Chapter 2234: Chapter 2234: Ancestral Rites (Part 4)
After passing through the estate gate and driving for about fifteen minutes, they reached a courtyard halfway up the mountain, which was used by the family for resting during their visits for ancestral worship. Although the facilities inside were simple, they were quite comprehensive. At this moment, because Gu Qingheng and his wife were staying overnight, the bedding and other items had already been replaced with new ones.
The grave was on the mountain top and could only be reached on foot, which took about five or six minutes.
After bathing and changing clothes in the courtyard, Yang Ruxin and Gu Qingheng set off up the mountain.
Gu Qingheng held a basket containing incense and candles in one hand and grasped Yang Ruxin’s hand with the other as they walked up. The greenery on this mountain was excellent, the air exceptionally fresh, and occasionally little squirrels or birds appeared in the trees, showing no fear of people at all.
After climbing dozens of steps and passing through a small pine forest, they reached an octagonal pavilion with flying eaves and dougong at the mountain’s peak. Inside the pavilion was a white round tomb.
As they approached, a little gray squirrel was surprisingly perched on top of the tomb, happily munching on pine nuts. Upon seeing people arrive, it swiftly darted onto a nearby tree but didn’t leave, instead extending its little head curiously to observe below.
In front of the tomb was a white jade tombstone, inscribed with "The Tomb of Beloved Daughter Man Zhi." Before the tombstone was an offering table with an incense burner and offerings, which were freshly made pastries.
All around the pavilion, blooming chrysanthemums filled the area.
Yang Ruxin was not very knowledgeable about chrysanthemums, but she could recognize that there were quite a few priceless varieties among them.
Chai Qin stepped forward to help arrange the offerings, but Gu Qingheng declined her offer. Together with Yang Ruxin, he personally placed the offerings and lit the incense and candles before kneeling on the prayer cushions.
"Mother, your unfilial son Yeye has brought his wife to see you..." Gu Qingheng spoke, tears already streaming down uncontrollably.
Yang Ruxin initially thought she wouldn’t cry, but at this moment, she felt her nose sting fiercely, unable to hold back as the tears rolled down her cheeks: "Mother, I came with my husband to see you."
Meanwhile, Chai Qin and Gu Qiao behind them were already weeping like rain-soaked figures.
After a long time, when the crying was done and the incense and candles had burned out, their words finished, Gu Qingheng wiped his tears, stood up by himself, and then helped Yang Ruxin to her feet: "Mother, we will often come back to visit you in the future." With that, they returned to the main courtyard.
After a simple lunch and a bit of rest, Yang Ruxin accompanied Gu Qingheng on a stroll around the estate.
"The environment here is really nice," Yang Ruxin couldn’t help but praise as they walked.
"This place was specially built for my mother by my grandfather. Besides the original flowers, trees, and plants on the mountain, many additional trees were also planted," Gu Qingheng nodded. "They even built the road down the mountain... didn’t you notice how smoothly the carriage ran?"
Yang Ruxin nodded: "Moreover, I noticed that from the moment we entered the estate, there were not only trees on both sides but also many flower beds."
"My mother loved all kinds of flowers and plants during her lifetime. In my memory, she tended to those plants every day, saying that flowers and plants also have a life; how you treat them is how they will repay you," Gu Qingheng chuckled. "When I was young, I didn’t understand what it meant, but my mother said, ’If you treat the plants well, they will bloom beautiful flowers for you to enjoy. If not, they’ll give you dead branches and withered leaves...’"
