Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)
They had five strands of snow silkworm thread in total, one for every two people, and with a scout included, they formed a team of eleven.
This was a suicide squad.
Because the mission was too dangerous; anyone who went might never come back.
“I’ll go!” Cheng Fugui stood up without hesitation.
Gu Jiao glanced at his arm, still slung in a bandage. “None of you are going tonight. Zhou Ren, Zhang Shiyong, go fetch Wenren Chong, Zhao Dengfeng, and Li Shen.”
After that, Gu Jiao handpicked a few more cavalry soldiers known for their agility and untouched by injury in battle.
“I’m going too.”
As Gu Jiao stepped out of the command tent, she ran into Mu Qingchen walking toward her.
Gu Jiao’s eyes flicked past Mu Qingchen to Advisor Hu, who was trailing behind him.
Advisor Hu rubbed his nose sheepishly and stammered, “H-H-Her Highness the Crown Princess has issued an order, Young Master Mu is to stay by your side and protect your safety.”
It was a bluff.
In truth, he was simply worried about his own superior, so he secretly summoned Mu Qingchen.
And if anyone was to act as a human shield, Mu Qingchen, with his martial prowess, was undoubtedly the most reliable option.
“Alright.” Gu Jiao didn’t object.
But before they set out, Gu Jiao summoned one more person.
With her hands clasped behind her back, she looked calmly at the man on the sickbed. “Looks like you’ve recovered well enough. Time to stretch your legs.”
Chang Wei turned his back to her and growled, “I won’t work for you!”
Gu Jiao raised her palms in mock helplessness. “You don’t have to. But I can’t possibly feed all these captured rebel soldiers for free. Grain and provisions are scarce, you know. Maybe I’ll kill a hundred or so each day, would be more economical for my cavalry.”
Chang Wei glared at her icily. “Despicable!”
Gu Jiao gave a faint smile. “You know the terrain around Yanmen Pass better than anyone. Lead us. If you don’t, I’ll bury your men alive right now.”
Chang Wei understood all too well. This person wasn’t a soft-hearted youth but a cold-blooded killer.
Appealing to conscience or reputation meant absolutely nothing.
In the end, he gritted his teeth, swallowed his pain, and accepted Gu Jiao’s coercion with silent fury.
“I want my own horse.”
“Give it to him.” Gu Jiao instructed.
Zhou Ren ordered his men to bring over Chang Wei’s warhorse.
As Gu Jiao watched him vault effortlessly into the saddle with a freshly operated body, her eyes narrowed slightly.
Still moving like a tiger even after surgery, truly worthy of the name Chang Wei.(Mighty General)
To minimize noise from clanking armor and improve stealth, everyone changed into black night attire.
The group mounted their horses and rode out of Quyang City, galloping west toward Yanmen Pass.
According to their scouts, the State of Liang’s army would camp tonight in the valley just outside the pass. They couldn’t let their horses get too close, or the sound of hooves would travel into the enemy camp.
“We can’t take the horses any further.” Chang Wei said, pulling tightly on the reins as they reached the foot of a mountain.
Everyone dismounted.
Chang Wei tethered his horse to a large tree and turned to see the rest of them still standing around.
With a baffled expression, he said, “Tie your horses up, or they’ll run. Seriously, are you even real cavalry?”
Gu Jiao gave a casual “Oh” and replied earnestly, “But the Black Wind Cavalry horses doesn’t need tying.”
They were especially disciplined, they never strayed.
Chang Wei: “…”
Why did he suddenly feel… oddly embarrassed?
That line wasn’t even the deadliest one.
Gu Jiao spread her hands and said casually, “Actually, even if you don’t tie your horse, the Black Wind King will keep an eye on it. He won’t let it run off.”
When your own horse still needed to be tied up to prevent it from wandering off, someone else’s horse not only knew how to restrain itself, but could also keep others, or well, other horses in check…
Chang Wei felt a jolt deep in his soul. He no longer wanted to speak to this brat!
Chang Wei strode forward with a dark expression on his face.
Gu Jiao followed him confidently and energetically.
Mu Qingchen stayed alert to the movements around them as he too stepped forward.
Chang Wei gave a cold snort and said, “Kid, aren’t you afraid I’ll set you up?”
Gu Jiao replied with a breezy calmness, “If I don’t make it back, those tens of thousands of prisoners in Quyang City will all be buried with me. You go ahead and do the math on that.”
Chang Wei gritted his teeth. “Such a young age, and yet so vicious and ruthless!”
Gu Jiao smiled faintly. “Thank you for the compliment.”
Chang Wei nearly choked on the breath he was holding.
Military generals often have hot tempers. It was actually a double-edged sword. On the battlefield, it fueled their fighting spirit and boosted their power, but once off the battlefield, it made them prone to irritability.
Chang Wei was seriously injured, and for the sake of his own life and well-being, he decided not to speak with the brat anymore.
After bypassing a hill, the group arrived at a narrow stream. Just ahead was the mountain valley marking the border between the two states, and it was here that the main army of the State of Liang had set up camp.
They had clearly only just arrived and were still working through the night to organize everything.
“Wait until they’re asleep, then we move.” Chang Wei said.
“Mm.” Gu Jiao responded.
Only then did Chang Wei realize he had used the tone of a commanding officer again. Strangely, this cold-blooded little devil didn’t seem to mind taking orders from a prisoner, showing no sign of offense or resistance.
The group crouched low in the grass behind a large rock.
The ninth lunar month had already brought deep autumn, and the night winds at the border carried a biting chill that made fingers and toes go numb. The ground beneath them was just as cold.
Mu Qingchen instinctively brushed against the back of Gu Jiao’s hand and whispered, “Why are you so cold?”
“Cold?” Gu Jiao didn’t feel it at all.
Mu Qingchen wanted to take off his outer robe and give it to her, but unfortunately, all he had on was his black night outfit.
“They’re asleep!” Gu Jiao suddenly said.
Following the sound of her voice, Mu Qingchen looked over and saw that the last squad of busy soldiers from the State of Liang had entered their tents. Only about a hundred soldiers were left patrolling in staggered shifts across various points.
They observed for a while and gradually figured out the patrol pattern. Choosing a moment when the guards were off-sync, the group quietly slipped into the State of Liang’s military encampment.
Their weaponry was stored at the rear supply depot of the camp, and the provisions were kept there too.
It was a moonless night with a strong wind, perfect conditions for setting fire to the supplies. Too bad that wasn’t an option.
Gu Jiao made a hand signal to the ten others, and Mu Qingchen and the rest immediately understood. One by one, they took out a pair of silver-threaded gloves from inside their robes and slipped them on.
When he saw that this group of people had confiscated all his gloves, the corner of Chang Wei’s mouth twitched hard.
Gu Jiao then pulled out five brocade pouches made of a special material, each containing a long strand of snow silkworm thread.
Once the pouches were distributed, the group began to move.

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
