Jun Xiuhan's destination was the second beacon camp.

Gu Jiao spread out the map, where Xiao Heng's annotations were remarkably clear and easy to understand at a glance.

Pointing to a cinnabar-marked route, Gu Jiao said, “Under normal circumstances, Jun Xiuhan would take this road. It's relatively flat and wide. By now, he should have reached this birch forest. There is, however, a small path that bypasses it, though it requires crossing a river.”

Gu Changqing glanced at the sky and remarked, “It hasn’t rained in the past few days. The river shouldn’t be too turbulent; it should be passable.”

The two took the detour into the birch forest and successfully intercepted Jun Xiuhan on his way forward.

As usual, Gu Changqing stepped forward to confront him.

Blocking Jun Xiuhan’s path, Gu Changqing said coldly, “Hand over your bamboo tube.”

Jun Xiuhan was a tall and slender young man, exuding the scholarly elegance of a literati. If not for having witnessed him in combat, one might never associate him with being a martial expert at first glance.

However, both Gu Changqing and Gu Jiao understood that anyone who had made it this far could not have relied on mere luck.

Jun Xiuhan looked at Gu Changqing standing before him, his expression showing little surprise. He glanced at a nearby large tree and asked, “Is it you who wants it, or that person?”

Gu Jiao raised an eyebrow.

Oh? He had noticed?

Jun Xiuhan was more perceptive than she had expected.

Gu Changqing’s tone remained indifferent, “What this or that person? Enough nonsense—hand it over!”

“I won’t give you the bamboo tube.” Jun Xiuhan replied, his gaze cool as it shifted toward Gu Jiao’s direction. “If you want it, come and take it yourself.”

Was he provoking her?

From behind the tree, Gu Jiao cast a glance at Jun Xiuhan. There was something about him that made her feel as though all her disguises had been completely seen through.

Since that was the case, there was no need to hide any longer.

Gu Jiao rode out from behind the tree on the Black Wind King, her posture confident and imposing. She stopped beside Gu Changqing.

Her gaze landed on Jun Xiuhan’s young and handsome face, “I’ll take it myself.”

In the military camp, she had observed Jun Xiuhan, and she believed he had observed her as well. However, this was their first actual encounter.

When Jun Xiuhan saw her standing together with the "Han Family people," there wasn’t the slightest trace of surprise in his eyes.

So, he had already known she was allied with “Han Zeyu”?

How had he figured it out?

“I’ll fight you.” Gu Jiao said.

“I won’t fight you.” Jun Xiuhan replied.

“Hm?” Gu Jiao tilted her head, looking at him curiously.

Jun Xiuhan untied the bamboo tube from his waist and casually tossed it to Gu Jiao.

Gu Jiao: “???”

She caught the bamboo tube, opened it, and examined the note inside. It was indeed the secret letter—Jun Xiuhan hadn’t tried to deceive her with a fake.

Gu Jiao was utterly baffled.

Even Gu Changqing was deeply puzzled. They had been prepared for a fierce battle to the death with Jun Xiuhan, and yet... this was it?

Seemingly noticing Gu Jiao’s confusion, Jun Xiuhan said indifferently, “I owe someone a favor. Consider it repaid through you.”

“Who do you owe a favor to that you’re repaying me?” Gu Jiao asked.

Jun Xiuhan, however, did not answer.

He tugged at his reins, turning his horse around to head back the way he had come.

But after only a few steps, he suddenly pulled the reins tightly. “There’s killing intent!”

In the next instant, sharp whistling sounds of projectiles breaking through the air came from the other side of the forest.

Jun Xiuhan dodged to the side, narrowly avoiding an attack.

Gu Changqing drew his longsword, deflecting the hidden weapons aimed at both himself and Gu Jiao.

Gu Jiao glanced at the darts embedded in the tree trunk and said calmly, “Tang Sect. Qi Xuan.”

“Hahaha! That’s right, it’s me!”

Accompanied by a burst of arrogant laughter, Qi Xuan led over a dozen men clad in black, descending from the treetops.

The black-clad figures surrounded the three of them in a tight circle.

To avoid making too much noise and alerting the examiners, they didn’t ride horses but instead used their qinggong skills to infiltrate the forest.

Jun Xiuhan’s horse was forced to retreat a few steps, ending up alongside Gu Changqing and Gu Jiao.

“We meet again.” Qi Xuan said with a smile to Gu Jiao. His gaze then shifted to Gu Changqing’s face, “It’s you?”

Gu Changqing rode a Black Wind Cavalry horse. Among the horses entering the forest today, only three belonged to the Black Wind Cavalry: the new Black Wind King of Fifth Master Han, Gu Jiao’s old Black Wind King, and the mount of “Han Zeyu.”

Qi Xuan let out a cold laugh, “It seems the Crown Prince misjudged this time, allowing a spy to infiltrate his residence. Unfortunately for you, your luck ran out, you ran into me! Today, I’ll settle the score with you for cutting Han Ye’s tendons!”

Gu Jiao raised an eyebrow and said, “Oh? Your leg’s healed?”

At the mention of this, Qi Xuan’s face darkened. Back in the forest, Gu Jiao had said they would count to three before fighting, but as soon as she uttered “one,” she had stabbed Qi Xuan’s thigh with a spear!

As if that wasn’t enough, she twisted the spear, nearly causing Qi Xuan to faint from the pain!

Qi Xuan threatened coldly, “Xiao Liulang, don’t get too cocky. However many times you stabbed me, I’ll return it to you tenfold today!”

Jun Xiuhan, expressionless, said, “This is your business. I’m leaving.”

Qi Xuan snorted. “You’re out of luck. No one can be allowed to know about today’s events."

The implication was clear——he intended to kill Jun Xiuhan to silence him.

Jun Xiuhan’s identity was easy to guess. Among the six participants, he was the least familiar face. It didn’t take much to figure out he was the impoverished scholar from Canaan Academy.

Qi Xuan didn’t consider such small fry worth his attention.

Gu Changqing rode forward, positioning himself between Gu Jiao and Qi Xuan, blocking Qi Xuan’s view. He said to Gu Jiao, “You go first. I’ll settle things with him.”

Without hesitation, Gu Jiao charged through the encirclement on the Black Wind King.

Qi Xuan sneered. “Trying to run? After her!”

Two black-clad men leaped into the air, swords raised to strike at Gu Jiao from behind.

Gu Changqing turned and unleashed a powerful slash of sword qi, cutting both men down in midair.

……

Elsewhere, the battle between Taoist Qingfeng and Fifth Master Han had entered an intense phase.

Fifth Master Han was gradually finding it difficult to cope. Although he hadn’t fallen into a disadvantage yet, his internal force was quickly depleting.

Reluctant as he was to admit it, Taoist Qingfeng’s martial arts were indeed superior. While Taoist Qingfeng only used fifty percent of his strength in each move, Fifth Master Han had to exert seventy percent just to keep up.

Naturally, this made him tire more quickly.

After exchanging another punch, the two retreated to catch their breath.

Fifth Master Han’s once-smooth silver hair now stood on end like a brush. Panting heavily, he said, “Aren’t you supposed to be a Taoist! Can’t you fight me honorably instead of resorting to such despicable tactics as stealing my secret letter?”

Taoist Qingfeng replied with a peculiar expression, “Steal your secret letter? I didn’t.”

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
