Chapter 429: Chapter 430 : Facing your own fears (2)
Meanwhile.
Kaelith rushed forward into the fog, her figure quickly disappearing into the white mist as she tried to catch up with Alex. She knew one thing clearly—’If I stay near him… I’ll be safe.’
Behind her, the others followed.
James and his companions moved quickly, trying not to lose sight of her silhouette in the fog.
Seeing this, Camilla immediately raised her voice, “Everyone, stay close and remain alert at all times! Do not break formation!”
The members of the Scorpion Clan tightened their positions instantly.
Remus suddenly stepped forward and said, “I’m going after Miss Kaelith. It’s too dangerous for her to be alone in a place like this.”
Before he could move—
SMACK.
Camilla hit him hard on the back of his head.
“Do I need to remind you that you have a unit to lead?” she said sharply. “Do your job properly.”
She pointed toward the Scorpion Clan members behind him. “Their lives depend on you.”
Remus froze.
He looked back at the group.
Fear was clearly visible on their faces.
They were relying on him.
‘What was I thinking…?’ he thought, clenching his fists slightly. ‘They came here trusting us… trusting me… It’s my responsibility to protect them.’
He took a deep breath.
“Understood.”
Camilla nodded slightly, a faint smile appearing on her face.
She turned her head to look at the others—
Then turned back toward Remus again.
He was gone.
Her expression froze.
She quickly looked around.
No one.
No footsteps.
No presence.
Her breath hitched.
‘Was all of that… an illusion? No… that can’t be…’
Then—
THUD.
THUD.
THUD.
Heavy sounds echoed from all around her.
Like bodies falling to the ground.
Camilla slowly turned her head.
And what she saw—
Shattered her composure.
The bodies of the Scorpion Clan members lay scattered across the ground.
Lifeless.
Cold.
Blood pooling beneath them.
Their eyes were empty.
Their bodies broken.
A violent jolt of shock ran through her.
Her breathing became uneven.
“N-No…”
She took a step back.
Her hands trembled.
Her chest tightened.
“This… this isn’t real…”
Her voice shook as she whispered, “Calm down… this is not reality… it’s all an illusion…”
She closed her eyes tightly.
“This is not real.”
“This is not real.”
She forced herself to breathe slowly.
Inhale.
Exhale.
Gradually—
Her heartbeat steadied.
Her mind cleared.
When she opened her eyes again, her expression had hardened.
“Lets move forward,” she said to herself. “The only way to break these illusions is to pass through this place as quickly as possible… without fear.”
Her gaze sharpened.
“This fog feeds on fear.”
“And I won’t give it what it wants.”
With that—
She stepped forward.
One step.
Then another.
As she moved—
The fog in front of her began to thin slightly.
The path ahead slowly became clearer.
Camilla narrowed her eyes.
“Good…”
“It’s working.”
———
Meanwhile—
James, Clara, Elias, Maera, and the rest of their small group found themselves in a completely different situation.
The moment they stepped deeper into the fog—
Something changed.
They were no longer alone.
From all sides—
A massive group of monsters surrounded them.
Dozens… no, hundreds of creatures slowly emerged from the mist.
Some were towering beasts with twisted limbs and glowing eyes. Others crawled across the ground with elongated claws, their bodies deformed and unnatural. Some had multiple heads, each letting out distorted growls, while others looked almost human… but their faces were hollow and rotting.
The air became suffocating.
James clenched his fists.
‘I was sure I was heading in the right direction… I was following Lucifer… so how did this happen?’
He glanced around quickly.
The Scorpion Clan members were gone.
Completely gone.
Now it was just them.
Surrounded.
And the monsters were moving.
Slowly at first—
Then suddenly—
They charged.
Dozens of creatures rushed toward them at full speed.
James shouted, “Damn it! Why are we the ones who got separated?!”
Maera stepped forward slightly and said firmly, “Relax, James… did you forget? This forest feeds on our fears and creates illusions. Don’t worry… this isn’t real.”
James froze for a moment.
Then he took a deep breath.
“You’re right…”
He exhaled slowly.
“Sorry for panicking.”
He looked at them with a small smile.
“I’m glad at least you guys are here with me.”
“We’ll get through this.”
Clara looked at the approaching monsters and said uneasily, “But what about these things? Are they really just illusions? They look… way too real.”
James nodded firmly.
“Don’t worry. They’re fake.”
He raised his voice slightly.
“The only way to die here is if we give in to fear.”
“So don’t be afraid.”
“Just move forward.”
“They’re not real.”
The others nodded hesitantly.
Then—
They began walking forward.
Straight toward the incoming monsters.
James stepped ahead of everyone.
“Listen,” he said, “if they are real and I get attacked first… you all start fighting immediately.”
Maera frowned.
“But you could die—”
James cut her off.
“Nothing will happen to me.”
Without hesitation—
He walked forward.
The monsters lunged at him.
Claws.
Fangs.
Screams.
But—
They passed right through him.
Like smoke.
Like illusions.
James stopped.
Then slowly—
A grin spread across his face.
“I knew it…”
He chuckled lightly.
“It’s all fake.”
He turned around and said confidently, “See? It’s just an illusion, guys—”
Then—
He froze.
His blood ran cold.
What he saw—
Was not what he expected.
Clara.
Elias.
Maera.
They were being torn apart.
Monsters ripped into their bodies.
Claws pierced flesh.
Blood splattered across the ground.
Their screams echoed through the fog.
“James—help us!”
“It hurts!”
“Please—!”
James stood there.
Frozen.
His mind refused to process it.
“N-no…”
Tears welled up in his eyes.
“This… this isn’t real…”
“It can’t be real…”
His voice trembled.
Then suddenly—
“I’m coming!”
He shouted desperately.
“Transform!”
In an instant—
A red suit materialized around his body.
The armor of the Red Ranger formed perfectly over him.
Without hesitation—
He charged forward.
His attacks cut through the monsters.
One after another—
They fell.
But it was too late.
Clara.
Elias.
Maera.
They were already on the ground.
Broken.
Barely breathing.
Their limbs were torn apart.
Blood soaked the ground beneath them.
Maera looked at him weakly.
“It’s… your fault…”
Clara gasped painfully.
“Because of you… we’re like this…”
James staggered back.
His body trembled uncontrollably.
“No… no… no… no…”
His voice cracked.
“It can’t be real…”
“It can’t be…”
Then—
He screamed.
“NOOOOOOOOO!”
