Chapter 607: Take Care, Wait for Me to Come Back
Chapter 607: Take Care, Wait for Me to Come Back
Ding Qi, Zheng Weili, and the others discussed things with Jiang Ning. They decided to split up into teams to search for supplies. One team would collect tents, another would search the storage warehouse, and a third would check the fuel depot.
Jiang Ning spoke calmly. “We just came from the fuel depot. It was empty. Looks like the refined fuel had already been moved somewhere else.”
Ding Qi was surprised. Today wasn’t supposed to be a fuel transport day, and they hadn’t ordered any of the captives to move supplies.
Still, since Jiang Ning had already said so, she didn’t push it. “Alright, then we won’t waste time checking the fuel depot. But make sure we search everywhere else thoroughly. These supplies are our lifeline for the evacuation.”
The captives all followed Ding Qi’s instructions and quickly split up.
Jiang Ning exchanged a quick glance with Huo Yishen. As expected, Ding Qi was sharp.
Not long after, the teams reported back with their findings.
As expected from the Americans, the supplies at their base were pretty decent—especially since they’d just received a new shipment a couple of days ago.
Soybeans, compressed biscuits, vegetables, canned food, nuts, sealed coffee beans, and a small amount of cigarettes and alcohol. Unfortunately, they had wasted a lot during their party, otherwise, there would have been more.
They also found two old armored vehicles, a military truck, and a stash of weapons stripped from corpses.
Not just weapons—Jiang Ning’s team even took their clothes, right down to the underwear.
Ding Qi was even more ruthless. She had them take everything, including the tents.
Anything they couldn’t carry was thrown into the burning oil fields. They weren’t leaving a single hair behind for the Americans.
The survivors dumped the American soldiers’ corpses into the fire, letting the flames consume everything.
Zhang Chao and Lu Yu rushed over with their team. When they saw Huo Yishen, their eyes nearly teared up. In perfect unison, they called out, “Brother Shen!”
If it weren’t for Anning and Brother Shen showing up, there was no way they could’ve won this fight—at least not this easily.
They had stepped in when things were at their worst and saved countless lives.
Huo Yishen stayed composed. “As long as you’re all okay.”
Zhang Chao and Ding Qi hadn’t seen each other in a while. When they reunited, they hugged tightly.
In the end, the situation was more or less resolved with little danger and was considered a perfect outcome.
Then Huo Yishen spoke up. “Since you’re safe now, we need to head out and locate the Fire Seed Containers. We’ll meet up at the agreed spot later.”
“Brother Shen, Anning, thank you both for helping us. If you hadn’t shown up, who knows how many of us would’ve died before we got our freedom back,” Ding Qi said gratefully. “We actually know exactly where the Fire Seed Container are, how about we take you there? It’ll be more convenient.”
“The Fire Seed Container is too big. Even if we split it up, it’s hard to transport, and we’ll need more people.”
“There’s no need,” Huo Yishen politely declined. “We’re part of a special salvage team, and we have specific roles. We’re just the front-line team. The follow-up will be handled by more professional personnel.”
“You all should lead your people and head to the gathering point as soon as possible. We’ve got vehicles and can move faster. If we don’t coordinate properly and leave on time, things could get ugly if the American main base finds out what happened.”
The captives had been doing hard labor for a long time. Their bodies and minds were already in bad shape. There weren’t enough vehicles for everyone either, so only the elderly, weak, and injured would ride. The others had to travel non-stop on foot.
Ding Qi was smart. Zheng Weili had told her a bit about the special salvage team from Fengcheng.
Anyone who could travel the oceans and carry out missions like that had their own code and secrets. Since Huo Yishen had turned down her offer, it meant they really didn’t need the help.
They were military special forces on a classified mission. Not something just anyone could get involved in.
Ding Qi didn’t insist. “Take care. We’ll be waiting for you at the gathering point.”
After years apart, there wasn’t much time for catching up.
Both sides had important tasks to finish. Jiang Ning hugged each of the four one by one. They wished each other well, then drove off in the Hummer.
Jiang Ning waved to the group. “Take care of yourselves. I’ll be back.”
They had arrived in a hurry, and left just as quickly—like a sandstorm sweeping through the wasteland.
Ding Qi and Zheng Weili stood there in a daze. Everything felt surreal, like waking from a dream.
After the joy of reuniting, watching Jiang Ning interact with her team stirred something in Zheng Weili. The memories of their time on the 18th floor were still vivid, but those days now felt so far away.
Jiang Ning had a new team now. People she could trust to watch her back in dangerous situations.
As for herself, after all the twists and turns, she had also faced her fair share of life-and-death moments. Maybe that’s just how life goes.
Either way, there’s still hope ahead—and she would keep going, no matter what.
After Jiang Ning and her team left, Ding Qi and the others didn’t waste any time. They quickly gathered their people and began the evacuation in an orderly fashion.
At dawn, the four of them were speeding across the desert in armored vehicles.
It was the start of something new, but not entirely unfamiliar.
Fengcheng? The way Jiang Ning talked about it—there was a light in her eyes.
Was it the hometown where the three of them had grown up? The one they once fought so hard to protect?
If Anning was willing to risk her life to defend it, maybe it really was some kind of paradise.
The four of them couldn’t help but feel drawn to it.
After more than ten years of surviving one disaster after another, everyone was exhausted. They just wanted a safe harbor. A place to finally rest and live like real people again.
Two armored vehicles tore through the wasteland, kicking up huge clouds of dust behind them.
The oil field wasn’t far—barely a hundred miles from the Fire Seed Containers. But the thick black smoke rising from the burning oil could easily give them away.
They had to move fast. They couldn’t afford to give the enemy time to react.
Midway through the trip, the black German Shepherd got jolted awake and started barking like crazy.
If it hadn’t been tightly secured in the net, it really looked like it would tear them all apart.
Jiang Ning didn’t have time to deal with it. She quickly knocked it out again with ether.
Everyone laughed. That’s Sister Ning for you—always decisive.
They sped on through the night and reached the area just as the sky began to lighten.
Huang Mao pulled out his binoculars and scanned the distance. He spotted the Fire Seed Container standing tall in the open.
The Americans were still there. They’d set up tents in a sheltered spot and seemed to be resting. Nearby were various tools and equipment for opening the containers.
It was too far, and still too dark, to tell exactly what they were using.
Jiang Ning stored away the armored vehicles. The group moved quietly toward the container.
Just when they were about to arrive, something unexpected happened.
The night watchman, who had dozed off, suddenly woke up—because he needed to pee.
He rushed off a little way to relieve himself, looked around, and was just about to head back to sleep when something flickered at the edge of his vision.
He quickly ducked into the shadows and grabbed his binoculars to take a closer look.
But the place looked foggy and empty—like nothing was there. Maybe his eyes were playing tricks on him?
He gave his head a shake and went back to his post.
But halfway into his nap, he suddenly sat up and did a double-take.
“Oh my god!”
There were enemies. For real this time!
He blew his whistle as hard as he could.
Jiang Ning’s team had been careful, but they hadn’t counted on running into a guy like that.
The shrill whistle pierced through the silence.
Huang Mao thought about trying the same trick again, but the Americans immediately grabbed their weapons and opened fire.
Bullets flew like they were free.
Thankfully, Jiang Ning’s group was battle-hardened and quickly found cover to protect themselves.
With their military background, there was no doubt about their shooting skills.
At several hundred meters away, the Americans’ submachine guns couldn’t even reach them.
Jiang Ning and Huo Yishen pulled out their sniper rifles.
Huang Mao and the others had come prepared too. They had their rifles strapped to their backs from the start.
Everyone got into position, quietly waiting for the perfect moment to shoot.
