Chapter 615: Slapping Himself Several Times in a Row
Chapter 615: Slapping Himself Several Times in a Row
Bai Xue got scolded for no reason and was really upset. If her wealthy and powerful mother-in-law hadn’t been there, she probably would’ve torn her husband’s heart out.
The four pups were stuck in the middle, but deep down, they still leaned toward Bai Xue—after all, they grew up drinking her milk.
Bai Xue stormed home.
The trainer brought over some medicine to treat the German Shepherd’s wounds—it was bleeding all over.
The dog looked like it had lost the will to live. Why was it always the one getting hurt?
Jiang Ning felt guilty and pulled out a box of freeze-dried treats from her bag as an apology.
The dog perked up the moment it caught the familiar scent. Its eyes lit up, and it immediately felt more energetic.
After leaving the training ground, Jiang Ning found a quiet spot to sit down.
She pulled the dog close and quietly studied it.
Ever since she came to Fengcheng, most of her time was spent out at sea. Sure, she’d go home to cuddle the dog sometimes, but honestly, she hadn’t been paying as much attention as before.
She’d gone from a teenage girl to a woman in her thirties. No matter how well she took care of herself, time still left its marks.
Dogs have even shorter lifespans.
She carefully checked the dog’s fur, bones, and body.
It had mutated before, and from a glance it still looked like it was in its prime—but in reality, it was getting old. The fur around its brow was already starting to change color.
A sudden wave of sadness hit her, and she hugged the dog tightly.
The dog whimpered, like it was complaining she hadn’t been around enough.
She was rarely home these days, and Doudou was always busy too.
Apologetically, she fed it three meat sticks before it finally calmed down.
She stroked its head. “New Year’s is coming—I’ll make it up to you, okay?”
The dog may be getting old, but it was still sharp. It had easily taken down the German Shepherd, and the wounds weren’t too serious.
“You’re getting jealous over nothing. The black German Shepherd is your future son-in-law. If you wanna be a grandpa, you’ll have to count on him.”
Jiang Ning comforted it while gently trying to reason with it. “Bai Xue’s a wolf—wolves are super loyal to their partners. She’s not messing around with anyone else. You really misunderstood.”
She’s just getting more fond of him, like a mother-in-law getting fonder of her son-in-law.
Unlike you, just out there having fun. Bai Xue’s the one who’s actually thinking about the kids, hoping to have grandpups sooner rather than later…”
The dog looked totally lost—it clearly didn’t understand a word she said.
Jiang Ning sprinkled some pain relief powder on its wound, then took it to the guesthouse.
The guesthouse was quite large, with rows of tents neatly arranged.
Just as Jiang Ning was about to ask around, the dog’s ears perked up. It tilted its head, then suddenly bolted toward the sound. “Woof!”
Lu Yu looked surprised. “Coke?”
The person hadn’t recognized them, but the dog had recognized the voice.
In the past two or three days since coming to the base, the four hadn’t been idle and had almost finished touring Fengcheng.
Now, they were about to head out and coincidentally ran into Jiang Ning.
After some rest and recovery, the four were still a bit thin, but looked much better. They had even changed into decent clothes.
Rong Sanshao had thought of everything—they didn’t even need to ask for help, the supplies they needed were already delivered.
After years apart, the changes in Second Generation were shocking. Compared to when they lived in the New City villa district, it was as if he were a completely different person — if one didn’t know, they might think he had been replaced.
Reuniting with Jiang Ning felt like a huge surprise, but they didn’t expect their old superior to be in Fengcheng as well.
They ran into Director Ling at the exchange center yesterday afternoon. He was so happy to see them, he insisted on buying them lunch.
They ended up chatting for a long time, reminiscing all the way from the old Fengcheng to the new one. Then he smiled and asked, “So, what are your plans from here on out?”
Everyone has hopes for the future, but the four of them were still registered soldiers—and part of the Fire Seed Plan.
Back then, they’d fought tooth and nail to get into the military base just to survive the apocalypse.
But once they truly became soldiers, the responsibilities and duties they carried were a different story.
They’d thought it through before coming to Fengcheng.
As active military personnel, they didn’t have the freedom to just go wherever they wanted.
“Director Ling, we’ll follow the organization’s arrangements.”
Director Ling didn’t say much more, just smiled and said, “I’m really glad you all came. Let’s work together to build a better Fengcheng.”
There were over a thousand people in the camp. Aside from a few dozen Fire Seed Plan members and some soldiers from other bases, most were regular survivors.
Unlike the survivors who were protected by bases or the military, those who had been out there fending for themselves were used to survival of the fittest. Whether it was age, intelligence, or physical ability, they were all top of the line.
So when this group arrived in Fengcheng—despite looking like skin-and-bone—they immediately sparked a fierce competition between the city administration and the military for recruitment.
This was the era of massive rebuilding—every sector was short on people.
All city departments jumped in and held dedicated recruitment events at the guesthouse.
Not to be outdone, the military held another round of enlistment.
In just two or three days, more than half of the thousand people were snatched up, and the remaining ones weren’t worried about lacking job opportunities.
Land clearing, forest planting, brick factories, coal plants, food production… worst case, the government would assign you a plot of land.
As long as the weather held up and you were willing to work, you wouldn’t starve.
Compared to the New Continent, this place was practically heaven.
With the pressure lifted, a lot of survivors started to mentally crash—it all felt surreal, like a dream you’d have before dying.
Some, overwhelmed, even slapped themselves a few times just to make sure it was real.
One guy slapped himself so hard half his face swelled up—then started laughing and crying at the same time.
Meanwhile, those like Zheng Weili, who were still on military duty, had to wait for reassignment orders.
They weren’t too worried. Based on their accomplishments, they were sure to land decent positions—whether it’d be what they actually wanted though, was another matter.
The four of them didn’t go out much. When she came into the tent, they greeted her right away. “Anning, did you bring the Fire Seed Container back?”
Most people had already found jobs, so the tents were less crowded. The four of them got to share one.
No more sandstorms that sounded like ghosts wailing, no more constant danger from heavily armed Americans. They’d finally gotten a few nights of decent sleep, and it showed—both mentally and physically.
“I brought it back, it’s at the port waiting for the unpacking and handover.”
Thinking about the six months of guerrilla warfare, the four couldn’t help but feel emotional. After crossing thousands of miles of ocean, it was finally home.
Jiang Ning added, “The container is full of solar power units. Once installed, they’ll solve a huge part of the power shortage.”
The light in people’s homes would be powered by their sweat and sacrifice.
Zheng Weili sighed. “A few people died to protect that thing. But they’ll never get the chance to come home.”
And not just them—the other Fire Seed Plan members who gave their lives, too.
They were less fortunate, at least they waited for hope and successfully reached this new home.
“Life and death are unpredictable. For the fallen soldiers, you can report their names to the military—they’ll be honored on the Martyrs’ Memorial.”
The mood got a bit heavy, so Jiang Ning quickly switched the topic. “So, how’s everything been since you got here? Need anything?”
“Honestly? It’s way better than we ever imagined.”
In just a few days, even without asking around, the four had already figured out who Jiang Ning really was.
The chief’s own daughter, everywhere they looked, it was her achievements.
To be honest, they were still in shock. How did Jiang Ning suddenly have such a powerful father?
The difference in status was too huge. And they’d been apart for so long, it made things a bit awkward. Except for Lu Yu, who had no filter. “Anning, you’re really the Chief’s daughter?”
Zhang Chao and Lu Yu actually hadn’t known much about her background.
By the time they moved into the New City villa district, Song Yaling and her daughter had already left.
Even when they later reunited at the military base, Jiang Ning hadn’t mentioned anything about it.
They grew up together, so Jiang Ning didn’t hide it. “Yes.”
