Chapter 268 268: The New Order (5)
The dust settled, and the capital was on a swift road to recovery.
Those who could be saved had been rescued, and the funds that poured in from the rest of the Hyades Republic were spent in rebuilding the capital. Purging the corrupted officials that led to the rise of the Demon Cult took some time, but with Amon and Eldorin's help, they managed to drain the swamp in record time.
Slowly but surely, Zephys was on the fast road to recovery.
And a month after the Demon Cult had triggered Starfall, the funeral procession for those who perished during the tragedy was finally underway.
The Solaris House provided relief and funds, greatly boosting its image as the shield of humanity.
Which was why…
The day of the memorial for the fallen.
Almost every important person in the Hyades Republic attended this procession. The President of the Demon Hunter League, Lady Katarina Voss. The Grand Marshall of Hyades, Gerrick Ironblood. The Archmagister of the Realm, Jex Amaris. The former Lord Protector of the Realm, Kassadin Bromm.
The list went on.
Many who had lost loved ones wore solemn expressions as they marched through the square to the cemetery. Some of them couldn't hold back tears while the guards buried those who perished during Starfall. Some glared with anger at the former officials who held rank within the government.
But many of them… had their attention plastered on one unassuming group.
Standing at the very back was Eldorin, the heroes who fought tooth and nail against the Demon Cult.
Due to their rescue efforts, Leon, Ellahan and Aluria were recognised the most. They didn't look happy in the slightest, but they all put on an effort to smile at those who came up to them.
Then there were the other members. While they looked cold and distant, that resonated with the onlookers even more. Sometimes, heroes didn't have to be personable or friendly; as long as they had the strength to fight the demonic threat, they would be respected.
There were even people stealing glances at the Sword Saint and the Solaris Lord.
It was rare to see the two titans in any setting, so naturally, people couldn't help but be curious.
But the one who caught the most attention was none other than the man who surpassed them all…
Amon Solaris.
The vast majority of people witnessed his transcendental move over the skies of Zephys. Like an immortal from legend, he split a mountain-sized meteor with pure power, saving the city from definite ruin. It was a power akin to a god, and that brought equal measure of awe and fear to the people's eyes.
As for the man himself…
"Are you still sulking over losing the trace of your aunt?"
"..."
Amon was caring for a specific young woman who seemed out of sorts even as she attended the funeral procession. Yue held her cheek in her palm while holding back her sigh.
"I underestimated her again… I'd thought I knew all of her abilities… I grew arrogant."
Yue didn't manage to catch her aunt, the Apostle of Lust.
As a regressor, she'd thought she had an idea of what Isadora Elune, the woman who betrayed humanity to enact her lust, was capable of. But, in the end, Isadora managed to escape before Yue could trap her.
"But didn't you mortally injure her? Even if she escaped, there's a chance she would succumb to her wounds."
"I highly doubt that. Now that we've changed the timeline so much, it's better to expect the unexpected."
"That's true…"
Amon found himself agreeing with Yue's doom and gloom.
There were six calamities Yue had endured in her previous lifetime.
The First Calamity: The betrayal of the Sword Saint and the birth of Abomination.
The Second Calamity: The resurrection of the Ocean Divine, Thalassa.
The Third Calamity: Starfall and the destruction of the capital.
The Fourth Calamity: The Summoning of the Demon Prince.
The Fifth Calamity: The return of the Titans.
And finally, the Sixth Calamity: The Great Demon Invasion.
Each subsequent calamity would weaken the human race while giving the Demon Cult increasing power and influence.
In the end, humanity would fall, and the demon race would take over the planet, a fate that would doom humanity's future for the rest of time.
Amon and Yue had stopped the first two calamities with little to no damage.
The Sword Saint didn't betray humanity, and Abomination, the Demon King's pet, took over the Apostle of Subservience instead. Amon managed to kill Abomination before it could pose any significant threat, thereby completely negating the Demon Cult's plan to cause damage with the First Calamity.
Amon also stopped the Second Calamity, but this time, he employed Leon's help. Leon saved his parents by killing Thalassa, and in doing so, they created a new Ocean Divine, Aluria.
However, the Third Calamity was a different story.
They overlooked the existence of a new threat, the Pope of the Utopia Church, and miscalculated many things due to their overconfidence. Bane, Amon's most trusted intelligence agent, betrayed him after being influenced by Nirvana and was currently in custody seeking mental healing.
When Amon fell, it was Leon who had to shoulder the burden of Eldorin and while he did a good job… it was far too little.
The Demon Cult's plan had already advanced leaps and bounds without Amon and Yue realising it and it was too late to stop Starfall.
The best they could do was mitigate the damage.
If not for Amon unlocking his human emotions and accepting his true self, the Third Calamity would have destroyed the entire capital, and the world would have entered a new era of chaos.
Not that it wasn't chaotic already.
From here on out… Neither Amon nor Yue could use their cheat-like knowledge to predict the future. They could deduce the Demon Cult's plans from whatever intelligence they already had, but it was far from enough.
"With my aunt disappearing, I can't stop her from causing the Fourth Calamity… I'm sorry, Amon."
"Don't apologise," Amon leaned into Yue's body and held her gently by the waist. "We'll just have to find her again. Besides, if she's going to follow through with her plan as you said… perhaps she won't return to the Demon Cult."
"Y-Yeah, let's hope that's the case."
Yue felt her heart turn warm as Amon's tender action caught her in a welcome surprise.
She knew that with Amon's emotions back, he was careless with expressing his heart's desires, and the only way he knew how was by replicating her actions.
And that meant being a little clingy and generous with physical touch.
But because of that… it turned into a weird situation where Amon was embarrassed, unsure if he was doing the right thing, and Yue was overwhelmed with emotion.
An awkward silence hung over the air while the two lovebirds were cuddling in front of a crowd, who rolled their eyes at the peculiar sight.
"As expected of the Fantasy Couple… They can't read the atmosphere."
"Who flirts at a funeral?"
Murmurs cursing the couple, mainly from eternal singles, came pouring in. However, it was mostly done under their breath. After all, no one truly wished to antagonise the powerhouse that was Amon Solaris.
The two enjoyed each other's embrace for a while and before long, the funeral was about to reach its conclusion. The current leader of the Hyades Republic, Gerrick Ironblood, gave a speech thanking the heroes who saved the capital, and widely condemning the Demon Cult, swearing that they will have their revenge.
But Amon didn't listen to the speech at all.
His primary focus was on the goddess in his arms.
"Yue, what's your plan now?"
"I will track my aunt."
Yue replied with determination, fire blazing within her ruby eyes.
"She is the cause of the next calamity. If we just eliminate her, then…"
"Yeah, a Demon Prince can't be summoned into our world."
Even with Amon's current power, he didn't have confidence in eliminating a Demon Prince. One had to know that even among the monsters in the Demon Realm, a Demon royal stood out. They had the power to vaporise oceans and cause the world to quake if they chose to.
The only hope he had was that the Demon Prince would be weakened when travelling across the dimensional barrier and be hindered by the fact that the demonic mana in Hyades is nothing like the Demon Realm.
But if they could entirely prevent the Demon Prince from crossing, it would be infinitely better.
"But I was talking about the Herald. I heard you made a deal with her?"
"Ah, that… Yeah, I gave her the location of the Necropolis of the Gods."
"So… It has finally come to that, huh?"
Amon sighed and held his head. The Herald sought to revive the ancient race of Titans, and for that, she needed access to the Necropolis of the Gods.
A place that the ancient Dragon Progenitor, Yval, resided.
"We planned this, remember?"
Yue gently remarked.
"Don't worry, Sister Yval and I have been preparing for this since our first date there."
"Date? Wasn't it more of a kidnapping?"
"Heh, maybe it was."
Yue fondly reminisced about the first time she met Amon in this timeline. To the outside world, Amon and Yue fell in love at first sight, and they eloped for a loving date at the tender age of ten.
But, Amon and Yue actually teleported to the Necropolis of the Gods to make contact with the great Dragon who sacrificed her soul to seal the ancient Titans.
"Come to think of it… hasn't been a while since we last did that?"
"Did what?"
"Elope."
Yue chuckled while holding Amon's arm. Mischief crossed through her eyes as she whispered lovingly:
"Let's do it?"
