It stood on the wasteland. The city gate was a stone wall, and the electric grid spread into the distance, connected by a mud wall in the middle.
Judging by the construction, the city had likely been built in less than half a year.
To the right of the gate, a faint light illuminated a sign that said, “Reception Office for Chinese Survivors.”
The three of them walked toward it under the cover of the night.
The staff inside were wearing military uniforms. “Welcome to Fengcheng.”
Jiang Ning stated her purpose. “Hello, we are from elsewhere. What conditions are required to enter Fengcheng?”
“Are you looking to stay temporarily or become a resident?”
Jiang Ning thought for a while. “What’s the difference?”
“The requirements are different,” the staff explained. “Temporary residents need to pay half a pound of food every day, and the stay in the city cannot exceed five days. Any dangerous weapons are not allowed to be brought into the city.
As long as the residents pass the interview, they do not need to pay any food, and they can also be allocated land, but all dangerous weapons they carry with them will be confiscated.”
To be honest, Jiang Ning still had a psychological shadow from the assessment at the southern military base. The overwhelming pressure, where they took away even her basic dignity, made her very uncomfortable.
After a brief pause, she decided, “We’ll register for temporary residence first. If we decide to stay, can we change to become a resident later?”
“Yes, but you need to be interviewed again.”
Jiang Ning thought it was okay, so she signed up for the interview.
Turning left from the reception desk, the staff kindly reminded, “Comrades, you must answer the interview questions honestly. If any major lies are discovered, you’ll be permanently banned from entering the city.”
This wasn’t an interview; it felt more like an interrogation.
Jiang Ning frowned but still expressed her gratitude.
There was only one interview room, and you had to wait in line.
Jiang Ning was the first one. She knocked on the door and walked in.
The interviewer was a man who looked about forty-five years old. He was wearing a military uniform, but his face was quite gentle and approachable, without the usual seriousness or fierceness seen in most soldiers.
The interview began simply. The man smiled and asked, “What’s your name?”
After more than ten years of natural disasters, who still carries an ID card with them? Jiang Ning originally wanted to make up a name, but his friendly attitude reminded her of He Tianming.
If she’s not mistaken, he should be a psychologist in the army.
Military psychologists are more sensitive than ordinary ones. They seem easy to get along with, but they are just trying to make you relax. They can capture the information they want from your words and actions.
No wonder many Chinese survivors were turned away.
Jiang Ning said truthfully, “Jiang Ning.”
The man was slightly startled, but he concealed it well. “How old are you?”
He asked about her height, education, household registration address, in a relaxed but detailed manner.
Jiang Ning answered truthfully.
He suddenly asked, “Have you killed anyone?”
“Yes.” Jiang Ning didn’t lie. “And quite a few.”
“Why did you kill people?”
“They provoked me first. I didn’t want to die, so I had to kill them.”
The interviewer changed the subject. “You are in better condition than 99.9% of the survivors. How did you maintain it?”
“We used to stay in a military base in the south. We exchanged our points for a submarine and stored a lot of food. After the land sank, we kept floating in the ocean. Later, we floated to the Arctic to survive and caught crocodiles and seals there…”
Jiang Ning mixed the truth and falsehood.
“After leaving the Arctic, we found a new land to live on. When we got bored, we stopped and walked along the way. Before we knew it, we arrived in Fengcheng.”
The interviewer listened quietly but didn’t say anything back. “You came in with two big bags on your back. What’s in them?”
Only a fool would lie to a military psychologist. Jiang Ning replied, “One of them contains a dog we’ve been raising. Later, we found a wolf in the Arctic, and now they’re a pair.”
The interviewer didn’t ask any more questions and asked Jiang Ning to go out and wait for the news.
In total, they talked for almost 20 minutes.
When she came out, she said a few words to Huo Yishen and Doudou.
However, the next person came out in less than five minutes.
Jiang Ning was speechless.
Could it be that they were targeting her alone?
The results came back quickly. All three were granted entry into the city, but their weapons had to be left with the reception center for safekeeping. They were also advised against bringing their wolf-dog pair into the city.
“If you insist on bringing them, they must be properly restrained. If they harm anyone, and the situation is severe, they will be put down,” the staff warned.
For special cases, the animals could be placed in temporary care, but this required payment in supplies.
Jiang Ning didn’t hesitate. “We’ll keep them leashed. If anything happens, we’ll take responsibility.”
They asked for a temporary stay for 3 days and paid a total of 4.5 pounds of food.
The staff suggested, “The main urban area is more than ten kilometers away from the entrance. The city has good security, but it is late at night now. We recommend that you enter tomorrow morning.”
There is a public rest area at the reception desk, which is free.
Jiang Ning did not expect Fengcheng to be so big. “…”
The rest area wasn’t very large. It contained a few wooden beds but no other survivors.
The three sat down to rest and took a few bites of dry food.
The wolf-dog pair remained vigilant, lying quietly on the floor but keeping their ears perked up.
After carrying dozens of kilograms of meat for a long journey while staying on high alert, Jiang Ning felt tired and wanted to take out a piece of cloth to spread on the wooden bed to rest.
Unexpectedly, the sound of a car engine shutting down came from outside.
Then, steady and strong footsteps followed.
From the sound, it seemed that they were running toward the rest area.
Jiang Ning stood up and turned her head to look, only to see a tall and imposing figure walking in, and his sharp gaze immediately fixed on her.
When he saw her face, his expression softened.
His lips moved slightly before he finally found his voice. “Jiang Ning.”
