The Beginning of Natural Disaster, I Won by Hoarding Tens of Billions of Supplies

Chapter 586: Senior Military Officials from Huacheng Arrive

Chapter 586: Senior Military Officials from Huacheng Arrive

Jiang Ning hadn’t discovered anything like this in the entire year since she arrived.

Was the base under attack?

Who would dare do that? Was it the Americans, the Russians, or some unknown United Base?

They waited at the dock for twenty minutes, but the team that had gone out still hadn’t returned, so it seemed like the situation wouldn’t be resolved anytime soon.

Huo Yishen drove home. “We’ll talk once there’s news.”

Back in Fengcheng, the military headquarters was unusually quiet, just like any other day.

Huo Yishen went to report in, while Jiang Ning headed home.

Life at sea had been tiring, with poor conditions for eating, sleeping, and resting. By the time she got home, the four pups were gone. They’d probably been sent to military training after being weaned.

The ruthless dogs weren’t around either. They were most likely at the farm, where there was plenty of space for the couple to enjoy themselves.

Jiang Ning had a meal, took a shower, and then crawled into bed to rest.

By the time she woke up, it was almost dark. The house was silent, and so was the one next door.

It made Jiang Ning seem a bit lazy in comparison.

One trip out to sea and Gu Tinglin was already working himself to death again?

Just as she was about to leave, Rong Sanshao arrived.

It had been a while since they’d last seen each other, and this guy had changed again. He was in full military uniform, looking neat and sharp, with a smile on his face that made him seem approachable.

He really was… the ever-changing Young Master Rong.

At the farm, he wasn’t afraid of shoveling manure, at the docks, he was drenched in sweat, and here at the military base, he looked all clean and refined.

He was dedicated—he loved whatever job he was doing.

Jiang Ning frowned. “What are you doing here?”

“You’re asking me that?” Rong Sanshao pouted. “I’m on duty at the military base now, so I’m here to pass on some information.”

Jiang Ning decided to tease him, “Are you serving two masters now?”

But Rong Sanshao didn’t like that. “My heart always belongs to you, Sister, and it will never change.”

Never change? Jiang Ning almost blurted out, ‘Don’t love me. It won’t end well.’

She knew he was just joking around, so she got back to the point. “What position do you hold in the military?”

This guy was fearless, and he was really moving up in the world.

Rong Sanshao didn’t mind admitting it. “Secretary.”

Jiang Ning instinctively asked, “My father?”

“I wish, but that’s still a long way off,” he said confidently.

Don’t underestimate military secretaries—many high-ranking officials started from that position.

After years of working in it, they get good at reading people, understanding their superior’s thoughts, and keeping their ears to the ground. In the end, many build careers of their own.

Jiang Ning saw potential in him.

As a military secretary, especially not being Gu Tinglin’s, showing up here was a sensitive move. But he still came.

This wasn’t just about getting a free meal.

Jiang Ning grew serious. “What’s really going on?”

Rong Sanshao looked around, lowered his voice, and said, “Senior military officials from Huacheng have arrived.”

The military staff?

They’d never come before, but they chose to show up now, two years after the establishment of the Fengcheng Base.

If they truly cared about talent, they should have arrived as soon as the aircraft carrier carrying evacuees returned to Huacheng. That’s when Gu Tinglin’s personal letter had been delivered.

Jiang Ning couldn’t figure out their intentions.

Rong Sanshao couldn’t figure them out either, but when Jiang Ning had left, she’d left behind a cruise ship, and since then, the high-ranking officials at the base had kept things calm.

At least on the surface, everything seemed peaceful.

Now, so many people were showing up—had they caught wind of something?

Regardless, Jiang Ning didn’t want to make an appearance before they figured out their true intentions.

That’s why Rong Sanshao had sneaked away to warn her.

But their arrival had been sudden. The transportation ships at the dock were still piled with fire seed containers, and they hadn’t had time to move them.

Jiang Ning understood. She was supposed to stay home and keep a low profile.

To be honest, her feelings about the Huacheng Base were complicated. It was a base built with the strength of the entire country, a place she had once thought of settling in, but had fled in the end for various reasons.

No one was a fool. If the senior officials from Huacheng really wanted to investigate, they’d probably figure things out pretty quickly.

They had traveled a long way—could Gu Tinglin hold them off?

Jiang Ning returned to the room, feeling a bit down.

It was completely dark outside, and the sounds of distant howling wolves and barking dogs filled the air. Then, the door creaked open, and Doudou walked in.

She wasn’t surprised to see Jiang Ning there, but her expression was a bit complicated. “Is brother still not back?”

Jiang Ning noticed her worried expression and asked, “Doudou, is something bothering you?”

Doudou hesitated for a moment before sitting down beside her. “I just got back from the farm. Bai Xue was insisting on going to see the pups, so I took her and Coke to the military base…”

She hadn’t expected to run into Jiang Guanshan.

Jiang Guanshan recognized her right away.

Jiang Ning frowned slightly. “And then?”

Then… someone called her name out precisely.

It was a young soldier standing next to him.

Doudou thought for a long time but couldn’t place who it was.

“Doudou, it’s me, Qin Mu.”

Doudou looked at the young soldier in front of her, who had a warm smile, but she couldn’t connect him to the Qin Mu in her memory.

In her memory, he was gentle and refined, with pale skin and a delicate figure, a frail young man.

But the young soldier in front of her was tall and well-built, with wheat-colored skin, and his smile revealed very white teeth.

The long-forgotten memories began to resurface, and his smile did seem familiar.

It had been years since they last met, and they had both changed. But Qin Mu still recognized her instantly.

Qin Mu was at the Huacheng Base? Jiang Ning pondered.

She thought for a moment before asking, “How did the two of you talk?”

“We didn’t really talk, just exchanged greetings,” Doudou replied, looking worried. “Sister-in-law, why have the people from the Huacheng Base come here?”

She felt uneasy, especially since her sister-in-law had her secrets, and it didn’t seem like the right time for them to show up.

And it was such a coincidence that she ran into Jiang Guanshan.

Before they figured out what they wanted, Jiang Ning reassured her, “Since they’re here, we’ll just go along with it.”

“Qin Mu is in Huacheng, then what about his father, Qin Chuan?”

“I didn’t ask.” The situation had taken her by surprise, and Doudou was so nervous that her mind went blank. She instinctively wanted to leave.

After a few quick pleasantries, she hurried home.

Doudou had already come to see Fengcheng as her new home, and the changes at the base, full of her hard work and effort, had made her not want to wander anymore.

She didn’t want to go through what happened in Huacheng again.

Jiang Ning pulled her close. “Don’t worry so much. Your brother and I are here.”

The arrival of people from Huacheng had even caught Gu Tinglin by surprise.

They had a gathering to welcome and catch up, and the meeting ended quite late.

And as luck would have it, Huo Yishen was spotted.

Yu Changzheng tried to cover for him, but unfortunately, Commander Xiao couldn’t keep quiet. “This is Chief Gu’s brilliant son-in-law.”

With the ocean search operations uninterrupted by storms, the resources being salvaged were valuable. Huo Yishen’s military rank shot up like a rocket.

He had earned it through evaluations, but rising so fast made him a target of envy. Even if everything was legitimate, people couldn’t help but speculate and create conspiracy theories.

But no one could deny that Gu Tinglin knew how to promote talent, even if it was family.

As for those who were envious, they could only swallow their frustrations.

And so, Commander Xiao, who had the chance, spoke too soon.

In that moment, the atmosphere turned a bit awkward.

Jiang Guanshan smiled. “Huo Yishen, it’s true what they say: gold will shine wherever it goes. Congratulations.”

The military officer raised an eyebrow. “Old Gu, I remember you were never married, so when did you get such a brilliant son-in-law?”

Back in the day, his little cousin had been quite fond of him.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t meant to be.

Gu Tinglin laughed heartily. “It’s a long story. Next time, come over to my place for dinner, and we’ll talk.”

And so, as the son-in-law of the base commander, Huo Yishen stayed in the reception group.
