With a swoosh, an arrow shot through the spot where the coachman had just been sitting and embedded itself deeply into an old locust tree. The tail of the arrow wobbled, and the fletching blurred from the force, showing how strong the shot had been.

Gu Jiao was about to rush forward when suddenly a row of spear traps rose from the ground ahead. The horse, startled, couldn’t slow down in time.

Gu Jiao grabbed the reins, forcefully turning the horse in another direction. The sudden sharp turn caused the carriage to swerve, and the horse stopped, while the carriage tipped over onto the ground.

In that instant of falling, Xiao Heng shielded Gu Jiao’s waist and head with his hands.

At the same time, Gu Jiao supported his head with her hands.

Neither cared for themselves, but both protected the other.

The coachman’s eyes rolled back, and he fainted.

The overturned carriage lay behind a large tree. Gu Jiao pulled Xiao Heng’s hand, helping him out of the carriage, using the tree to conceal their figures.

Xiao Heng glanced at the spear traps not far away, then looked up at the still-unused large net. He immediately understood that this was a premeditated assassination.

Someone didn’t want them to treat the former Crown Princess!

“Come out, Xiao Liulang, you can’t escape.”

A faint male voice came from the other end of the path.

Xiao Heng might not recognize this voice, but Gu Jiao was very familiar with it.

Gu Jiao gave Xiao Heng a look, signaling him to stay where he was, and then calmly walked out from behind the tree. She looked at Han shizi, who was riding a tall, majestic horse and holding a red-tasseled spear, and said indifferently, "So it's you."

Han Ye looked down at Gu Jiao from above and said, "Surprised, Xiao Liulang? No, you're not the real Xiao Liulang. The beauty from Canglan Women's Academy is. Who exactly are you?"

Gu Jiao replied, "Who am I? Why don’t you go ask Nangong Li in the underworld?"

Xiao Heng silently observed Han Ye. He was stalling for time; it seemed the Crown Princess was close to death…

Han Ye sneered, "What arrogance. Do you really think that killing a crippled Nangong Li makes you that capable? You're no match for me! I'll give you a chance to live—if you're willing to join the Han Family, all grievances between us will be wiped clean. But if you remain stubborn, then I will have no choice but to deal with the Han Family's greatest threat right here and now!"

Without hesitation, Gu Jiao said, "Fine, I agree. From now on, I’ll be the Han family’s aide."

As she said this, she boldly walked up to the horse and extended her hand to Han Ye, "Han shizi, looking forward to working with you!"

Han Ye was at a loss for words: “...!!”

What the heck?

Han Ye was utterly bewildered, his thoughts completely disrupted!

In a moment of dazed confusion, he lifted his arm and shook hands with Gu Jiao.

Gu Jiao smiled faintly.

Alarm bells rang in Han Ye’s mind.

He tried to dodge, but Gu Jiao had already grabbed his hand and yanked him off the horse!

Caught off guard, he crashed to the ground!

Gu Jiao then lifted her foot and stomped viciously toward his chest!

Gu Jiao didn’t underestimate her opponent; she put almost all her strength into this kick.

Han Ye, having grown up in military camps and experienced numerous battles, had never encountered someone so decisive and ruthless. The sheer killing intent made even a Han Family heir like him shudder!

However, Han Ye wasn’t an ordinary expert. He quickly reacted, grabbing his spear with both hands and blocking Gu Jiao’s kick.

With a *crack*, his left arm dislocated!

Such... immense strength!

Even though he hadn't had time to gather enough internal force, for his arm to be dislocated by a single stomp——this youth was definitely the first!

Using the strength in his right arm, Han Ye forcefully pushed the spear, causing Gu Jiao to stumble back several steps. He himself flipped back onto his feet with a swift kip-up.

He planted the spear into the ground and quickly reattached his dislocated arm!

For most people, such an injury would require rest, but he was able to ignore the pain and immediately re-engage in the fight.

Gu Jiao narrowed her eyes slightly. As expected of Shengdu’s number one expert among his peers.

The first time she managed to ambush him was because he had let his guard down, plus she used various tricks and hidden weapons, barely succeeding by luck. It didn’t mean he was weak.

The second time they confronted each other was at her home in Yangliu Alley, but he didn’t even use half of his strength, and the Black Wind King interrupted, bringing the fight to a halt.

Today was their first real head-to-head battle.

Han Ye was far stronger than any death warrior or embroidered-uniform guard she had encountered in the State of Yan.

But right now, the danger she faced wasn’t just from Han Ye.

From the direction Han Ye had originally ridden from, two more skilled experts had arrived in time.

Han Ye pointed his spear toward the tree where Xiao Heng was hiding and ordered, "Kill that person too!"

That person.

This meant Han Ye didn’t know that it was Xiao Heng behind the tree; he just needed to eliminate any witnesses.

In fact, Gu Jiao had a lingering doubt in her heart. The Han Family had just experienced a major incident, and Second Master Han's body was barely cold, yet Han Ye, in the midst of this turmoil, was already attempting to assassinate the physician the Emperor had summoned for the former Crown Princess.

Was Han Ye really unafraid of death?

Or did Han Ye have absolute confidence that he could silence everyone, leaving no trace behind?

Han Ye wasn’t like Han Che. He wasn’t reckless; he was meticulous and exceptionally skilled. Gu Jiao believed he was confident he could kill her.

But more than that, Gu Jiao guessed that Han Ye had no other choice.

Or perhaps the Crown Prince had no other choice.

There was something odd about the former Crown Princess’s injuries. They couldn’t allow her to wake up. Was it because if she did, she would be able to identify the culprit?

If that were true, Han Ye’s actions today would make sense.

The two experts charged toward Xiao Heng.

Gu Jiao threw out two black gunpowder balls.

“Dodge!”

Han Ye shouted!

The two experts perfectly dodged the attack.

It seemed Han Ye had come prepared and was well aware of her methods.

Dealing with Han Ye alone was already challenging, and now with two more enemies, Gu Jiao was feeling stretched thin.

The two experts continued charging toward Xiao Heng. Gu Jiao rushed forward to block them, but Han Ye thrust his spear at her!

Gu Jiao tapped her toes against the tree, took a few steps up the trunk, then flipped in midair. She landed on one knee on the opposite side of Han Ye.

She flicked two Tanghua needles from her fingers. The two experts, thinking they were more black gunpowder balls, hurriedly dodged again.

Gu Jiao reached Xiao Heng and took off her back basket, handing it to him. Her eyes scanned the surroundings sharply, “You go ahead. Take the medicine chest to the Imperial Advisor.”

“Can he open it?” Xiao Heng asked.

Xiao Heng knew a bit about the secret of the little medicine chest—namely, that no one but Gu Jiao could open it.

Gu Jiao replied, “If not, you can try. Didn’t you once manage to break it open?”

That was a long time ago, back when they were still in the countryside of the State of Zhao. Gu Jiao had been whipped by Marquis Gu, and when Xiao Heng was applying medicine for her, he accidentally knocked over the little medicine chest.

It was then that he discovered the box had an unusually large capacity.

He never mentioned it to Gu Jiao, only bringing it up recently.

“Wasn’t it because you didn’t close the lid properly?” Xiao Heng asked.

“I closed it properly.” Gu Jiao replied. “If it doesn’t open, just kick it.”

Xiao Heng: “…”

The little medicine chest: “…”

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
