At almost the same moment of Old Master Yang’s strike, a masked man dressed in white suddenly appeared, positioning himself in front of Gu Jiao, meeting Old Master Yang’s incoming palm strike with his own.

In that brief moment, Master Dong and Lord Du’s restraint reached its limit, and Gu Jiao forced the two of them back with a thrust of her spear.

She turned her head to look.

The man in white leaped toward her, wrapping his arm around her slender waist and lifting her into the air.

"It’s me." He whispered.

Gu Jiao glanced towards the stream, but Little Jing Kong and the Little County Princess were nowhere in sight.

"They’re ahead." He told her.

Gu Jiao didn’t resist further.

Just when Mu Qingchen thought Gu Jiao would obediently let him take her away, she suddenly turned around and threw a dagger backhand!

"Are you all alright… watch out!" Master Dong shouted.

The dagger was aimed at Old Master Yang and he dodged to the side, but Gu Jiao’s angle was tricky. Even though he avoided it, the person behind him couldn’t.

Lord Du took the hit and the dagger pierced him directly. The sheer force sent him flying through the air, crashing into a large tree behind him, then falling heavily to the ground.

Master Dong hurried over to help him, "Old Du!"

Gu Jiao’s move caught everyone off guard. Like Mu Qingchen, they had assumed that once Gu Jiao left, that would be it. Who would’ve thought she would strike again?

What kind of tenacious spirit was this!

There had been eleven of them when they first arrived, including six guards. Now, most of them had been wiped out. Old Third Fang was already dead, and both Old Du and Old Chen’s fates were uncertain. Master Dong had also suffered several minor injuries.

Master Dong said, "Old Master Yang, you really have deep skills. There’s not even a scratch on you."

Not even a scratch?

Old Master Yang stared in silence at the direction the youth and the masked man in white had gone, quietly clenching his right hand.

A drop of fresh blood slid from his sleeve.

......

Mu Qingchen brought Gu Jiao to the spot where he had arranged to meet with his bodyguard.

Gu Jiao immediately spotted the horse tied to a tree.

A round little head peeked out from behind the large tree.

"JiaoJiao?"

Only then did the vigilance in Gu Jiao’s eyes fully disappear.

Little Jing Kong trotted over.

Gu Jiao took his small hand and asked, “Were you scared?”

“No.” Little Jing Kong shook his head, glanced at Mu Qingchen, and said, “It’s Big Brother Qingchen.”

Little Jing Kong thought Gu Jiao didn’t recognize Mu Qingchen with his face covered with a cloth mask.

"Mm, I know." Gu Jiao patted his little head, then turned to Mu Qingchen and said, “Thank you.”

Mu Qingchen assumed Gu Jiao was referring to him saving her and replied indifferently, "You're welcome."

The bodyguard carrying the sleeping Little County Princess walked out from behind the tree.

Earlier, Mu Qingchen had first had the bodyguard take Little Jing Kong away, but he was almost attacked by Little Nine. Mu Qingchen had to reveal himself, and only after Little Jing Kong saw it was him did he lower his guard.

Gu Jiao sat against the large tree, and Little Jing Kong walked over to her, nestling into her arms.

Mu Qingchen carried the sleeping Little County Princess over and paused for a moment before sitting down on the other side of Little Jing Kong.

He gave the two of them a peculiar look and said, "You two... haven’t seen each other many times, have you? How are you so close?"

When watching the game at the polo field, Little Jing Kong had acted as if he was meeting Gu Jiao for the first time. But here, in this perilous forest, his dependence on Gu Jiao was much harder to conceal.

Gu Jiao remained calm and said, "Maybe because I’m naturally likable?"

Mu Qingchen: "..."

Mu Qingchen remembered how the Little County Princess had also decided that Gu Jiao would be her teacher after just one meeting, and he could only attribute it to Gu Jiao’s great affinity for children.

Leaning against the tree with Little Jing Kong in her arms, Gu Jiao asked, "Are you hungry?"

Little Jing Kong hesitated for a moment before honestly nodding, "Hungry."

Gu Jiao asked, "How long have you been hungry?"

Little Jing Kong thought for a moment and answered, "A day."

Gu Jiao had never let Jing Kong go without a meal at home, and neither had Xiao Heng.

She didn’t have any food with her, but she did have a few glucose tablets in her first aid kit.

Gu Jiao opened the small box and handed him a piece.

Little Jing Kong didn’t eat it right away. Instead, he held it up to Gu Jiao’s mouth, "Liulang, you eat."

"I’m not hungry." Gu Jiao said.

That was exactly what he had told Little Xue before, but he had actually been really hungry, so JiaoJiao must be starving too.

Little Jing Kong insisted on feeding Gu Jiao first. After Gu Jiao ate one, he happily took a piece and popped it into his own mouth.

Mu Qingchen inexplicably furrowed his brows a little. How come he didn’t offer for Brother Qingchen to eat too?

Jing Kong wasn’t going to do that.

There was only a small amount of candy. He would eat one piece, and the rest had to go to JiaoJiao.

"Go pick some fruit." Mu Qingchen instructed his bodyguard.

"Yes."

The bodyguard went off to gather fruits nearby.

Mu Qingchen spoke to Gu Jiao with a hint of distance, "This place is well hidden. No one will come here for now. Once you regain a bit of strength, we'll leave."

Gu Jiao didn’t pay much attention to his deliberate coldness, "Alright."

Mu Qingchen frowned slightly.

Little Nine fluttered down and perched on a tree branch above Gu Jiao’s head.

Mu Qingchen glanced up at Little Nine, paused for a moment, then asked, "This falcon... is it yours?"

Gu Jiao replied, "Sort of."

What does "sort of" mean?

Forget it, given their current relationship, asking about this seemed unnecessary.

Mu Qingchen wasn’t surprised that Gu Jiao had come out to search for people. Gu Jiao was the Little County Princess’s teacher, and since the Little County Princess had gone missing, it made sense that she would lend a hand.

What he didn’t understand was how she had ended up confronting those people.

Mu Qingchen removed the cloth from his face and voiced his confusion to Gu Jiao.

Little Jing Kong, sucking on his candy, lay comfortably in Gu Jiao’s arms, enjoying the warmth and closeness. At this moment, he felt incredibly happy, even swinging his little feet and humming a tune.

Gu Jiao glanced at him with amusement.

Mu Qingchen, thinking Gu Jiao hadn’t heard him, was about to ask again when Gu Jiao spoke, "They were trying to take the Little County Princess away, and I didn’t want to hand her over."

Mu Qingchen furrowed his brows, “You——”

Gu Jiao said calmly, “Yes, I want to take the credit. Who wouldn’t want such a big achievement?”

Hearing this, Mu Qingchen became furious, "So you really are that kind of person!"

The air thickened with a strong sense of tension.

Mu Qingchen turned his gaze away in frustration, not entirely sure what he was angry about, but it felt like there was a fire burning in his chest.

“That’s not what happened.” Little Jing Kong lifted his small head from Gu Jiao’s arms, speaking seriously. “They were bad people. They all wanted to take Little Xue, and none of them would let the others. They made Little Xue fall, and didn’t care if she was hurt. They just kept trying to snatch her.”

Mu Qingchen’s heart jolted. He looked at Gu Jiao and opened his mouth, “You…”

“Humph.” Gu Jiao turned her face away.

Mu Qingchen: “…”

Gu Jiao never bothered to explain herself when misunderstood and didn’t care what others thought of her. She never tried to defend herself.

But Little Jing Kong cared.

JiaoJiao was the best JiaoJiao in the world, and he didn’t want anyone to misunderstand her.

Little Jing Kong said to Mu Qingchen, “Big Brother Qingchen, they started it. They wanted to hurt Liulang, and they even tried to capture me and Little Xue. If they took us, they definitely wouldn’t give us anything to eat.”

Mu Qingchen had genuine intentions for finding the Little County Princess, wanting to return her safely. He assumed that the others felt the same.

But after hearing Little Jing Kong’s description, it was clear that wasn’t the case at all.

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
