The Mu Family’s Old Master Mu also received news that Imperial Consort Wan had been banished to the cold palace.
When the Emperor issued the decree to punish Imperial Consort Wan, a young eunuch in the palace hurriedly made use of his connections to send the news to the Mu Family.
Old Master Mu was furious, slamming his fist on the table, "Outrageous!"
The steward tried to calm him down, "Old Master, please don't get too worked up, you must take care of your health."
"Cough, cough, cough!" The anger surged in Old Master Mu’s chest, triggering a fit of violent coughing.
Old Master Mu’s health had not been robust in the past two years, unlike that old fox from the Han Family.
The steward quickly poured him some water, "Please, have some water and calm down."
Gritting his teeth, Old Master Mu said, "My daughter has been wrongly accused and sent to the cold palace, how am I supposed to calm down? Where is Mu Tao?"
The steward quickly responded, "This servant has already sent for him."
Old Master Mu pondered for a moment before instructing, "Send a message to the Su Family. Since Old Master Su is not in Shengdu these days, have Su Yuan come over!"
"Yes!"
The steward hurried off, not noticing Mu Chuan eavesdropping outside the window.
After hesitating for a moment, Mu Chuan also quickly disappeared into the dim sky.
Su Yuan arrived at the Mu Family’s residence at the same time as Mu Qingchen.
Following Su Yuan was Su Hao, while Mu Qingchen had been called from Tianqiong Academy by Mu Chuan.
It was still before dawn, and in order to have the city gates opened, Mu Chuan even used his father's official token.
"Fourth brother is here too." Su Hao greeted with a smile.
Mu Qingchen's expression remained indifferent.
Mu Chuan, clearly displeased, snapped, "Why did you come?"
He was nothing more than a concubine’s son, yet he had the audacity to show up at the Mu Family. If it weren’t for this concubine-born son, his aunt wouldn’t have been so angered back then!
Su Hao said apologetically, "Fourth brother wasn’t home, so he didn’t know. Father got injured practicing martial arts yesterday, and I was worried, so I insisted on coming along. It’s all my fault. Please, don’t blame Father."
Both of them looked at Su Yuan, and sure enough, his waist was wrapped in thick bandages.
"Let’s go in." Su Yuan said.
Inside the reception pavilion, Old Master Mu sat at the head of the room, his face ashen with anger. His eldest son, Mu Tao, stood respectfully at his side.
Su Yuan cupped his hands in salute to Old Master Mu, "Father-in-law."
Old Master Mu responded with a faint grunt.
He harbored resentment toward this son-in-law.
Old Master Mu had only two daughters, one married into the imperial palace, and the other married into the Su Family.
The marriage between the Mu and Su families was advantageous for the Su Family, as marrying the Mu Family’s daughter was reaching above their station. Yet, this Su Yuan was ungrateful, keeping a mistress outside, and the mistress even gave birth to a son a day before his legitimate wife.
The Su Family had three branches. The eldest and second young masters were from the second branch, while Su Hao and Mu Qingchen belonged to the main branch.
Su Yuan was the heir of the Su Family, and logically, as his legitimate son, Mu Qingchen would eventually inherit the Su Family. But then Su Hao came into the picture.
However, Su Yuan had been genuinely remorseful afterward. Over the years, Mu Qingchen had taken on his mother’s surname, Mu, and Su Yuan had tolerated it without complaint, treating Mu Qingchen very well.
Su Yuan had also clearly stated that only Mu Qingchen would inherit the position of head of the Su Family, with the condition that when the time came, Mu Qingchen would have to change his surname back.
Old Master Mu's gaze fell on the bandage around Su Yuan’s waist and abdomen. He asked, "Injured?"
Su Yuan replied, "I twisted myself while practicing martial arts. Just a minor injury, nothing serious."
"Sit." Old Master Mu said, and gestured to Mu Tao to sit as well.
Su Yuan and Mu Tao sat on either side of Old Master Mu.
Old Master Mu looked at Mu Qingchen, his gaze softening considerably, "Qingchen, you’ve lost some weight lately. Has life at the academy been too harsh?"
Mu Qingchen replied, "No, it's just the hot weather."
Old Master Mu had always doted on Mu Qingchen, but given the current circumstances, he wasn’t in the mood to indulge his grandchildren. Wearily, he waved his hand, "Everyone, take a seat."
He didn’t speak to Su Hao but looked directly towards the door, “Alright, you come in too.”
Mu Chuan, rubbing his nose, sheepishly walked in.
No matter how his personal relationship with Su Yuan was, Mu Qingchen still maintained the proper manners on the surface. He sat down beside Su Yuan.
Su Hao intended to sit on the other side of Mu Qingchen, but Mu Chuan came over and said, "I want to sit with my fourth brother!"
“Get over here!” Mu Tao barked harshly.
Yelled at by his father, Mu Chuan pouted resentfully and reluctantly went over to sit beside him.
Old Master Mu didn’t bother with pleasantries and got straight to the point, "I won’t waste time with formalities. I called you here before dawn because of the matter in the imperial palace. You must have all heard about what happened with Imperial Consort Wan."
Su Yuan nodded, “Steward Liu mentioned it on the way here. What’s going on? What does Imperial Concubine Li’s mistake have to do with Imperial Consort Wan?”
Mu Qingchen had heard the details from Mu Chuan, who explained the situation more thoroughly than the steward.
The steward had to carefully choose his words when speaking to Su Yuan, mindful of what could or couldn't be said, but Mu Chuan spilled everything like pouring beans.
He bluntly stated it was the work of the Han Family, and that their aunt had gotten a bit carried away. The Mu Family sent her so much money every year, not for her to recklessly squander it without thinking.
Just because Imperial Concubine Li’s father was sick, she gave her three thousand taels. Did she even know how hard it was to earn that much?
He had two aunts—one was an imperial consort, the other was his fourth brother’s mother.
“I always knew she would get into trouble sooner or later. If not for the protection of Imperial Consort Wang over the years, who knows how many times she would have been in trouble already.”
Those were Mu Chuan’s exact words.
Mu Chuan felt rather helpless regarding this younger aunt.
Old Master Mu then had Mu Tao recount the entire incident in detail, and from that, it was fairly clear that Imperial Consort Han was behind it.
Imperial Concubine Li had been bribed by Imperial Consort Han. Her father’s illness was just an excuse. The request for a large sum of silver from Imperial Consort Wan was a setup so that, when trouble struck, Imperial Consort Wan couldn’t escape blame.
The scandal between the head eunuch of the Office of the Imperial Hall and the young palace maid, which Imperial Concubine Li had uncovered, was also part of Imperial Consort Han's plan.
Imperial Consort Han had been in charge of the harem for many years, so how could she not know about the secret relationship between the Office of the Imperial Hall’s head eunuch and the palace maid? Yet she chose to turn a blind eye, allowing it to become a leverage she could exploit whenever she wanted.
Su Yuan said in a grave voice, "This is outrageous. If they want to eliminate the former Crown Princess, they should just do it. Why do they have to drag Imperial Consort Wan down with them? Is this an attempt to incite the Emperor's resentment against the Mu Family?"
The ties between the harem and the imperial court had always been intertwined, impossible to fully separate.
If something happened to Imperial Consort Wan, could the Mu Family escape unscathed?
Old Master Mu replied coldly, "Humph, the Han Family's greed is beyond the Mu Family's means. In my opinion, the Wang Family and the Su Family will eventually become their targets too!"
Old Master Mu’s younger sister had married into the Wang Family and was now the matriarch of the Wang Family.
There was a moment of silence in the room, the atmosphere feeling strange and tense.
Old Master Mu spoke again, “The Han Family’s ambition is no secret, but there is another key figure in this matter.”
Su Yuan quickly asked, “Who?”
Old Master Mu said, “Xiao Liulang.”

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
