One or two days might not matter, but over time, people would start worrying if the father-daughter bond between the Emperor and Shangguan Yan was being rekindled.
This was a very dangerous sign.
Not everything had to happen before action was taken. It was crucial to take precautions and prevent potential issues.
Even if it was just the faintest suspicion, it had to be crushed immediately.
Gu Chengfeng thought for a moment and said to Xiao Heng, “Maybe it doesn’t have to be so complicated. Perhaps your mother saw the culprit.”
“That possibility can’t be ruled out.” Xiao Heng replied. “If she really did see it, we’ll soon find out when someone else is sent to take the blame.”
Just like the case before, the person who attempted to assassinate him that night was clearly Han Ye, but the one who was punished was the Han Family’s second master.
Gu Jiao drank the last of her noodle soup until it was completely dry. As she lowered the large bowl, two slender hands simultaneously reached out toward her.
One was Gu Changqing’s, and the other was Xiao Heng’s.
Both of them held a clean handkerchief.
Gu Jiao blinked. Why did this feel like another impossible dilemma?
She slightly raised her left hand, and Gu Changqing’s face darkened.
She slightly raised her right hand, and Xiao Heng’s face turned grim.
Her eyes shifted slightly, and suddenly she stretched out both hands, grabbing the two handkerchiefs at the same time.
Treating them equally, without any favoritism.
She used both handkerchiefs to wipe her mouth while dashing out of the room.
She had already disappeared when her voice echoed back from the hallway, "I'm going to find the Imperial Advisor——"
The two men stared at each other for a full three seconds before suddenly jumping to their feet and shouting toward the doorway, "Your foot——"
That girl, running around with a sprained foot!
……
Gu Jiao’s foot was no longer a big problem.
Her body had been well-trained by her and had excellent recovery ability.
She went to the library pavilion.
The library pavilion had three floors. The first floor was the largest, housing the most ordinary books. The second floor was slightly smaller, containing more specialized and rare books. The third floor was the smallest and stored secrets related to the State of Yan and the Imperial Advisor's Hall.
For instance, the State of Yan Kingdom’s six national books were once displayed on the third floor.
Gu Jiao had only ever visited the first floor.
Ye Qing was organizing books in front of a row of shelves. Seeing Gu Jiao enter, he greeted her politely, "Young Master Xiao."
Gu Jiao nodded in return, “Ye Qing.”
Ye Qing handed the books in his hand to a nearby assisting disciple, “Take these two books outside to dry; they’re a bit damp. I’ll come back to organize the rest in a moment.”
“Yes, senior brother.” The disciple replied, receiving the books with both hands before bowing and leaving.
Ye Qing led Gu Jiao to the small tea area, stepped up a short flight of stairs, and kneeled on a cushion across from her at the tea table.
Gu Jiao also knelt in the same manner, sitting across from him.
He picked up a pot of tea from a small wooden bucket filled with ice cubes, smiled slightly, and said, “It’s honey flower tea.”
He poured a cup for Gu Jiao first, then poured one for himself.
Gu Jiao had just eaten a large bowl of noodles, and to be honest, her stomach was a bit full, so she only took a small sip.
There seemed to be a hint of mint in the tea, making it refreshingly fragrant.
Ye Qing smiled and asked, "Is Young Master Xiao here to see my master? My master is on the third floor with His Majesty, and Commandant Wang just went up as well. I figure they won’t finish talking anytime soon. If Young Master Xiao has something urgent, I can deliver a message on your behalf."
The disciple from the Imperial Advisor's Hall who was serving tea and snacks to the two was briefly surprised by Ye Qing’s words.
Their Lord Imperial Advisor never allowed interruptions when speaking with someone, and there was never such a thing as relaying urgent matters.
What made this Young Master Xiao so special?
Gu Jiao wasn’t aware of the Imperial Advisor’s strict protocol and thought it was just a standard practice to ask for an audience with him. However, she didn’t absolutely have to meet him at the moment.
Gu Jiao took another sip of tea and asked, “Are those secret codes taught by your master?”
Ye Qing looked confused, “What secret codes?”
Gu Jiao: “Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet.”
Ye Qing reflexively blurted out, “East, west, south, north, white in the center.”
Gu Jiao narrowed her eyes, “So, it’s you guys.”
Shangguan Qing visited the Imperial Advisor's Hall once every two years, staying for a few days each time. It was said that he had a good relationship with the disciples of the Imperial Advisor's Hall.
It was obvious that these so-called secret codes were taught by the Imperial Advisor.
Ye Qing gave an awkward smile, "The Eldest Imperial Grandson must have told Young Master Xiao… it’s just some harmless jokes. Young Master Xiao need not take them seriously."
Gu Jiao snorted, “Old and improper.”
Ye Qing forced a laugh.
To be fair, it wasn’t his master being improper. It was the Eldest Imperial Grandson who was mischievous. Who would have thought that such a young boy would be filled with so many crafty ideas?
When it came to studying, he would fall asleep, but when it came to learning these unorthodox tricks, his memory was better than anyone's.
"Can I take a look at your second floor?" Gu Jiao asked.
Ye Qing replied, “If it’s Young Master Xiao, then yes.”
Others, however, couldn't just go up without the Imperial Advisor's approval.
But his master seemed to take special care of this Young Master Xiao. With the exception of a few particularly special places, Young Master Xiao could almost move around freely.
Gu Jiao and Ye Qing went up to the second floor.
Only two disciples were on duty there.
When they saw Ye Qing, they respectfully greeted him, "Senior brother."
Ye Qing nodded and said to them, "Carry on with your work, I'll show Young Master Xiao around."
"Yes." The two disciples stepped aside.
Ye Qing gestured to Gu Jiao, "After you, Young Master Xiao."
Gu Jiao strolled around casually, seeing books on agriculture, law, and some more specialized topics like advanced mathematics, astronomy, and geography. These books were more in-depth and comprehensive compared to similar ones available on the market.
"What’s over there?" Gu Jiao put back the agricultural book in her hand and looked toward a row of shelves on the right.
On that row of shelves, instead of books, there were scrolls.
Ye Qing glanced over and replied, "Those are portraits, from various prominent families."
Oh?
This was quite an opportunity to gather intelligence.
"May I take a look?" Gu Jiao asked politely.
"Of course." Ye Qing smiled and answered.
Showing courtesy to Gu Jiao was one thing, but Gu Jiao returning that respect made their interaction much more pleasant.
It was far better than dealing with those nobles who smiled on the surface but were full of disdain in their actions.
Gu Jiao approached a bookshelf.
There were originally wooden plaques marking the different prominent families, but since the weather was good today, the cleaning disciples had taken the plaques down to wash.
Gu Jiao casually picked up a scroll.
Ye Qing opened his mouth as if he wanted to say something, but after hesitating, he decided it didn't matter.
Gu Jiao unrolled the scroll.
The portrait depicted a man holding a red-tasseled spear, clad in golden armor.
His features were sharp, with cold, stern eyes, and a tear-shaped mole beneath his right eye.
Seeing the face in the portrait, Gu Jiao paused.
Her gaze moved down.
Xuanyuan——
Her finger just happened to cover the first name.
Slowly, she moved her finger aside.

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
