"Xiaotian, hurry and sit down to continue eating, the donkey meat soup hasn’t arrived yet." Dao Xuzi waved his hand, "Those people are nothing to worry about."
Tian Ba glanced at everyone, indeed, from the young to the old, there was hardly a trace of fear on their faces, as if they weren’t about to face ferocious mountain bandits. So, he let it go. Since no one cared, he might as well eat. At worst, they would fight it out with them later.
The meal continued rather uneventfully, and only when everyone’s belly was bloated to satisfaction did they finish. The group stood up, settled the bill, and left.
The shopkeeper kindly reminded them to beware of the mountain bandits.
Yang Ruxin thanked him and led the group out of the town. By then, the sun was veering west.
But, as soon as they reached the dock and hadn’t even boarded the boat, the sound of hoofbeats came from behind, and suddenly the entire dock was surrounded.
Tian Ba quickly called everyone to board the boat, then led a few people to face the leader of the mountain bandits, "Gentlemen, we are with the Canal Gang. I am Tian Ba. What can we do for you?"
Meanwhile, Yang Ruxin indicated that those who couldn’t fight should board the boat first, and the rest could do as they wished.
"Tian Ba, don’t you recognize me?" The leader, a thin dark man, smiled, "Is your intel really that outdated?"
"Second Leader?" Tian Ba frowned, finally realizing he looked familiar. He had met this man before when he was acquainted with the First Leader, but now the man had grown a beard, making him unrecognizable at first. The rumors were true; the former First Leader had indeed met his end.
"Nonsense, he’s now our Dongtou Mountain’s First Leader." A mountain bandit nearby shouted.
"First Leader," Tian Ba clasped his fists, "What do you mean by this?"
"What do I mean?" The First Leader snorted, "You hurt my brothers, so how should we settle this?"
"Then how does the First Leader suggest we settle it?" Tian Ba’s expression turned grim.
"Of course, there will be compensation. Don’t say I’m not giving you any face; considering you’re from the Canal Gang, just give each of my injured brothers one thousand taels of silver as a hardship fee." The First Leader waved his hand with an air of generosity, "Once we get the silver, we’re even."
Someone nearby immediately let out a snort of laughter.
The First Leader’s eyes widened as he looked over.
"Who do you think you are?" Sanni, not intimidated at all, stared back, "We’re just afraid that even if we have the silver, you won’t live to take it."
Among the mountain bandits, one of them shivered after seeing who was standing opposite, then lowered his head and quietly started retreating backward. Luckily, everyone’s attention was on the front, and no one noticed him.
"Little girl, you’re refusing a toast only to drink a forfeit?" The First Leader’s face turned dark.
"You aren’t worthy of offering a toast or a forfeit." Zhou Xiao sneered.
"You little punk, you think you’re something special?" The First Leader, disdained by the two youngsters, flared up, "Since it’s like this..."
Tian Ba hurriedly raised his hand, "First Leader, let’s talk this over."
Yang Ruxin naturally noted Tian Ba’s goodwill and her impression of this average-looking man improved significantly.
"What now?" Unfortunately, little Sanni was not one to shy away from trouble, especially with her big sister and brother-in-law present; she had no fear and took two steps forward.
