Chapter 270: Eloping Again (2)
Chapter 270: Eloping Again (2)
[Yue's POV]
It happened all so quickly.
One minute, I was investigating how to improve my summoning abilities, and the next… A strange man barged into my chambers in the middle of the night. The young man who was littered with scars stood before me with his blade pointed at my neck.
Black hair and golden eyes… Those were the traits of the Solaris House. As far as I can recall, the Elune House and Solaris House didn't have any quarrels… so why was he here threatening my life?
"I came to kill you, but it seems that you're better alive than dead."
The young man hesitated. I would later find out that it was this hesitation that spared my life, but for now, I was terrified. I tried to open my mouth to bargain, but he didn't give me the chance.
"Come with me."
And for the first time in my life…
I eloped.
❖❖❖
A few months had passed since this young man kidnapped me from the Elune House. At first, I thought he was going to do unspeakable things to me, but surprisingly, the young man was a gentleman. Or rather… he didn't lust over my body in any single way.
We journeyed from town to town as he hunted villains while I observed him from the sidelines.
The young man was strange.
He acted as if he knew everything that was going to happen and moved with determination. So far, all of the enemies he faced were demons or people related to the Demon Cult.
Yes, that Demon Cult.
I was completely fooled, thinking that my struggles were all due to the weight of expectations.
But I now knew… The Demon Cult was secretly controlling the Elune House.
My aunt, Isadora Elune, betrayed humanity and joined the Demon Cult as an Apostle. She sold out her bloodline, giving the Demon Cult a way to control the Elune House through me. If not for Amon's intervention, I would have gone down the road of a villainous puppet, unaware of who controlled my strings.
And so, I started working for him.
I started working for… Amon Solaris.
I quickly learned that Amon was fighting the Demon Cult to prevent the calamities they would inevitably cause.
When I first heard of it, I wondered how he knew all this information. But it wasn't my place to question him, not yet at least.
So we journeyed…
We first fought against the Blood Demon, a threat that no regular twenty-year-old Knight could take on.
However, despite the overwhelming odds, Amon stood alone against that monster, fighting it to the death. Although he won, it was nothing more than a pyrrhic victory, with Amon taking grievous wounds that would last for the rest of his life.
But like a madman possessed, Amon persisted.
We then met a passing runic monk who seemed to have lost everything to the Demon Cult. Amon saved him, not because it was the right thing to do, but because it gave him a lead to the enigmatic base of the Apostle of Subservience.
A necromancer who had been captured and subjected to tormentous experiments. Two brothers who were slaves to the Demon Cult. A deformed woman whose entire family was eradicated by demons.
Somehow or another, Amon would meet these people who were doomed and save them from the brink of despair.
Whenever I asked him, he would brush it off as a coincidence or that he was saving them to damage the Demon Cult.
But I could tell…
Amon was searching… looking for a purpose in his life.
And that's when I caught a glimpse of what his inner desires were… he wished to become a Hero.
A Hero named Leon Bright became prominent. And every time Amon heard his name, I could always see a slight smile creeping up his cheeks.
I would always ask what the reason behind his smile was, but Amon simply replied:
"You won't understand."
As his subordinate, I couldn't delve deeper despite my curiosity. But that thought always lingered at the back of my mind.
It wasn't until I stumbled across an ancient cave while chasing the remnants of spies within the Holy Church that I came across the truth…
The Mysterious Grimoire.
An artefact more incomprehensible than anything I'd ever laid my eyes upon. Its leather covers were bound by black chains yet, I possessed the ability to peer within its pages. At first, it was only one page, but as I continued to grow as a magician, so did my mastery over the artefact.
And it was when the fascinating truth came to me.
"You were from another world?"
"... I didn't expect you to find out."
Amon sighed and confessed his life story to me, though only in fragments. He mentioned that he was from another world and that the world we were living in was from a book he'd read.
Initially, I was utterly stunned, not sure how to react to his truth. But, thinking about it, if Amon was a transmigrator that knew everything about our world and the future… it made complete sense.
How was he able to predict the future? How could he grow so fast despite being a little older than me? And finally… his urgency in killing the Demon Cult.
Everything started to fit like a puzzle.
But the more surprising thing was… what was this Mysterious Grimoire?
How could it reveal such truths to me?
Not only was I fascinated, but I also knew that this was the key to unravelling the truth behind this world.
And thus, I began studying it like a bible, desperately hoping to unshackle its seals and read the book from cover to cover.
❖❖❖
Years passed.
Our battles with the Demon Cult only grew more desperate and deadly.
Despite our best efforts, Amon and I were only able to foil two of the four calamities he read in [Bright]. And even then, Amon was the one who took the full brunt of the damage, greatly hindering his future potential.
Amon didn't care that much. As long as he could weaken the Demon Cult, then it was a job well done.
Alas, no matter how powerful Amon was… he was just a single person.
The First Calamity, Abomination and the Second Calamity, Thalassa, were all solvable through brute force. Something that Amon was capable of. He trained tirelessly, becoming one of the most powerful Knights on the planet.
Unfortunately, the Third Calamity was something beyond the reach of a single human.
Starfall, or the Grand Spell of the Demon Cult to destroy the capital. Amon could cut down all of his enemies, no matter how powerful they were, but he was just one person. He could stop thousands of meteors falling from the sky, and he couldn't save everyone who was subjected to its wrath.
Worse still, Amon was bogged down by bureaucracy and corrupt officials who sold humanity to the Demon Cult.
In the end, we were unable to stop the Third Calamity, and the Hyades Republic was fractured.
But that was just the beginning of our nightmares.
The Solaris House, which should have stood as the last defender of humanity, fell to the Fourth Calamity.
Isadora Elune, the Apostle of Lust, was unable to hold back her desires anymore. She betrayed the Demon Cult and summoned the Demon Prince into our world.
I'd never seen a being that powerful in my life.
Behaving like the descended outer god it was, it reaped death and destruction with every step it took.
Flames that could wipe out the oceans were seared in my memories, and the Solaris House, the mighty bulwark that had protected humanity since the beginning, perished entirely.
We were able to repel it back to the Demon Realm, but the cost we paid was too severe.
With the Solaris House gone, the Demon Cult gained power and influence like never before. Humans betrayed us by the millions, and in no time at all, the Demon Cult had its influence spread to all four corners of the world.
And when we reached what we thought was rock bottom, an unexpected helping hand came.
The Herald, the woman who had helped us throughout our journey and acted as the intelligence agent for Amon, sought the Necropolis of the Gods.
She claimed that with its sealed power, we could finally fight the Demon Cult on equal grounds.
But that was all just a ruse.
The Herald… was plotting to resurrect the Titans… and she successfully did so with our help.
If not for Sister Yval helping us… Humanity would have been wiped clean there. Our focus shifted away from the Demon Cult and onto the awakened Titans. They were embodiments of nature, unkillable until we ripped their divinity cleanly away from them.
It took us over two years to finally stop the Titans, but by then… the damage was done.
In our distraction, the Demon Cult slowly gained power and started their final plan… the Grand Scheme that came to fruition.
The Sixth Calamity: The Great Demon Invasion.
That was the true end of the Hyades Republic and humanity as we knew it.
Most of humanity perished in the initial blitz, leaving less than one per cent of the population remaining. Those who were lucky were granted a quick, painless death. But for the majority… a lifetime of suffering awaited them.
Taken as livestock and slaves, they were unable to decide their own fate. Forced to witness acts of cruelty by their new overlords, humanity lost the mandate of heaven and were reduced to mere ants living in the new order.
We managed to gather what few survivors we could and create a community, one hidden from the Demons.
And through it all, Amon the Great stood tall, being the first and last defender of humanity.
Even after the destruction of the Solaris House, the death of the Hero, and all of humanity falling… Amon never once gave up.
Against the Apostles, against the Titans, against the Demons… He stood alone.
And I… fell in love with that man.
