Chapter 579: The Most Dangerous Place is the Safest Place
Chapter 579: The Most Dangerous Place is the Safest Place
When they found out that the oil was still split 50/50, the team was blown away. This wasn’t just an overnight fortune; it felt like an ongoing explosion of wealth.
But they were all pretty level-headed about it. Since none of them had cars, they decided to trade everything for points and let the rare resources go to Fengcheng.
Just the shares for Huo Yishen and Jiang Ning amounted to over 9,000 cubic meters, and many were watching to see how the two would handle it.
Huo Yishen wanted to rise higher, so he knew he had to keep his game up. It made the most sense for him to trade his share for points.
As for Jiang Ning, since she had a car, she decided to keep half of her share for herself and let the rest go.
The heavy snow finally stopped after falling for days, but the temperature didn’t rise with it.
Jiang Ning went to the base service center to sign a contract, giving up 20% of her shares in the farm and livestock business. In return, the farm got an extra 100 acres to plant mulberry trees, honeysuckle, and other drought- and cold-resistant plants, as well as herbs and wild grasses.
She also got tax incentives.
As long as the conditions were right, the farm would only keep growing.
The farm hired a bunch of laborers, who cleared the snow and started planting mulberry trees and honeysuckle.
Once the weather warmed up and the snow melted, the dry, sandy soil would soak up moisture, allowing them to plant trees that could protect against sandstorms and other crops as well.
The farm provided meals, and despite the workers wearing thin clothing, they still smiled.
Once they earned enough points, they’d go and make themselves some clothes.
The livestock farm brought good news: the first batch of hens had started laying eggs.
Fresh, fertilized eggs!
The survivors at the base were even happier than Jiang Ning. Chickens lay eggs, eggs become chickens – one day, they too would have eggs and chicken to eat.
Suddenly, it felt like there was hope for the future again.
Rong Tingting not only managed the livestock farm diligently, but also had the workers pick up feathers from fallen chickens, ducks, and geese, which could be used for making down jackets.
Also, with Chief Ling’s help, the poultry theft case was solved.
It turned out the thieves were a group of survivors temporarily staying in the city.
Somehow, news about the livestock farm got out, and these people managed to sneak in and steal from it during the snowstorm.
Ironically, the most dangerous place turned out to be the safest place.
They didn’t rush to escape. Instead, they hid in the base, thinking they could leave once the situation settled down.
For several days, the city was calm, and the police just went through the motions, doing the bare minimum. Once they saw the investigation wasn’t serious, they thought it was safe to leave.
Little did they know, they were caught right at the city gates and taken back to the police station.
They had eaten a few chickens, and the rest were drugged and stuffed into bags.
No more words needed; they were sent to work in the coal mines.
Xiao Wei died, and Gu Tinglin’s injury hadn’t healed, but he still took his daughter to pay respects.
The conditions at the base weren’t great. Most people were buried in a hole with no grass mat or anything, but Commander Xiao insisted on holding a proper funeral.
Losing his son had taken a toll on him and his wife, who looked much older, and Commander Xiao even had a few strands of white hair.
When Jiang Ning entered, he straightened himself and apologized, “Niece, my wife was very worried about Xiao Wei’s condition the other day and, in her panic, said some offensive things. I sincerely apologize here.”
“You’re too kind, Uncle Xiao,” Jiang Ning quickly stopped him, looking guilty. “I grew up in an orphanage, and I’ve been surviving through disasters for over ten years. I tend to get hot-headed, so I was also wrong that day…”
They exchanged words, and Commander Xiao had his wife come to apologize as well.
The truth about what happened that day had already spread.
Though Madam Xiao had made a mistake, Jiang Ning’s impulsive actions had been a bit over the top.
But today, it seemed like both sides had made amends, and the chief’s daughter didn’t seem to be as impulsive as people had thought. She knew how to hold back.
Also, it was thanks to her that Commander Yu made it out of a life-threatening situation—she was the one who quickly handed him the life-saving medicine.
So, as long as you don’t offend her, if you ever fall sick, there might be some hope.
Once the old high-ranking officials figured this out, they looked at Jiang Ning a little differently.
Commander Xiao was furious inside, but since Chief Gu was his former superior, he didn’t dare show it.
He even asked to speak to Gu Tinglin privately, subtly suggesting that he wanted to bury his son in the Heroes’ Cemetery.
Jiang Ning nearly burst out laughing. Didn’t he know how Xiao Wei had died?
It really takes a thick skin to survive in this world.
Gu Tinglin nodded. “No problem. After Xiao Wei’s funeral, you can report to the funeral committee. They’ll handle it.”
Commander Xiao was left speechless.
The funeral committee would investigate everything, and when Xiao Wei’s matters come up… there’s no way to hide it.
But he couldn’t say that outright, so he had to swallow his anger and hold it together.
“My condolences,” he said.
Gu Tinglin wasn’t feeling well, so after showing up briefly, he left with Jiang Ning.
Commander Xiao held it together, despite his frustration, and continued to handle the funeral arrangements.
After leaving Commander Xiao’s house, Gu Tinglin didn’t plan to go home. He turned to Jiang Ning. “How about we stop by the desalination plant?”
With his temperature-regulated suit on, he probably wouldn’t feel the cold. Jiang Ning drove slowly toward the destination.
In less than half an hour, they arrived.
Gu Tinglin stood on the snowy hillside, looking at the construction site of the new desalination plant, and sighed. “Anning, since you’ve been here, this land has been changing every day.”
Jiang Ning looked at the bustling scene and asked, “Are you happy about it?”
“Of course,” Gu Tinglin said, suddenly feeling very nostalgic. “I just don’t know how much longer I’ll have. I want to see this land thriving again.”
He imagined her and Huo Yishen being happily married, with children and grandchildren, and living a lifetime of happiness.
Having missed thirty years, he always felt like he wanted to make up for something but realized she had given him even more.
Jiang Ning didn’t know what was really on his mind and assumed his mood was just low because of Xiao Wei’s death.
At his age, he wasn’t exactly old, but in this world, not many survived.
Who wouldn’t fear death, especially when there’s something to look forward to?
Jiang Ning suddenly felt uneasy. “You won’t need much time. You’ll definitely see it.”
The cold wind outside cut through the air. Jiang Ning took out a cap to cover his head.
This was the first time the father and daughter were out together like this, and Gu Tinglin didn’t want to go back just yet. He walked slowly through the snow.
Jiang Ning pulled out a steaming hot sweet potato for him.
Gu Tinglin carefully peeled it and shared half with her.
The two of them smiled at each other.

When they got back home, Gu Tinglin noticed that Yu Changzheng and his wife had arrived.
Shu Xueqing was resting at home and had already let them in.
She was chatting with Commander Yu’s wife in the living room while Yu Changzheng went to the study.
They had been friends for decades, with a bond that even went beyond life and death. Gu Tinglin had even watched his children grow up.
He asked with concern, “Old Yu, how’s your health?”
“I’m alright, I can move around now,” Yu Changzheng replied.
It was freezing outside, so Gu Tinglin made him some hot tea. “This is a decades-old Pu’er tea. Anning brought it for me, and I usually don’t drink it. You’re lucky today.”
Seeing how content he was with his daughter, Yu Changzheng sighed with envy, “You’re really lucky.”
Gu Tinglin comforted him, “Don’t worry too much. Xiao Yin’s just missing. She might be living well somewhere.”
