Chapter 124
Chapter 124
The Assassination Target
Leonardo seemed like he had no intention of even hiding whether Francesca’s hypothesis was correct or not.
Hearing that, Graziano’s eyes slightly wavered.
“What is this supposed to mean, young miss. Then, the person that man is actually trying to kill is…….”
It was only natural for him to be so bewildered. Francesca began to put her thoughts and theories to words as she tried to explain.
“I can more or less understand why. In the history of the Savini family, there were constant mentions of how they used their influence and power to commit various crimes right? But not a single one of those evil deeds were enacted upon directly by the Savini family themselves.”
“To commit evil without getting found requires its own level of talent after all. The Savinis simply joined hands in the back with the perpetrators, who actually did the dirty work for them.”
Leonardo grabbed one of the bangs of his hair with his fingertips, and spoke as he tried to fix his hair. Confirming that Leonardo didn’t refute anything she had said, Francesca continued speaking.
“The perpetrators might also be the real masterminds behind this plan as well. After spending so many years committing crimes together Savini family, they now, for reason, had no need for them anymore.”
Taken aback by the revelations, Graziano turned to look back at the Savini family carriage in which he came. Seeing the flag of the family flutter in the air, he spoke, as if to himself.
“So you’re saying that the perpetrators are basically silencing the head of the Savinis by killing him…..?”
“Let me hear your thoughts, Leonardo.”
From the very start, Leonardo wasn’t really interested in stopping the assassination plot. Instead he was more focused in finding out the mastermind who seemed to be behind these incidents.
And now, there was a high possibility that the assassin and these perpetrators were in fact connected to the mastermind that Leonardo has been chasing after all this time.
Even Francesca, knowing full well how this assassination was part of the game’s scenario, fully believed that the real mastermind was connected to this all somehow.
But, that wasn’t all.
“The person aiming for the Lord Marquis is……”
“——-the criminal who joined hands with the Savini family is almost certainly the [mastermind] themselves. But right now, they are quite literally trying to cut off the Savinis for good.”
“……..”
As Graziano clenched his hands in frustration, suddenly sounds of glass crashing echoed from inside the hall.
“!!”
Francesca quickly turned to look in that direction, and then gasped at the sight in front of her.
“This is………”
Inside the pitch dark hall, an eerie silence had completely taken over the place.
Straining one’s eyes to see better, she could tell that a large amount of people had simply collapsed on the ground. The people who were all running about in a panic, had all suddenly lost their consciousness somehow.
She was about to rush in out of instinct to go help them, but she quickly stopped herself in her tracks. Indeed, a lot of people had collapsed but, inside the hall, there were at least about a dozen or so people that were still standing, albeit, they looked like lifeless dolls rather than people, feebly standing in place.
“Don’t move just yet, Francesca.”
“I know……..both the people that have collapsed, and the people that are dazed but still standing, they all seem weird.”
Because the only people that were still standing were all prostitutes of the Ranieri family.
The girls knelt to the ground and searched through the coats of the men lying on the ground, and then pulled out what seemed like matchsticks made for lighting cigarettes.
They lit those, and then began to use them to relight the candlesticks placed upon the tables in the hall.
“Are they, relighting the candles that had gone out……..?”
“………it’s begun.”
With their silky dresses swaying about, the prostitutes walked around as they slowly turned the darkness into a brightly lit area once again. It was like watching ghosts walk, and you couldn’t feel any weight in their movements, as they continued on to do their work.
In a matter of moments, the brightness returned to the hall, and it became quite to easy to see everything inside even from the garden where they stood. The girls’ faces looked hollow and empty, as if they had no life left in them.
Seeing that, Graziano frowned, unable to hide the unpleasant feeling he felt.
“Mass brainwashing………”
It was like watching a cultish ritual take place.
Whether it be the lit chandelier shining the room, the lapis lazuli coloured carpet on which the men lay unconscious, or whether it be the prettily dressed prostitutes simply standing there with matchsticks in their hands. It was a horribly eerie scene.
“All the people that have collapsed are important people from foreign countries, not to mention they are all high ranking nobles. On the other hand, the prostitutes who are being controlled, while beautiful, are all commoner, of low born descent.”
“Leonardo………”
“And while we have escaped the brainwashing, we are the same. It would seem the masterminds brainwashing ability can control multiple people at the same time, but it doesn’t work against people with exalted bloodlines.”
(The purity of blood was it. Basically as the game would put it, it was the rarity of the characters….!!)
Meaning, above a certain level of rarity, mass brainwashing won’t work on them it seems.
Ricardo’s father was brainwashed though, so it clearly could still work when done on them individually. However, in a situation like this where a large amount of people can be brainwashed at the same time, high ranking nobles are able to escape that fate.
The reason why Leonardo remained silent and simply observed was possibly to investigate and confirm that fact.
“The people who have collapsed, must have been knocked unconscious by the brainwashed prostitutes I imagine. In the chaos of the darkness, I imagine they could take out even adult men without much trouble.”
“Leonardo, now’s not the time to be leisurely analyzing things!”
“No no, now is precisely the time to calmly, and carefully observe things, though?”
His golden moon-coloured eyes narrowed as he put both his hands inside the pockets of his coat.
“It would seem, our enemy wanted to put on a show for us.——-for you who wants to stop the assassination of Lord Savini, it’s pretty much the worst kind of assassin imaginable I suppose.”
Inside the dimly lit dance hall, a single man walked up to the centre of the place.
Long and slender physique, and yet he certainly didn’t seem lanky either. Light brown hair, red eyes, it was the face of a man similar to one Francesca was quite used to seeing everyday.
“I knew it..”
The brainwashed prostitutes knelt on the ground as if praying to the man in the centre. This man was the one that was aiming for the Marquis’ life, and wished to kill him, and had been brainwashed by the mastermind as well.
“The man Marquis Savini requested to be killed was,…….The Marquis himself…..”
The man standing there was indeed the very person they were tasked to protect, Marquis Savini himself.
