Chapter 552: A Heartfelt Talk? Not a Chance
Listening to his words, Jiang Ning couldn’t help but smile. “Director Xiao, no matter how precious medicine is, its purpose is to save lives. If it can’t save anyone, then it has no value.
I’m not lacking anything for now, so consider this my way of repaying you all for your hard work in building and protecting the base.”
Watching her leave, Director Xiao couldn’t help but sigh. The chief was truly blessed to have such a good daughter.
Thinking of his wife and child who had passed away years ago, and realizing that he was all alone, he felt a wave of sorrow wash over him and couldn’t help but envy the chief.
When Jiang Ning returned home, she prepared three doses of medicine for Director Xiao and asked Doudou to deliver them.
Thanks to strict firearm regulations, the base was relatively safe.
Besides, Doudou was quite capable and always carried weapons. If anything happened, others would be the ones at a disadvantage.
Jiang Ning then entered her space and started searching around. She spent most of the day gathering everything that Rong Dashao had asked for.
Thankfully, she had stocked up on all sorts of supplies before the disaster. Otherwise, people might have been forced to endure unbearable hardships.
The next day, Rong Sanshao arrived with a few workers to move the supplies.
After repeated setbacks, many survivors had given up on farming. No matter how hard they worked, they couldn’t even fill their stomachs.
As a result, many people sat by the roadside, looking for any kind of work.
Rong Sanshao had also done odd jobs before, so he knew many hardworking individuals. He specifically chose those who wouldn’t slack off.
In just a few days, the framework for the glass greenhouse was already standing, drawing a crowd of onlookers.
Even though the greenhouse didn’t belong to them, as long as it kept producing crops, everyone would benefit from it in some way.
No matter what, its presence gave countless people in the base a sense of comfort, as if their harsh lives had a glimmer of hope again.
Curious onlookers couldn’t help but wonder who owned it.
“Must be someone really impressive,” they murmured.
Someone well-informed whispered, “I heard it’s the chief’s daughter.”
“With the chief backing her up, of course she’s capable.”
“That’s where you’re wrong. They just reunited not long ago. She doesn’t rely on her father—she depends on her husband.”
“Who’s her husband?”
“You must have been hit on the head. They managed to bring back cars and glass, so they clearly don’t lack food or supplies. They’re definitely well-fed and in good shape. One’s young, and the other’s beautiful. It’s a perfect match.”
“Ahhh, I think I’ve seen them before! The guy’s tall, cold, and super handsome, like a movie star. And the girl—she looks young, fair-skinned, and full of confidence.”
At this point, it was impossible for Jiang Ning to stay low-key.
She confidently stood beside Huo Yishen and inspected the construction site.
Rong Sanshao had done a decent job—he hired diligent workers who gave it their all, hoping to earn more food and, ideally, secure a job on the farm once the greenhouse was up and running.
The frame was solid, and since the Rong family had been in real estate, Rong Sanshao was no stranger to construction, and he kept a close eye on everything. Even Rong Tingting was no exception.
Rong Sanshao came over and said, “Sister, the greenhouse framework is almost done. Just three more days, and it’ll be complete. Should we start planting immediately?”
Jiang Ning nodded. “Yes. For anything related to planting, you can ask Doudou from now on.”
Doudou had grown up. Even Rong Tingting, who was a few years younger, was already capable of handling responsibilities on her own. It was time for Doudou to become truly independent as well.
When Rong Tingting saw Doudou, her eyes lit up, but then she hesitated, feeling a bit self-conscious.
Doudou was young and beautiful, while she looked like a beggar in tattered clothes.
But Rong Tingting quickly adjusted her mindset. The disaster had been hard on everyone. Doudou was the only exception in the entire base—there was no point in comparing herself to her.
Third Uncle had already given her an opportunity. As long as she worked hard in the base, her days would only get better.
Doudou eagerly took on the task and said excitedly, “Brother, Sister-in-law, I can do this!”
Jiang Ning rested her hand on Doudou’s shoulder. “Do your best. This is your time to shine.”
After returning from the plantation, Doudou immediately began working on the planting plan.
Each greenhouse covered an acre. The first one was designated for mulberry saplings, herb seedlings, and sweet potato sprouts.
The eggs in the incubator would hatch in about ten days, and it was time to sow the vegetable and grass seeds as well.
The high-temperature fish cakes lacked nutrition, and protein intake mainly relied on maggot farming. Since people at both bases were already consuming them, safety shouldn’t be an issue.
Doudou decided to return to her old trade—raising maggots. It would help the poultry grow faster.
As for cotton and potatoes, they could be put into production as soon as the greenhouses were built.
Doudou finalized her plan and handed it to Jiang Ning.
Jiang Ning pointed out a few details that needed adjustment. “Looks good. Let’s go with your plan.”
Feeling confident, Doudou packed some food and went to the site herself to oversee the work.
Every evening, she would return to discuss the construction progress and details with her brother and sister-in-law.
Growing up under their care, Doudou had developed a meticulous nature. She could easily spot those who flattered her with ulterior motives.
She knew when to keep her distance and when to extend kindness.
But trust? That was out of the question.
After all, her sister-in-law had a secret to keep.
Three days later, Doudou happily announced, “Sister-in-law, the greenhouses are ready! I asked Brother Rong to hire some temporary workers to help with planting and seedling cultivation tomorrow.”
Jiang Ning understood instantly and took out several bags of seeds she had prepared in advance from her space.
Doudou suddenly remembered something else. “Sister-in-law, the military is recruiting today.”
While resting, the workers who built the greenhouses had mentioned that the base had discovered coal and limestone deposits. Due to a shortage of manpower for excavation, they were recruiting survivors from outside the base to work in the mines.
Jiang Ning pondered for a moment. It seemed like Gu Tinglin was making his move.
Doudou’s mind was already calculating. “With them recruiting more soldiers, supplies will become even scarcer. That means the food and medicinal herbs we’re growing in the greenhouses will be in high demand. We’ll be able to trade for more land and grow even more crops!”
In short, she was full of motivation.
Seeing Doudou so full of energy and determination, Jiang Ning and Huo Yishen felt hopeful for the future.
Just after dinner, Gu Tinglin arrived.
He called Jiang Ning into the study. “Have you heard about the military recruitment?”
Jiang Ning nodded. “I just found out.”
Gu Tinglin got straight to the point. “Anning, natural disasters are unpredictable. I’ve lived this long, but no one knows what tomorrow will bring. You need to become stronger—only then will others not dare to covet your secrets.”
The moment he decided to look for Huo Yishen, Jiang Ning knew this would happen.
“The base needs to develop rapidly, and your supplies need a legitimate channel to flow through. That’s why I want you and Ah Shen to enlist.”
Jiang Ning had anticipated this, so she wasn’t surprised. “Which department?”
“The Fireseed Retrieval Unit. It’s a newly established division.”
Jiang Ning raised an eyebrow. “Created specifically for me?”
Gu Tinglin didn’t deny it. “With the worsening climate, the base’s development has stagnated. The only way to break the deadlock is to recover the scattered Fireseed Boxes and use industrial advancements to turn things around.”
Jiang Ning had a stockpile of them in her space, and this was the perfect opportunity to make use of them.
Most importantly, ordinary soldiers had to rely on years of service or military merit for promotions. But finding the Fireseed Boxes was the fastest shortcut.
