Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)

Gu Chengfeng waited outside the imperial palace for quite a while, long enough for his temper to flare up.

"Can’t you hurry up, Wang Xu? I still need to pick up the kid later!"

You're holding me up from doing important things!

I’ll count to three. If you’re not out by then, I’ll come into the imperial palace to find you myself!

Wang Xu finally came out.

He had just led a team to search Tianxiang Pavilion yesterday, and Gu Chengfeng had seen him before. The distinct emblem on his official uniform made it hard not to recognize him.

After leaving the Palace Entry Gate, Wang Xu got into his carriage to head back to his residence.

Gu Chengfeng quietly followed behind.

Wang Xu wasn’t in a hurry, and the carriage moved at a leisurely pace. As they gradually moved away from the imperial palace, more shops and pedestrians appeared on the streets, causing the carriage to slow down even more.

Gu Chengfeng followed at a distance, neither too close nor too far.

When Wang Xu's carriage passed by a restaurant, it was blocked by another carriage.

A middle-aged man dressed like a steward stepped out of the other carriage. He smiled and cupped his hands toward Wang Xu’s carriage, saying something that Gu Chengfeng couldn’t hear. Wang Xu got off the carriage and followed the man into the restaurant.

Gu Chengfeng didn’t follow directly. Instead, he went to a clothing shop across the street and bought a set of women's clothes. He was too frugal to buy any jewelry, so he just used a hair ribbon and wore a veil, disguising himself as an ordinary commoner woman.

He entered the restaurant, saying he was looking for someone. The waiter, seeing that the other party was plainly dressed and didn’t look like the daughter of a distinguished family, couldn’t be bothered to greet her and told her to go find the person herself.

Gu Chengfeng quickly spotted the middle-aged man in one of the private rooms at the far end of the corridor on the second floor.

He was standing guard at the door, along with two death warriors.

What was with the heavy security? What were they up to?

With death warriors at the door, eavesdropping in the hallway was out of the question.

Gu Chengfeng entered an empty private room, opened the window, and climbed onto the roof.

Using his qinggong skills, he arrived at the roof above Wang Xu’s room. He lay flat, carefully lifted a roof tile halfway, and peered through the gap.

Hmm?

An old man?

Dressed in luxurious clothing, the old man sat in a grand armchair, both of his hands resting on the handle of a yellow pear wood cane.

Since Gu Chengfeng was right above him, he couldn’t see the old man’s face clearly.

On the other hand, Wang Xu was sitting across from the old man, and Gu Chengfeng could see part of Wang Xu’s face from that angle.

"Old Master Han, what is this about?" Wang Xu asked.

Old Master Han? Han Ye’s grandfather, the head of the Han Family?

Gu Chengfeng perked up his ears.

Old Master Han gave a look to the servant by his side.

The servant, holding a brocade box in both hands, walked toward Wang Xu.

Wang Xu glanced at the box and asked seriously, “What’s the meaning of this?”

Old Master Han gestured with his hand, and the servant opened the box.

Gu Chengfeng wanted to see what was inside, but the servant’s head was blocking his view.

Gu Chengfeng gritted his teeth.

However, he did notice Wang Xu's body tensing, though it was hard to tell whether he was excited or shocked.

Was this old man trying to bribe Wang Xu?

The Han Family was Imperial Consort Han’s maiden family, aligned with the Crown Prince’s faction.

This reminded Gu Chengfeng of the complexity of Great Yan’s imperial family. In the State of Zhao, imperial princes were forbidden from forming their own factions, but Great Yan’s Emperor didn’t seem to care. The ten great families openly supported the princes from their own families, and the Emperor didn’t appear particularly upset about it.

The only family the Emperor ever suppressed was the Xuanyuan Family.

They were completely annihilated.

Old Master Han smiled and said, "I know you've been eyeing this treasure of mine for a long time, so today, I'm giving it to you."

Wang Xu withdrew his gaze from the box and said seriously, "I can’t accept something for nothing. Old Master Han’s actions make this junior feel uneasy."

Old Master Han laughed heartily, "No need to be so tense. It’s just an antique. I can afford it. If you like it, I have plenty more at my residence."

Wang Xu asked, "What guidance does Old Master Han have for me?"

Old Master Han replied, "You’re a smart man, so I’ll speak plainly. There’s something I don’t quite understand, and I’d like Commandant Wang to help clear it up."

Wang Xu responded, "As long as it doesn’t concern matters of the court, this junior will answer everything to the best of my ability."

The Wang and Han families were among the most prominent families in Shengdu, and in terms of background, the Wang Family was even more established than the Han Family. However, Imperial Consort Wang hadn’t birthed a son, only two princesses.

Thus, in the eyes of the public, the Han Family, which had the Crown Prince, held more power.

In reality, though, from what Gu Chengfeng had gathered through various channels, the Wang Family had more favor from the Emperor.

Old Master Han spoke slowly, "I've heard the Eldest Imperial Grandson has returned."

Wang Xu frowned, "Oh? I haven’t heard of this yet. It seems Old Master Han is really well-informed."

Old Master Han smiled, "There's no need for insinuations. After all, I am the Crown Prince’s uncle. The Crown Prince just went to the Imperial Advisor's Hall to visit the former Crown Princess, and His Majesty was there as well. The Eldest Imperial Grandson was also present."

The implication was that it wasn’t because he paid particular attention to the former Crown Princess, but that the Crown Prince just happened to encounter the Eldest Imperial Grandson there.

Since the Crown Prince was Old Master Han’s nephew, how could he not share such important information with him?

Wang Xu gave Old Master Han a deep look, "So, what does this matter have to do with Old Master Han’s invitation for a meeting?"

Old Master Han replied, "To be frank, I suspect that this Eldest Imperial Grandson is a fake."

Wang Xu’s expression changed, "Why does Old Master Han say that?"

Old Master Han, with a meaningful tone, said, "My men were transporting ore to Qidu. Just yesterday, they sent word back by carrier pigeon, saying they saw the Eldest Imperial Grandson there. Qidu is at least seven or eight days' journey from here. I don’t believe the Eldest Imperial Grandson has sprouted wings and flown here."

Wang Xu furrowed his brow, "Your men recognize the Eldest Imperial Grandson?"

Old Master Han, seemingly anticipating this question, said with a smile, "You don’t think the Han Family’s influence is so weak that we can’t even get hold of a portrait of the Eldest Imperial Grandson, do you?"

It was true they had a portrait, but the story about spotting the Eldest Imperial Grandson in Qidu was fabricated.

However, how else could they sow doubt in Wang Xu’s mind?

Whether Wang Xu believed him or not, he would surely go to the Imperial Advisor's Hall to verify the claim.

Gu Chengfeng clenched his fist. This old fox had quite the tactics.

Wang Xu looked at Old Master Han with a serious expression, "So Old Master Han wants me to expose the Eldest Imperial Grandson?"

Old Master Han didn’t shy away, nodding, "Exposing him would benefit our Han Family. Yes, that’s exactly my goal."

Bluntly stating his intentions, he made it clear that he wanted to remove any obstacles for the Crown Prince. Everyone here was smart, so why pretend to be innocent and virtuous?

Wang Xu said earnestly, "If he’s truly an impostor, exposing him is my duty. Old Master Han, please take your gift back."

Wang Xu’s actions were not for the Han Family but for the Emperor!

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
