Chapter 563: Returning with a Full Load
Chapter 563: Returning with a Full Load
The group didn’t waste any time and headed to the next salvage site.
It was less than two nautical miles, and they arrived quickly.
Fortunately, the shark didn’t follow them this time, making the operation smooth and effortless.
More than 700 nautical miles from Fengcheng, the submarine discovered another batch of containers—more than twenty of them.
But they were just ordinary shipping containers, likely overturned during the tsunami.
With their main mission completed, the team started considering whether they should salvage the containers.
First, the supplies that could be found on land had already been looted by the base, and only the ocean still held unlimited possibilities. Second, even if the items in the containers were ruined, the containers themselves could be brought back and repurposed into houses, which would be much more convenient than living in tents.
Of course, the final decision rested with Jiang Ning, who had the golden finger.
Having lived two lives, Jiang Ning could easily read the room.
Gu Tinglin had carefully selected this team, and in the future, they would belong to her and Huo Yishen.
To win them over, aside from strength, both kindness and authority were needed.
She couldn’t be living in a red-brick house, eating meat and drinking wine every day while they were crammed into tiny tents.
“There’s still plenty of time. I’ll retrieve the containers up for you. That way, you’ll have better living conditions,” Jiang Ning said with a smile. “But once the houses are ready, you all owe me a housewarming feast.”
The team members were amused. “No problem, we’ll take turns hosting so you can enjoy three days and nights of feasts, Sister Ning.”
When Sister Ning took action, everyone could tell how capable she was.
Twenty-six containers, all neatly arranged on the transport ship in less than half an hour.
That evening, less than 200 nautical miles from Fengcheng,
Jiang Ning used the cover of night to place the large transport ship in the water, with everything stacked neatly in the containers.
When the team members woke up and surfaced for air, they were stunned to see the transport ship quietly docked at sea. Their eyes nearly popped out.
There were six Fire Seed Containers… Wait, why were there seven?
After the initial shock, they started thinking deeply about it.
When they boarded the transport ship, they found the deck covered in heaps of seaweed and kelp.
With the sun shining bright and the weather clear, they quickly spread them out to dry.
The Fire Seed Containers were locked with sensors and passwords, so they could only treat the regular containers as mystery boxes and crack them open one by one.
These shipping containers had been underwater for a long time, but a layer of mud had protected them from serious corrosion. At least their exteriors were intact, and they still made a crisp sound when knocked on.
The team didn’t have high hopes and assumed that the goods inside had likely been ruined by water.
But obtaining 26 containers was already quite good.
Bored on the sea, they decided to clean them up and bring them back to reduce the weight and save fuel for the transport ship.
But when the container doors opened, everyone was stunned.
Inside was fabric, and it was completely undamaged.
It seemed that the shipping company had taken extra precautions to waterproof the containers.
One entire box was filled with denim fabric.
After the initial joy, they moved on to open the second box.
It was also fabric, and it turned out to be synthetic fibers.
All 26 containers, without exception, were filled with fabric: cotton, silk, chiffon, plain linen, woolen products, and so on.
There were dozens of different kinds of fabrics, and the quality was excellent.
Years of drifting at sea had made clothes scarce—both saltwater and time destroyed them quickly.
Their conditions were relatively better, at least they had military uniforms to wear, but ordinary people… it wasn’t an exaggeration to say they were barely clothed.
But what could they do? Cotton planting had failed multiple times, let alone raising silkworms to weave fabric.
The 26 boxes of fabric were enough to make several sets for everyone at the base.
And it was thanks to Jiang Ning that the base was able to obtain this batch of supplies so easily.
The team was greatly encouraged and looked forward even more to the seven Fire Seed Containers they brought back.
Jiang Ning hadn’t expected to be this lucky.
Since they were close to the base, she didn’t stay on the transport ship. Instead, she returned to the 2688, while Xu Kaitai piloted the nuclear-powered submarine.
The team returned the same way they came.
Around evening, the transport ship entered Fengcheng’s waters.
The soldiers on duty at the dock almost had their eyes fall out when they saw the returning team, fully loaded.
The port wasn’t well-equipped, so the transport ship couldn’t dock directly. A patrol boat was sent to pick them up.
After some discussion, Huo Yishen and Xu Kaitai decided to return to base to report to their superiors. Zhang Li and the others had no concerns; they were already under the Special Command and the ship had rooms. The living conditions were much better than on land, so they decided to stay on the ship and wait for the handover.
Jiang Ning arrived at the shore by boat.
Rong Sanshao was already grinning as he waited. “Sister! Brother-in-law! Vice Captain Xu! Welcome home!”
He looked like he had taken some kind of rejuvenation pill. Jiang Ning narrowed her eyes and asked, “Got promoted?”
No one knew him better than his sister!
Rong Sanshao had indeed been promoted again—he was now in charge of two shifts at the dock’s outpost.
Having just finished his shift, he eagerly said, “Sister, let me take you home.”
There was no need to say more; his car addiction was acting up again.
Jiang Ning saw right through him but didn’t call him out. Instead, she tossed him the keys.
Rong Sanshao was overjoyed. He first dropped Huo Yishen and Xu Kaitai off at the military base before leisurely driving Jiang Ning home.
“Sister, everything at home is fine. You and brother-in-law don’t have to worry. Father’s health is getting better, and Doudou hasn’t lost a single hair.”
Jiang Ning took a deep breath and pretended to nap.
Rong Sanshao kept talking non-stop. “The glass greenhouse is fully built and planted. Doudou is probably still at the farm right now—I’ll go pick her up later.”
Jiang Ning frowned.
“By the way, Bai Xue had pups…”
Jiang Ning couldn’t hold back anymore. “Are you hanging around my house every day?”
“Of course, the chief’s health hasn’t fully recovered, and Doudou is so busy she can’t even catch a break. Someone’s gotta help out.”
Jiang Ning felt a headache coming on. When they arrived home, she flat-out refused to let him in.
Thankfully, Rong Sanshao knew when to back off and didn’t insist on staying for dinner.
Before she even opened the door, sounds of “woo woo woo” and “aow aow aow” came from inside.
As soon as she cracked the door open, Coke pounced on her and jumped excitedly while pawing at her non-stop.
Bai Xue was more reserved but wagged her tail happily.
After a long separation, Jiang Ning’s heart softened, and she crouched down, affectionately petting them.
Coke grabbed her pant leg and tried to drag her into the house, eager to show off the pups his wife had given birth to. “Woof!”
One female pup, three males.
Bai Xue had plenty of milk, so the four chubby pups were well-fed, though their eyes hadn’t opened yet.
The sea life was too dull, and now that she was home, everything felt great. She couldn’t help but keep petting the pups.
Bai Xue watched nervously from the side, unwilling to let her guard down.
Coke, on the other hand, was carefree, constantly pushing his pups toward Jiang Ning. His brown-black dog face beamed with pride as if to say, “Hey, look at me, I’m so impressive!”
Uh… Sure, he’s impressive. He had fun making them and then dumped all the responsibility on Bai Xue.
Jiang Ning tossed some delicious legs of meat to the couple. “Go play over there.”
As she petted the chubby pups, she couldn’t help but think of the three stray pups. She wondered how they were doing.
After being away for over a month, she noticed a new glass greenhouse in the backyard.
Inside were various young poultry—chickens, ducks, geese, quail, and hens.
There were dozens of them in total, varying in size, likely hatched in batches.
The feeders contained broken corn kernels, chopped vegetables, and grass.
The poultry shed was also bright, well-ventilated, and spotless.
And the rest of the house was the same.
Jiang Ning couldn’t help but laugh. Doudou truly was a hardworking little bee.
Just as she returned from the backyard, she suddenly heard footsteps.
They came from the side. Gu Tinglin was walking over from next door.
He still looked thin, but in good spirits.
Coke and Bai Xue rushed over, wagging their tails to greet him.
“Woof woof woof.”
“Awoo awoo awoo.”
The side yard was a vegetable garden, and to avoid the dogs trampling it, Gu Tinglin said sternly, “Attention!”
The two dogs obediently stood up, drooling as they stared at the dog food in his hand.
Hearing footsteps in the yard, Gu Tinglin looked up.
The father and daughter locked eyes.
