Wang Xu proceeded on testing the next seven head eunuchs from the Office of Internal Officials to the Office of Imperial Treasures, all of whom were completely devoid of internal force.
Surprisingly, the head eunuchs of the Office of the Divine Palace, the Office of the Imperial Hall, the Office of General Supervision, and the Office of Imperial Setup turned out to be highly skilled martial artists.
This wasn't too surprising; anyone who had managed to achieve such a position in the imperial palace must have some hidden abilities.
Wang Xu understood the dynamics of power well and didn’t blame these individuals for their concealment. However, since the Emperor was determined to uncover the culprit, these four were highly suspect.
But after investigating their whereabouts, Wang Xu found that all four had perfect alibis for the night in question.
Additionally, their clothing showed no obvious flaws.
Of course, even if the garments were damaged, they could be mended, and skilled seamstresses could patch them seamlessly.
Wang Xu instructed his subordinates, “Bring me the scorpion box.”
“Yes.” The subordinate went to the storeroom and returned, holding a small iron box with both hands.
Wang Xu addressed the head eunuchs, “This contains blue-tailed scorpions, which are extremely venomous. A single sting is enough to kill an elite assassin, and there is no antidote.”
After speaking, he opened a handkerchief and unveiled a piece of hemp thread, “This is the evidence left by the culprit at the scene. I will now place it inside the scorpion box, and the scorpions inside will memorize its scent. In a moment, I’ll need the four of you to extend your hands inside. Rest assured, these trained scorpions won’t bite anything that doesn’t match the scent of the evidence.”
The four people hesitated a bit.
Wang Xu smiled faintly, and after tossing the hemp thread into the box, he first tested it himself by sticking his hand into the iron box.
Moments later, he withdrew his hand, and indeed, there wasn't the slightest trace of a bite.
The group let out a sigh of relief.
"I’ll go first." said the head eunuch of the Office of the Divine Palace.
Wang Xu gave a signal to his subordinate.
The subordinate approached him, holding the iron box.
The head eunuch of the Office of the Divine Palace inserted his hand into the hole on the box’s lid.
"That’s enough." Wang Xu said.
The Office of the Divine Palace’s head eunuch breathed a sigh of relief.
Next, the head eunuchs of the Office of Imperial Setup and the Office of General Supervision each took their turn inserting their hands into the scorpion box.
Both emerged unscathed.
When it was the Office of the Imperial Hall's head eunuch’s turn, a flicker of hesitation appeared in his eyes. His arm stiffened, and he hesitated to put his hand inside.
Wang Xu shouted sharply, “It’s him! Seize him!”
Although the scorpion box indeed contained venomous scorpions, they were not the most toxic Turkic blue-tailed scorpions, but rather some common poisonous scorpions, and the box was covered with a layer of wire mesh.
Even if the real culprit put his hand inside, he wouldn’t have been bitten.
This was all a psychological tactic, and it was clear the opponent had lost.
The guards from the Commandery Office rushed forward, and the other three head eunuchs also reacted quickly, attempting to apprehend the head eunuch of the Office of the Imperial Hall beside them.
However, this person had exceptional qinggong and leaped away in an instant.
Wang Xu coldly commanded, “Everyone, pursue him!”
The guards from the Commandery Office exerted themselves to chase after the other party.
But they couldn’t catch up.
In the blink of an eye, the person had escaped the imperial palace.
Wang Xu gritted his teeth in anger, “Split into three groups! Two teams will flank him from the front and back streets, while the rest follow me!”
With his absolute advantage in familiar terrain, Wang Xu successfully cornered the fugitive in a dead-end alley within a quarter of an hour.
Wang Xu said coldly, “I advise you to surrender without resistance. Don’t make a futile struggle. You know the Emperor’s methods well. Death isn’t frightening, but a life worse than death is!”
A fierce gleam flashed in the eyes of the head eunuch from the Office of the Imperial Hall as he lunged forward, injuring one of the Commandery Office’s guards and seizing his sword, engaging in battle with Wang Xu and the others.
It was at this moment that Wang Xu realized he had underestimated the opponent’s martial arts; their group of ten was actually powerless against him.
Wang Xu even personally stepped forward to engage, but unfortunately, he was defeated in just ten moves.
What a formidable opponent!
Since when did the Office of the Imperial Hall hide such a martial expert?
Wang Xu blocked the opponent’s attack with his sword and gritted his teeth, "Who are you? Who sent you to assassinate the former Crown Princess?"
The other party didn’t bother to respond, slashing Wang Xu’s arm with his sword.
Wang Xu fell to the ground, blood splattering everywhere.
The other party raised his sword high and aimed it fiercely at Wang Xu’s heart!
This was a desperate move to take him down with him.
Wang Xu realized he couldn’t escape and instinctively closed his eyes.
However, the fatal sword strike never came. A sharp, overwhelming surge of sword qi, swift as lightning, suddenly blasted the other party against the wall behind him.
Wang Xu opened his eyes and turned his head to see a man in black, holding a sword, approaching from the entrance of the alley under the moonlight.
Wasn’t this the expert from the Eldest Imperial Grandson’s side, the one who knocked him unconscious with a single blow?
Why was he here? And how did he send that tough guy flying with just one strike?
The Office of the Imperial Hall’s head eunuch wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth with a menacing look, clutching his chest. His sword had fallen to the ground, but he didn’t bother picking it up.
He clearly knew he couldn’t defeat Gu Changqing, so he decided to flee.
With a leap, he launched himself onto the rooftop, deftly running along the eaves and gradually disappearing into the night.
Wang Xu exclaimed in shock, "He’s the culprit, hurry and chase after him!"
Gu Changqing said calmly, “That guy is quite a formidable opponent; it would be a pity to catch him so easily.”
Wang Xu was utterly confused. Why couldn’t he understand what was happening?
The head eunuch of the Office of the Imperial Hall had been fleeing for a while when he realized the formidable expert wasn’t chasing him. He sneered, "Humph, what use is high martial skill? I still managed to shake him off!"
Just as the words left his mouth, a stick swung at him from the front, forcefully knocking him off the rooftop!
"Damn it——"
He cursed loudly as he fell flat on his face.
Gu Jiao lightly tapped her toes and landed in front of him, casually tapping a rolling pin against her palm as she strolled over, “Care for a fight, brother?”
The Office of the Imperial Hall’s head eunuch: "..."
……
A quarter of an hour later, when Wang Xu arrived at the scene clutching his injured arm, he found that the head eunuch of the Office of the Imperial Hall had been beaten to the point where he couldn’t even move his fingers.
The head eunuch looked at Wang Xu, his gaze filled with such relief, it was as if he had seen a savior.
Gu Jiao stood nearby, looking thoroughly pleased with herself.
Gu Changqing walked over and asked softly, "How was it?"
Gu Jiao replied, "Not bad, but he can’t take much of a beating."
Gu Changqing reflected seriously, "I’ll take note of that next time and be more careful not to damage too many meridians."
Wang Xu was utterly bewildered. What were they talking about? Wasn’t the main focus supposed to be solving the case? What do you mean by "next time"? What else were you planning to do!?
Gu Jiao had left the other party with just enough breath to be interrogated.
But this man was incredibly stubborn.
He let out a disdainful laugh, saying, "I… didn’t do anything… no one… instructed me… give it up… I don’t… know anything…"
"Is that so?"
Looking down at him from above, Gu Jiao pulled out a syringe containing a hallucinogen from her first aid kit, and plunged it into him!

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
