Gu Jiao had put on the mask to signal to Xiao Heng, letting him know the intensity of the search. However, she never expected that they would even inspect the chest area.
It seemed the one at risk of exposure wasn’t Xiao Heng, but herself.
Officers from Jingzhao Office searched the main hall, while the officers from the Commandery Office went upstairs.
Wang Xu had seen the Eldest Imperial Grandson before.
That being the case, both Xiao Heng and Gu Jiao were in fact at risk of being exposed.
The people from Tianqiong Academy were being searched one by one. Unconsciously, everyone placed Gu Jiao at the end of the line. They didn't know why; they didn't even know Gu Jiao was a woman. They just subconsciously felt they should be inspected ahead of her.
The second-to-last person was Zhou Tong.
“Their inspection is a bit rough, but they don’t mean any harm. Don’t worry, and don’t get angry.” Zhou Tong said, turning to Gu Jiao.
He was worried that Gu Jiao might stand up for her companions and end up beating up the officers.
Gu Jiao seriously pondered whether it would be better to be discovered and arrested or to beat up the officers and run.
Meanwhile, Wang Xu had reached the private room next to Gu Chengfeng’s.
After checking the guests inside, he politely apologized for the disturbance and turned to leave.
“My Lord, this is the last room.” said the accompanying guard.
The door was slightly ajar.
A skilled martial artist was capable of identifying people by their breathing.
There were people inside, and not just one—two of them.
Wang Xu raised his hand and slowly pushed the door open.
At the same time, everyone else at Tianqiong Academy had been inspected, leaving only Gu Jiao.
The female officer first removed Gu Jiao's mask and then pinched her cheek.
To be honest, the absence of any traces of a human skin mask was already clear enough, but just to be sure, they needed to inspect the body as well.
How cunning must the woman they were hunting be to drive these officials to such measures?
Gu Jiao tightened her grip on the silver needle in her hand.
Should she reveal herself, or not?
Creak——
The door to Gu Chengfeng’s private room was pushed open.
Wang Xu stepped inside.
Suddenly, a foot kicked straight at him, hitting him squarely in the chest and sending him flying backward.
He flew right over the second-floor railing and crashed down heavily into the main hall on the first floor.
Thanks to his decent martial arts skills though, he managed to twist mid-air and stabilize his landing.
Still, it caused quite a commotion.
Everyone looked up in unison, even the female officer about to inspect Gu Jiao paused her actions.
A woman appeared at the railing, glanced down at everyone from above, and then turned and ran!
The female officer hurriedly shouted, “Quick, chase her! It’s her!”
Everyone rushed to catch the woman.
Gu Jiao: That was close, I almost got exposed.
The woman ran downstairs in one breath, but both the front and back doors were blocked. There was no way she could escape, even if she grew wings.
Ming Junwang sat quietly on the floor of the cellar, waiting for the search to be over.
His trusted bodyguard said, “Junwang, listen! It sounds like they’ve found someone. They’re shouting, ‘It’s her, hurry and chase!’”
Ming Junwang breathed a sigh of relief, “That’s great, now they should leave. Turns out they weren’t looking for me… Once they’re gone, it’ll all be fine. I wasn’t discovered… I wasn’t discovered… The task Imperial Father assigned to me, I didn’t mess it up—”
Before he could finish speaking, however, the cellar door was pulled open.
A slender figure darted down swiftly, so fast that Ming Junwang didn’t even have time to kick the person out. By the time everything sank in, the slender figure was already crouching in front of him.
Then, their eyes met, wide-eyed.
Shangguan Yan raised his hand in greeting and smiled, "Nephew, long time no see."
Let’s go home together, auntie will take you flying.
Ming Junwang: “...!!”
Ming Junwang: Didn’t you lose your memory?! How do you still remember how to drag me into trouble!
Shangguan Yan was taken away by the officers from the Commandery Office, along with Ming Junwang.
The officers from Jingzhao Office were furious.
They were clearly the ones who arrived first, but in the end, all the credit was snatched by the Commandery Office!
Inside the carriage returning to the imperial palace, Ming Junwang felt utterly miserable.
Had he known things would turn out like this, he would have been better off sitting upright in the private room. At worst, he would’ve just gained a reputation for being an idle prince. But what was he doing hiding in the cellar?
It looked suspicious no matter what.
"Sorry to trouble Junwang, but we need you to accompany us back to the imperial palace to meet His Majesty." said Wang Xu, who was escorting the carriage on horseback outside.
The Commandery Office served as the Emperor's eyes and ears. Upon discovering Ming Junwang suspiciously hiding in a cellar, how could they not take him to the Emperor?
Other officials wouldn’t dare arrest him, but the Commandery Office wasn’t afraid.
Ming Junwang deeply felt that Shangguan Yan had dragged him into a pit.
She must have done it on purpose, knowing she couldn't escape, so she pulled him down with her.
This aunt of his——last time she caused trouble for his father, and now she was doing the same to him.
Ming Junwang hadn’t seen Shangguan Yan for many years, and he no longer recognized her. So how did Shangguan Yan recognize him?
Didn’t she have amnesia?
No, he had to report this to his Imperial Grandfather!
He had to accuse Shangguan Yan of pretending to have amnesia, of deceiving the Emperor!
After the people from the Commandery Office and Jingzhao Office left, Xu Fengxian cheerfully greeted the guests, "Let’s continue! Continue! Ladies, keep singing!"
Tianxiang Pavilion quickly returned to its earlier lively state.
Gu Jiao found an excuse to leave the Tianqiong Academy’s area and headed upstairs.
"They didn’t discover you, did they?" Gu Jiao asked Xiao Heng.
Xiao Heng stood by the window facing the street, gazing in the direction where Wang Xu and his group had left. With a complicated expression, he said, “Those were people from the Commandery Office.”
Gu Jiao murmured, "Commandery Office?"
The State of Zhao had no Commandery Office.
It was a military office unique to the State of Yan. She had learned about it from Mu Chuan on the day she entered the imperial palace. In the outer court of the imperial palace, the east side housed the Office of the Imperial Clan, the Six Ministries, and the State Ceremonial Bureau, while the west side was home to the Imperial Court of Judicial Review and the Four Districts of the Commandery Office."
However, Gu Jiao didn’t quite understand the exact functions of the Commandery Office.

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
