Chapter 565: Entangled
Chapter 565: Entangled
Doudou didn’t know how to respond. She even felt a mix of anger and embarrassment.
Young men, middle-aged men—people always found reasons to gather around her and Tingting, acting eager and enthusiastic.
A few nights ago, when they returned, they even staged a heroic rescue, which made Doudou so angry that she nearly dislocated their arms.
Jiang Ning glanced at Doudou. At her age, it wasn’t just restless men— even women couldn’t help but be mesmerized by her.
Moreover, with her background and wealth, who wouldn’t be tempted?
Not to mention her, even if she and Huo Yishen were to break up one day, it was likely that men eager to win her favor would almost break down the door.
That was just reality.
Jiang Ning felt a headache coming on. After thinking for a moment, she finally spoke. “Doudou, what do you think of Rong Sanshao?”
“He’s pretty good.”
She cautiously asked, “What makes him good?”
Doudou paused. “Well… because of you and my brother, of course.”
“Then you…” Jiang Ning felt a bit awkward. “Has he said anything inappropriate or maybe done anything?”
Doudou looked even more confused. “No, why?”
Jiang Ning opened her mouth but then stopped. “Nothing, it’s just that he talks nonsense all the time. There’s never a reliable moment with him.”
She suddenly found it hard to ask further.
When Huo Yishen came back, it was already completely dark.
The task report was finished, and Yu Changzheng would send someone tomorrow to count the supplies before handing them over.
Jiang Ning was curious. “We brought back so many Fire Seed Containers. Did Yu Changzheng ask about the details of the process?”
“No,” he replied.
If he didn’t ask, it must have been that Gu Tinging had already given a heads-up.
There were no downsides to this matter, whether from a public or private perspective. Delving too deep would only cause unnecessary trouble.
Someone in Yu Changzheng’s position wouldn’t do something so foolish. They both understood the unspoken agreement between them.
Jiang Ning agreed with this. If he couldn’t even understand this, Gu Tinging wouldn’t have let him take on such a role.
It was getting late, so the three of them went next door to have dinner, not forgetting to bring Bai Xue and Coke along.
To their surprise, Gu Tinglin was actually the one cooking, while Shu Xueqing helped on the side.
After two months of getting along, Doudou had grown familiar with her. “Aunt Xue, the tomatoes on the farm will be ready for picking next month. We can make tomato egg soup then!”
Shu Xueqing smiled. “That sounds great.”
The wolf-hearted dog came over, wagging its tail wildly, acting all affectionate—practically one step away from calling her “grandma” just to beg for food.
Jiang Ning could hardly bear to watch.
Gu Tinglin prepared a simple meal, serving three dishes and one soup: tofu sticks with meatball soup, stir-fried cured meat with vegetables, fried ham with eggs, and a plate of greens.
Jiang Ning helped set the table.
The family sat down together for the meal.
Gu Tinglin smiled at his daughter and son-in-law. “Go on, give it a try!”
Shu Xueqing chimed in. “Anning, this is the first time your father has cooked seriously. See how his cooking is?”
Jiang Ning felt a warm feeling in her heart, but as the hot soup entered her mouth, her expression quickly became more complicated.
“Hmm, not bad.” She said to Huo Yishen, “You should try it.”
Huo Yishen picked up a piece of fried egg, noticing it was a bit burnt, but still put it into his mouth. “…”
It was… so salty!
Gu Tinging, completely unaware, felt an immense pride when both his daughter and son-in-law praised his cooking. The feeling of accomplishment was almost on par with his career achievements.
However, when he tried it himself, he immediately questioned his life choices.
In the end, the most honest reaction came from Coke: it spat out the egg in an instant and backed away, furiously rubbing its nose.
Shu Xueqing, who had only tasted it a couple of times, quickly stepped in to smooth things over. “Anning, it’s your father’s first time cooking for you. He was nervous and accidentally added too much salt.”
Maybe this was what they meant by love making you blind.
Shu Xueqing had reminded him a few times that the food was too salty, but her tone was probably light, with more encouragement than criticism, so in the end, she ate it all to spare him any embarrassment.
This gave Gu Tinglin the wrong impression. Plus, he was a little nervous and ended up making a mess in the kitchen.
Seeing the awkward expressions on their faces, Jiang Ning couldn’t help but laugh. “It’s okay, it’s just a bit salty. Tomorrow I’ll cook for you.”
In the end, they still finished the meal.
When they got home, they drank two large cups of water.
They chatted about random things, and by the time they finished showering, it was already late.
After closing the bedroom door, Huo Yishen suddenly scooped up Jiang Ning, who was in her pajamas. His voice held a hint of urgency. “Did you miss me?”
He wasn’t the type to be overly affectionate or use sweet words to coax someone.
But acting this flirtatious late at night, it was clear what was on his mind.
Jiang Ning teased him, “No, we’re together every day. I’m already tired of seeing you.”
They worked together on missions and spent all their time with the team. It had been over a month since they had any private moments.
There was no choice—there were twelve single people on the team, and every time Huo Yishen made any move, it caused a scene. Jiang Ning didn’t want to invite any resentment.
The two were close, and Huo Yishen suddenly bit her earlobe. “Really don’t miss me?”
Jiang Ning was ticklish and punched him lightly. “Stop messing around. Doudou is growing up.”
All three of them had sharp hearing, especially that sneaky wolf-hearted dog.
One time, they got too loud, and the dog started scratching at the door, leaving them in a really awkward situation.
Entangled in each other, it was impossible not to react.
Huo Yishen struggled to control himself. “Go to the space?”
They hadn’t used the space much, and there was still time, so Jiang Ning agreed.
In the end, she couldn’t even tell if it was a tsunami or a thunderstorm—it felt like she was about to be swallowed whole.
By the time they came out, she was completely drained, but somehow, she still couldn’t fall asleep.
Lying there, Jiang Ning started talking about Rong Sanshao. “I just feel like he’s up to something.”
It wasn’t that Huo Yishen was blindly confident, but Doudou could handle herself well. She could easily deal with second-generation rich kids—did she really need Huo Yishen to protect her?
The real issue was their age difference.
How should he put it? Rong Sanshao was a complicated person.
He was born lucky, living a life of luxury in his early years, but then fell from grace after a natural disaster.
But the guy was incredibly resilient, able to adapt to any situation, and behind his sweet talk, he hid ambition.
In a world full of disasters, those weren’t necessarily bad traits.
Still, as Doudou’s older brother, no matter if Rong Sanshao was sincere or not, Huo Yishen just wanted her to have a pure and simple love.
The two were not a good match.
She wasn’t even an adult yet. He didn’t want her getting tricked.
“Don’t worry, I’ll talk to Doudou tomorrow.”
Whether it was Rong Sanshao or others with bad intentions, he wanted Doudou to open her eyes and wait until she was older to make any decisions.
It would be best if this could all happen after the natural disaster ended.
After an intense and lingering moment, Huo Yishen gently kissed Jiang Ning’s forehead. “Sleep, I’ll find a chance to talk to Doudou.”
At her age, feelings were just starting to blossom, but the world was too chaotic. It was way too easy to be deceived.
The next day, while Jiang Ning was still fast asleep, Huo Yishen had already woken up early.
Doudou finished her morning exercise in the front yard, then went to the backyard to feed the poultry. He went over to help.
“Doudou, you’re not young anymore. Do you have someone you like?”
At first, Doudou was stunned, then her face turned red. “No, I don’t like men.”
Huo Yishen was stunned. What kind of reaction was that?
It felt like she was angry and desperate to distance herself from something—was there really something going on?
Instantly, he had the sudden urge to kill Rong Sanshao.
That bastard.
