Gu Jiao’s match this time, following Taoist Qingfeng's, was yet another moment that left everyone completely dumbfounded.
What on earth just happened?
How did Han Shaoyu end up being flung away?
“Did you see what happened?” Cavalryman A asked Cavalryman B.
“I didn’t. Did you?” Cavalryman B turned to Cavalryman C.
Cavalryman C shook his head, “Neither did I!”
On a high platform at the back of the crowd, Han Lei and Fifth Master Han silently watched as "Xiao Liulang" rode his horse to the edge of the battlefield.
Fifth Master Han said, "Elder brother, no wonder Ye’er has been defeated by this kid multiple times. He does seem to have some skills."
Han Lei’s expression was grave, "What just happened with Han Shaoyu? I clearly didn’t sense any fluctuation of internal force from that kid. How did Han Shaoyu end up being struck and sent flying? What style or martial school was that move from?"
Fifth Master Han’s silver hair shimmered under the scorching sun, and his expression was as cold as his hair color.
His gaze fell on the youth riding leisurely on horseback.
Among the many noble young masters on the battlefield, his appearance was unremarkable, yet he stood out in the crowd, drawing all eyes to him.
“It’s not martial arts; it’s just a minor trick.” He said.
Han Lei frowned, confused. “A minor trick?”
Fifth Master Han replied, “Elder brother, do you still remember the trebuchet?”
Han Lei clasped his hands behind his back and nodded. “I remember. It’s one of the siege weapons, highly destructive, capable of breaching gates and walls, and even used to strike defending soldiers. Are you saying he just——”
Fifth Master Han hummed in agreement. “Exactly, he treated Han Shaoyu like a stone and launched him. The principle is simple, but in close combat, few can create the precise conditions and timing for such a maneuver. From the moment he stepped onto the field, he was calculating the attack’s range, the height of the leap, the angle of the bend, and even… the speed of Han Shaoyu’s spear thrust. All of it was mapped out clearly in his mind.”
Han Lei said, “I still don’t quite understand.”
Fifth Master Han responded, “There’s no need to understand, elder brother. You only need to know that this youth is a genius.”
Han Lei turned to look at Fifth Master Han and gave a faint, enigmatic smile. “You’re actually praising someone?”
Fifth Master Han continued, “But even geniuses need a bit of luck. Without that armor, he would’ve been dead under Han Shaoyu’s spear.”
Han Lei’s gaze returned to the youth. Dressed in red battle robes and black armor, astride a spirited horse, his commanding presence outshone all the aristocratic young masters.
Han Lei frowned deeply. “I noticed it too. What kind of armor is that? How can it be so impenetrable?”
Fifth Master Han asked, “Elder brother, do you still remember Xuanyuan Li’s armor? I’m referring to his most formidable set.”
Han Lei, reminded of a certain memory, furrowed his brows slightly before replying, “I remember. Back then, he relied on that armor to infiltrate the enemy camp in the State of JIn alone and rescue His Majesty the Emperor, who had been captured. But after his defeat and death, we couldn’t find that armor. What he was wearing at the time was just ordinary gear. You don’t think Xiao Liulang’s armor is Xuanyuan Li’s old set, do you? It doesn’t look the same.”
Fifth Master Han said, “Perhaps it’s made from the same material, or maybe Xuanyuan Li’s armor was melted down and reforged into this one.”
Han Lei sighed. “Fifteen years ago, if Xuanyuan Li hadn’t taken off that armor, he might not have died so soon.”
Fifth Master Han replied calmly, “One man’s life or death couldn’t change the larger outcome. The fall of the Xuanyuan Family was destined.”
Han Lei did not refute this. “True. With the prophecy of the Purple Star appearing, and the Emperor rising from the Xuanyuans, how could the Xuanyuan Family have survived? A pity about that armor, though, it never ended up in the hands of our Han Family. Anyway, let’s not stray too far off topic. Let’s talk about this selection. Xiao Liulang is a tough opponent. You avoided him in the first round, but that might not be the case in the next.”
Gu Jiao had already ridden to the spectators’ area. The Black Wind King’s imposing presence created a natural barrier, leaving a comfortable open space around her.
Fifth Master Han watched Gu Jiao and said, “He’s not my match.”
Han Lei turned and smiled as he patted Fifth Master Han’s shoulder. “Don’t underestimate him, fifth brother.”
Fifth Master Han fixed his gaze on Gu Jiao and replied solemnly, “Rest assured, elder brother. I won’t underestimate him. If I face Xiao Liulang, even knowing he’s no match for me, I will still give it my all.”
Following Gu Jiao’s match was Mu Qingchen’s.
Mu Qingchen’s opponent was Wang Xu’s younger brother, Wang Yi. By seniority, he had to address Wang Yi as uncle.
Wang Yi laughed and said, “Don’t hold back just because I’m your elder!”
Mu Qingchen, holding his longsword, cupped his hands respectfully. “This junior will do his best. Please guide me, Fourth Uncle Wang.”
Wang Yi’s smile faded as he drew the curved blade from his waist and said with an air of authority, “Then let me see how much your martial skills have improved over the years!”
The sound of the gong rang out, and the two riders charged toward each other.
Mu Qingchen’s weapon was a longsword, while Wang Yi wielded curved blades.
It was often said that swords countered blades, and blades countered spears, but in reality, that wasn’t always the case.
Each weapon had its own advantages and disadvantages in battle, and it all depended on how one wielded it.
Wang Yi’s blade techniques were domineering, relying on overwhelming power to suppress opponents instantly, while Mu Qingchen’s swordsmanship emphasized speed, agility, and precision.
When Mu Qingchen’s sword slashed downward, Wang Yi’s curved blade easily blocked it.
However, if Wang Yi were the one to strike down with his blade, Mu Qingchen might not be able to withstand the force if he met it head-on.
To avoid taking Wang Yi’s attack head-on, Mu Qingchen launched his own offensive the moment the match began, avoiding any heavy, forceful strikes like slashes or chops. Instead, he used quick, sharp thrusts, slashes, and jabs—moves designed to catch the opponent off guard from awkward angles.
Wang Yi felt dazzled, his immense strength unable to find a target.
In the end, Mu Qingchen stepped on the stirrup and leaped into the air, executing a flip that sliced through the leather of Wang Yi’s saddle.
Mu Qingchen then sent a sword qi toward the horse’s hindquarters, causing the startled horse to rear up and bolt forward, throwing Wang Yi off balance.
Suddenly, Wang Yi was sent tumbling off the horse, slipping off the saddle without warning.
The very next moment, just as Wang Yi was struggling to regain his footing, Mu Qingchen landed back on his horse and reached out to grab Wang Yi’s arm, “Fourth Uncle Wang!”
Wang Yi steadied himself, shaking his head in both exasperation and amusement as he looked at Mu Qingchen. He patted his horse and, out of breath, said, “I lost! And I accept my defeat wholeheartedly!”
Mu Qingchen dismounted, sheathed his sword, and bowed respectfully as a younger generation would. “It was Fourth Uncle Wang who showed mercy.”
Wang Yi waved his hand dismissively. “Alright, alright. Honestly, I didn’t even want to participate. But now that you’ve won, don’t lose to anyone else! Prove to me that my defeat wasn’t in vain!”
Mu Qingchen’s expression grew complicated as he responded firmly, “Yes!”
There were still three more matches to be held, but one of the cavalrymen from the Seventh Heavenly Stem Geng group had encountered some trouble and couldn’t make it to the venue in time.
Normally, such situations would result in a forfeit, but Fifth Master Han, showing generosity, offered to wait for the opponent.
And so, they waited.

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
