At noon, Gu Jiao stayed to have lunch with Duke An.
Duke An had a good appetite. Aside from sipping on some light porridge as he usually did, he also ate a few bites of the dishes that Gu Jiao picked for him.
Gu Jiao offered him the dishes as a way to test his chewing ability. He chewed with some difficulty, and if Gu Jiao hadn’t placed the food on his plate, he wouldn’t have bothered to eat it on his own.
“From now on, you need to eat like this for every meal.” Gu Jiao said.
He couldn’t just rely on congee; exercising his oral muscles was necessary.
“My elder brother would never—” Second Master Jing was interrupted when he noticed the Lord Duke tracing the word “okay” with his fingertip on the armrest.
Second Master Jing: “…”
After the meal, Duke An instructed someone to take Gu Jiao to visit the small courtyard's armory.
The armory contained a wide array of weapons, with everything one could imagine. Some of them belonged to his wife, Xuanyuan Zi, while others were gifts from Xuanyuan Li, meant for Jing Yinyin.
Every time Duke An received weapons from his father-in-law, he couldn’t help but be between laughter and tears. Yinyin was a little girl, so why give her these swords and spears?
“You don’t understand. This child takes after me. She’ll surely become a great general in the future!”
“But Yinyin is only one year old. Even if you want to train her, shouldn’t you wait until she’s older? Ah Zi didn’t start learning martial arts until she was four.”
Xuanyuan Zi, Duke An’s wife, was Xuanyuan Li’s biological daughter.
At such moments, Xuanyuan Li would always cradle the bewildered little Yinyin in his arms, as if afraid someone might take her away, and retort, “How can Ah Zi compare to Yinyin? Yinyin takes after her grandpa the most! Yinyin must learn martial arts!”
Every now and then, Xuanyuan Li would sneak in to take the child away.
Whenever Duke An woke up and found Yinyin missing from her bed, it was almost certain that Xuanyuan Li had snuck in during the night and carried her off.
“Elder brother! Elder brother!”
Second Master Jing waved his hand in front of Duke An’s face.
Duke An snapped out of his thoughts and glanced sheepishly at Gu Jiao. She happened to be looking at him too, her face full of curiosity.
A trace of apology flickered in his gaze as he dipped his finger in water and wrote on the armrest: ‘Just remembered something from the past.’
Second Master Jing said, “Xiao Liulang wants to ask if he can pick freely from these weapons or if there are any restrictions.”
Duke An wrote confidently: ‘Take them all.’
Second Master Jing felt aggrieved.
He had been eyeing his sister-in-law’s bow for many years, but his elder brother had never once offered to give it to him.
Gu Jiao took the weapons out into the courtyard, testing each one for its balance and feel.
Duke An sat in his wheelchair under the veranda, his gaze fixed on her without wavering. He looked exactly like a parent watching their child play with toys, his eyes brimming with a quiet, indulgent smile.
Second Master Jing leaned closer, glancing at Gu Jiao, who was drawing a bow and nocking an arrow in the courtyard. In a hushed voice, he said, “Elder brother, the selection he’s going for is dangerous. Shouldn’t you try to persuade her against it? It’s rare for you to meet someone who feels like family. If something goes wrong, you’ll be left all alone again.”
Second Master Jing wasn’t foolish. He could see the way his elder brother looked at Xiao Liulang—it was the same way one would look at their own child. His elder brother truly wished he could take on the role of a father.
The pain of losing a child was something one only needed to experience once in a lifetime.
From the moment the Imperial Advisor came to find him, Duke An had already understood what she was about to face and the burdens she would bear in the future.
He liked this child very much and naturally hoped she could stay by his side forever.
But he couldn’t allow his own peace of mind to come at the cost of clipping her wings.
If she wanted to soar, he would lift her up, holding her high above his head, and let her fly toward a broader, more boundless sky.
He would be filled with worry and fear, but he would never hold her back.
Gu Jiao stayed in the courtyard until evening before returning home. She chose a bow—precisely the one Second Master Jing had coveted for years.
On the way to escort her back to the Imperial Advisor’s Hall, Second Master Jing looked at her like a resentful wife the entire journey.
……
These days, Gu Jiao had become a regular presence at the Imperial Advisor’s Hall; she could enter with just a glance. She held onto Black Wind King’s reins as they made their way to the Qilin Hall.
Halfway there, Yu He seemed to have been specifically looking for her. When he saw her, his eyes lit up. “Young Master Xiao!”
He strode toward Gu Jiao with long, purposeful steps.
When he got closer, Yu He suddenly remembered the indescribable scene he had witnessed in Qilin Hall the other day. A trace of awkwardness surfaced in his heart, and he forced a stiff smile, saying, “Young Master Xiao… you’re back…”
Gu Jiao, on the other hand, was entirely at ease, making Yu He seem like the one caught doing something wrong.
“Did you need something from me?” Gu Jiao asked.
Yu He braced himself and got to the point. “Ah, it’s about my master. He said your horse is still in the recovery phase, so you need to be extra careful with its feeding. He had some special feed prepared and wanted to ask if you’d like to check it out.”
Gu Jiao didn’t have much experience raising horses, so consulting the Imperial Advisor was the sensible thing to do.
Yu He led Gu Jiao toward the purple bamboo grove.
Currently, Yu He couldn’t look Gu Jiao in the eye without recalling the sight of her and Xiao Heng in that room. How could someone as elegant and otherworldly as the Eldest Imperial Grandson possibly like men?
Cough, cough.
He shook off the thought.
Perhaps trying to break the awkward silence, Yu He made small talk. “I see Young Master Xiao is quite good at taking care of horses. Little Eleven seems to be doing well under your care.”
Although the horse king had only been there for a day, Yu He already knew its name was Little Eleven.
Yu He asked, “What do you usually feed it?”
Gu Jiao replied, “Oh, just… whatever?”
Yu He gave a strained smile. “Like what?”
Gu Jiao thought for a moment. “Grass? And sometimes carrots.”
Yu He’s mouth twitched. Are you sure you’re raising a horse and not a donkey?
Yu He kept trying to make conversation. “By the way, I heard from my senior brother that you’ve advanced to the next round. Congratulations.”
Gu Jiao: “Mm.”
The conversation promptly died.
Unable to find another topic, Yu He awkwardly led Gu Jiao to the small courtyard of the Imperial Advisor.
The Imperial Advisor had gone to pick some purple bamboo. Yu He had Gu Jiao sit in the main hall while the Black Wind King wandered around the grove.
Yu He then brought out the unique fine wine from the Imperial Advisor's Hall to entertain Gu Jiao.
Gu Jiao took a sip and commented, "It’s so sweet."
Yu He smiled and said, "This is the osmanthus wine brewed by my master himself. He only makes one barrel a year, and it’s something most people can’t even get a taste of."
By the time he finished speaking, Gu Jiao had already emptied her cup. She froze for a moment and asked, “This is wine?”
Yu He nodded. “Yes, but it’s not bitter at all, right? My master’s wine is always—”
Thud!
Gu Jiao’s head hit the table, and she passed out drunk!
Yu He: “…”
“Young Master Xiao! Young Master Xiao! Young Master Xiao!”
Yu He called out for a while, but Gu Jiao showed no response. He was completely stunned. "What’s with this tolerance? You have such great martial arts skills, shouldn’t you be able to drink a thousand cups without getting drunk, or a million cups without falling over? How did one cup knock you out? This is bad... When Master returns, how am I going to explain this?"

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
