Chapter 588: Moth Infestation
Chapter 588: Moth Infestation
The colorful moths were large, with wings that spread nearly half the size of a palm.
As they flapped their wings, the powdery scales on their bodies fluttered off and spread through the air.
The worst part? These moths weren’t afraid of people at all. Quite a few of them even flew straight toward Jiang Ning and the two troublemakers.
These two were fearless, yet at this moment, they both backed away, their barks sounding more like empty threats.
Jiang Ning quickly slammed the door shut. Hearing the commotion, the brother and sister rushed out of their rooms.
She hurried into her space to check on the two furballs.
Their eyes were red and puffy, and they were sneezing and tearing up nonstop.
Not good. The powder on the moths was toxic.
This was truly strange. Most moth powder isn’t toxic. Its main function is to keep moisture and reflect light.
Some people might be allergic, but the symptoms are usually very mild.
However, it was different for Coke and Bai Xue. Their eyes were bloodshot, and the allergic reaction was happening fast.
Seeing how brightly colored the moths were, Jiang Ning had a bad feeling.
Normally, it would be fine, but in a time of natural disasters or the apocalypse, anything could happen.
She quickly began rinsing their paws and eyes, but before she could even get started, she began coughing and her eyes started itching like crazy too.
Jiang Ning quickly flushed her eyes with saline, used eye drops, and took some antihistamines.
Right after that, Huo Yishen and Doudou started showing symptoms too.
Fortunately, both of them had medical knowledge and immediately took care of themselves.
Worried about Gu Tinglin and Shu Xueqing next door, Jiang Ning treated everyone’s allergic reactions first, then put on protective clothing, an eye mask, an N95 mask, and a face shield.
She quickly went next door, where moths were also flying everywhere.
Jiang Ning had been woken up by the noise from the dogs, but Gu Tinglin and Shu Xueqing were already up out of habit.
They had also noticed the swarms of moths and were trying to drive them out, but the more they swatted, the more kept coming…
Jiang Ning pulled out a can of bug spray and sprayed nonstop.
By the time she emptied the whole can and the place reeked of chemicals, the moths were finally driven off.
The air was full of fluttering wings, making everyone feel uneasy.
Shu Xueqing’s face turned pale. “Where did all these moths come from all of a sudden?”
Jiang Ning quickly pulled them inside, shut all the windows and doors, and turned on an air purifier. “The powder from the moths is toxic—it can irritate your lungs and eyes, and trigger allergies.”
She handed them saline, eye drops, and anti-inflammatory medicine.
As a head nurse, Shu Xueqing knew exactly what to do.
Jiang Ning also added, “Change into clean clothes, start allergy treatment right away, and make sure your drinking water is safe.”
She left them some protective gear and masks, reminding them to stay indoors for now.
This moth infestation was likely going to be a serious problem.
No one knew when the moths had appeared, but the invisible powder in the air was already making people uncomfortable.
Coughing, shortness of breath, itchy red skin, burning eyes—it hit fast.
Gu Tinglin had previously suffered from pneumonia and still had lung issues, so Jiang Ning brought over two canisters of compressed oxygen.
After disinfecting and purifying their own house, Huo Yishen came over to help next door.
Doudou, worried about the poultry in their farm, suited up and drove out to check on them.
As soon as Gu Tinglin’s breathing improved a bit, he grabbed the radio and began giving orders remotely. The base quickly went into emergency mode, alerting everyone to stay safe.
Departments across the base kicked into gear, and soon the loudspeakers began broadcasting a warning: Moth infestation incoming. All survivors, please be alert.
Even the hospital was affected, but they handled it fast, stayed calm, and figured out a way to deal with it pretty quickly.
The broadcast informed survivors to shut their windows and doors, stay inside, and if they started showing symptoms, to rinse their eyes with clean water.
If the body cannot bear it, seek medical attention immediately, but make sure to take protective measures when going out.
The hospital issued a strict order: all medical staff must report to work immediately.
Shu Xueqing’s allergic reaction hadn’t subsided yet. Her eyes were bloodshot and sore, and itchy red rashes had broken out all over her exposed skin.
Thankfully, they caught it in time, so it was still bearable.
She looked worried. “Old Gu, how are you holding up?”
Gu Tinglin wasn’t feeling great either, but he was already getting better. “I’m fine. Just be careful and protect yourself when you go back to the hospital.”
“Okay. But if you start feeling worse, get to the hospital right away. Don’t keep pushing through it in silence.”
Worried she might not be able to hold on, Jiang Ning gave her an anti-allergy injection.
After a night of the moth disaster, the entire base was in chaos.
The toxic powder from the moths had gotten into people’s eyes and airways, causing coughing, wheezing, tight chests, vomiting—and in severe cases, even bleeding from the eyes.
It wasn’t until stepping outside that people realized the streets had turned into a living nightmare.
Many people covered their mouths and noses on their way to the hospital, but they collapsed halfway, struggling. They gasped for air, their vision blurred, unable to see anything, and their mouths kept crying out in pain.
“Help… somebody help…”
The cries rang out nonstop. People, nearly blind, clawed at the air, grabbing at anyone nearby and refusing to let go.
Some took advantage of the chaos—those bold enough covered their faces and looted. Some broke into homes, others robbed poisoned victims of their belongings.
The military and police responded urgently, wearing gas masks to maintain order.
Some helped rush patients to the hospital, others arrested looters—but halfway through, even the officers started collapsing and had to be taken in for treatment.
In no time, the hospitals were overwhelmed.
Jiang Ning didn’t get a break. She carried the little rascal next door. “Stay here with Grandpa. Don’t wander off. If something happens, come find me at the farm.”
Gu Tinglin couldn’t help but smile. “I’m fine. I’ve got to head to the military department soon.”
Unexpectedly, the sudden moth infestation caught the officers of the military in the chaos as well.
This group wasn’t just high-ranking military members of the Huacheng military department but also technical experts, so no accidents could happen.
He had already sent some medical staff to find them.
But sending people wasn’t the real problem—it was the medicine.
Over the past year, the hospital and farm had managed to store up a small stash of traditional herbs, but it wasn’t much.
With such a sudden, large-scale outbreak, running out of medicine was inevitable.
They’d been caught completely off guard.
“There’s no medicine at the hospital. Even if you go, it won’t help.”
Jiang Ning remembered Chief of Staff Si seemed to have a heart condition too. This was serious.
“I’ll head over anyway.” She had a gut feeling their visit was somehow connected to her.
Gu Tinglin thought for a second. “Be careful.”
So, Jiang Ning headed to the guesthouse while Huo Yishen went to the farm.
There were so many moths that the water source might’ve been contaminated. Jiang Ning brought over several large barrels of purified water stored in her space, plus saline and supplies they’d stocked up from the United Base.
There were a lot of workers at the breeding farm and the farm, so it was important to ensure their safety.
The two split up to handle things.
Jiang Ning rushed to the guesthouse and found that, sure enough, many people had been affected.
Some had diarrhea and vomiting, others were crying nonstop, and some had scratched their skin raw.
The hospital had sent over two medical staff. They used clean boiled water to rinse people’s eyes, followed by herbal steam treatments.
But there were just too many patients and not enough hands—cries of pain came from every corner.
Jiang Ning looked around but didn’t see Chief of Si or Jiang Guanshan.
After asking around, she found out that they had taken the expert team out early in the morning to look around Fengcheng Base—and still hadn’t come back.
Jiang Ning’s mind raced. If Chief of Staff Si and the others were visiting Fengcheng, where would they go first?
