At that time, the late Emperor had just passed away, and the current Emperor decreed that she and Xiao Ji must marry during the mourning period.
The entire Princess Mansion was so busy that everyone’s feet barely touched the ground. Moreover, Long Yi had never once gone looking for that object, so Princess Xinyang quickly put the matter of the jade thumb ring out of her mind.
Twenty years had passed. If she hadn’t stumbled upon it while organizing her things, she might never have remembered it.
Princess Xinyang sighed. “How could I have forgotten it so completely?”
Yu Jin consoled her, “Back then, princess wasn’t even sure if it really belonged to Long Yi. All five Dragon Shadow Guards had been in your room, and afterward, a jade thumb ring appeared on the carpet. How could anyone tell whose it was?”
The only reason they knew now was that Princess Xinyang had gathered all five of them. The other four had no reaction to the jade ring, only Long Yi kept staring at it.
At this moment, Long Yi was sitting cross-legged under the corridor.
The weather was unbearably hot, and since Princess Xinyang noticed that he liked sitting there, she laid out a cooling mat for him.
And sit he did, all day long.
When Long Yi first arrived at the Princess Mansion, Princess Xinyang couldn’t distinguish him from the Dragon Shadow Guards.
Looking back now, aside from her limited understanding of the Dragon Shadow Guards, another key reason was that Long Yi truly was a death warrior.
As for why he ended up in the Princess Mansion, it was likely because he had lost his memory. When he saw others who shared his aura, he assumed he was one of them.
He saw their duty was to protect her, so he believed that was his mission as well.
Perhaps it was time for Long Yi to rediscover his true identity and fulfill his real purpose.
……
Gu Jiao slept for two full hours, and when she woke up, Liao Chen was already gone.
She slowly sat up, rubbed her sore neck, and said to the Black Wind King, “It’s so late already? Sorry for making you carry me for so long.”
She dismounted, stretched her limbs, and then led the Black Wind King to a nearby well. Borrowing a wooden bucket from a villager, she drew a full pail of water and washed the blood off herself.
By the time she returned to the Duke Estate, her damp clothes had already dried.
No one could tell she had coughed up blood or been injured.
She walked inside as if nothing had happened.
Little Jing Kong had come over today, and the Maple Courtyard was filled with the sounds of him bickering with Gu Yan.
Under the corridor, Duke An sat in his wheelchair playing chess with Old Chief, while Grandaunt lounged in a rattan chair beside them, happily munching on candied fruit.
In the courtyard, Gu Xiaoshun was learning new mechanical techniques from Master Lu, Lady Nan remained immersed in her poison-making, and Gu Chengfeng had been dragged into acting as a referee for Little Jing Kong and Gu Yan, his head aching from their endless chatter.
Gu Jiao stood at the courtyard entrance, taking in this warm and lively scene.
Everyone seemed to be doing their own thing, yet in reality, they were all waiting for her.
They just wouldn’t say it out loud.
Each of them had their own way of protecting her.
The pain and exhaustion that filled Gu Jiao’s body seemed to vanish completely in that very instant.
Leading Black Wind King by the reins, she strode into the courtyard with her usual steady and confident gait.
……
Han Family.
Mu Ruxin had finalized a treatment plan for Han shizi.
Old Master Han, Han Lei, and Third Master Han were all in Han shizi’s room, waiting for Mu Ruxin’s diagnosis.
Mu Ruxin said, “Shizi’s Achilles tendon was severed. If he wants to recover, it must be reconnected. However, he has already missed the best window for surgery. The wound has healed on the surface, but the key structures did not reattach properly. My proposed treatment may sound extremely risky, but it is the most effective option.”
“What is it?” Han Lei asked.
Mu Ruxin glanced at Han shizi, who lay on the bed with his sharp, handsome features, then turned to the three men and said, “We need to sever his Achilles tendon again. I’ll operate and reconnect it properly.”
Third Master Han was incredulous. “What? Again? Are you saving him or killing him? You’re not some spy sent by the Duke An Estate, are you?”
Old Master Han stared at Mu Ruxin with a dark expression.
Mu Ruxin hurriedly explained, “Third Master, you misunderstand. How could I be Duke An’s spy? I’ve long severed ties with him. As I said earlier, I came here to secure a prosperous future for myself. You grant me the status of an upper state citizen, and in return, I will cure Han shizi. Once the deal is done, we will owe each other nothing.”
Old Master Han said solemnly, “I have never heard of such a treatment method before. Young Miss Mu, are you truly confident in its success?”
Mu Ruxin replied arrogantly, “To my master, Divine Physician Luo, this surgery is as trivial as treating a cold. I may not be as skilled as him, but I have assisted him in similar procedures before.”
Han Lei hesitated. “Father, I still think this is too risky.”
“Grandfather.”
After a long silence, Han shizi finally spoke from the bed, “I’m willing to try.”
Han Lei frowned, “Ye’er, if this fails, your injury will be beyond saving. I’ve been looking for a way to petition His Majesty to order the Imperial Advisor’s Hall to treat you.”
Han Ye shook his head, “Father, you know they won’t treat me. Besides, with both the Crown Prince and the Imperial Noble Consort angering His Majesty, he has no interest in the Han Family right now. Let’s proceed with what Divine Physician Mu suggested. When can the surgery be done?”
Mu Ruxin answered, “We can do it now. Oh, that reminds me of something.”
Everyone looked at her.
She smiled. “I was living comfortably at Duke An Estate, but suddenly, Lord Duke dismissed me under the excuse that I was homesick. Coincidentally, on the same day, I saw Xiao Liulang move into the Duke Estate. I wonder if there’s a connection?”
Han Lei pondered. “Xiao Liulang is his adopted son. It’s not unusual for him to move in.”
Mu Ruxin gave a faint smile. “But why did he need to send me away? That’s the real question, isn’t it?”
Han Lei asked, “Did Xiao Liulang move in alone?”
Mu Ruxin sighed. “I don’t know. There were two more carriages behind him, but I didn’t see what was inside.”
Han Lei leaned in and whispered to Old Master Han, “Father, could Xiao Liulang’s family be hiding in the Duke An Estate? No wonder our men couldn’t find them anywhere!”
Old Master Han lowered his voice. “Let’s not rush this. We’ll send someone to investigate later. Right now, Ye’er’s injury is the priority.”
With that, he clasped his hands atop his cane and looked at Mu Ruxin, “Then I’ll trouble Young Miss Mu to perform the surgery on my grandson. But let me be clear, if anything happens to him, you’ll pay for it with your life.”
……
Deep into the night.
After sending off the last chatterbox, Gu Jiao could finally enjoy her bed.
She flopped onto the soft mattress, staring at the pearl-embroidered canopy above her.
The wound from An Hun’s attack throbbed faintly.
She pressed a hand against her shoulder while resting the other behind her head, “So heavy-handed… One day, I’ll throw you into a sack.”
In the end, exhaustion overtook her. Before long, she drifted into a deep sleep.
It had been a long time since she had a prophetic dream.
She used to wonder if those dreams were glimpses of real past events, and perhaps, ever since she arrived in the State of Yan, she had unwittingly altered the fates of everyone around her.
Maybe that was why she no longer had those dreams.
But tonight, she dreamed again.
Only this time, it was different from all the others—this time, for the first time, she saw the ending of her own story.

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
