Gu Jiao returned to the military camp with the Black Wind King.

In truth, the Black Wind Cavalry had long since received word that the northern city gate had been destroyed. The entire army had already fully armed themselves and stood ready to set out. The soldiers and warhorses were all clad in armor, each man gripping a long spear or sword, standing resolutely on the windswept training grounds, prepared to lay down their lives without hesitation.

Gu Jiao did not ask who had taken the lead in organizing them, perhaps because there was no need to ask.

They did not fight for the sake of wearing armor, but the moment they put it on, they bore the duty to fight for honor, to fight for their homeland, and to fight for the common people!

As long as there was still breath in their lungs, no one would be allowed to trample across Great Yan’s rivers and mountains!

To be honest, even Mu Qingchen was deeply shaken upon witnessing this scene. He had traveled with the army for over a month and had often thought he already understood these soldiers of Great Yan well enough, but now he realized his understanding was still far too shallow.

What kind of conviction did it take for one to be willing to sacrifice everything like this?

Gu Jiao sat atop the Black Wind King’s back, her expression solemn as she looked upon the imposing ranks of the Black Wind Cavalry and gave her command in a firm voice, “Very well. The soldiers of the Vanguard Battalion and the Assault Battalion , follow me into battle! The Reserve Battalion, remain on standby and prepare to engage at any moment!”

Mu Qingchen’s heart gave a sudden jolt. Were they really even preparing for the Reserve Battalion to fight?

Zhou Ren and Zhang Shiyong’s hearts surged with emotion when they heard the order. At long last, they too had a chance to step onto the battlefield!

But in the very next second, their arms, raised halfway in exhilaration, froze in place.

They were not afraid of death.

But if even the Reserve Battalion had to join the fight, that meant the situation had deteriorated to an unimaginable degree.

This battle… might very well be the one that decided the fate of the entire Black Wind Cavalry.

Gu Jiao cast a glance toward the Reserve Battalion, “Let’s hope we won’t need to use you.”

Because if it came to that, it would mean that both the Vanguard and Assault Battalions had been completely wiped out.

In that dream filled with the smoke of war and the roar of gunfire, the State of Liang had indeed fought a fierce and bitter battle against the Black Wind Cavalry. After being worn down by internal conflict to fewer than twenty thousand troops, the Black Wind Cavalry was surrounded and annihilated by the State of Liang’s massive army in the mountains of Mangshan.

…The entire army was wiped out.

Gu Jiao gripped the reins tightly and rode her horse through the cold and deserted streets.

This time, could she rewrite the fate of the Black Wind Cavalry?

Mu Qingchen spurred his horse and caught up to her. “Each city gate in Quyang City has three layers of doors. Only one of them was destroyed.”

Gu Jiao replied, “No, all three were destroyed.”

The innermost portcullis had its pivot sockets blown up, while another portcullis and a hidden gate were also rendered useless, as the traitorous soldier deliberately destroyed their corresponding lock slots.

“All three gates are damaged… No wonder they couldn’t hold the line…” Mu Qingchen frowned deeply. Something suddenly occurred to him, and he said, “Snow silkworm thread!”

Gu Jiao answered calmly, “No. Chu Feipeng has gloves that are specifically designed to counter snow silkworm thread.”

Mu Qingchen gave her a long, searching look. “You seem to know quite a lot about the State of Liang.”

“More or less.” Gu Jiao said vaguely without elaborating. Her ears twitched slightly, and she turned her gaze toward the direction of the northern city gate. “We have to speed up, they’re almost here!”

She squeezed her legs against the horse’s flanks. The Black Wind King instantly sensed her command, and with a powerful leap, he galloped forward at lightning speed!

Mu Qingchen was about to follow when a civilian, emboldened by curiosity, cracked open his door and stepped outside. “Young, Young Master Mu, is there going to be a war?”

Mu Qingchen pulled hard on the reins and quickly steered his horse aside so as not to block the troops behind him. Turning to that commoner who had once attended one of his public talks, he said solemnly, “Yes, the State of Liang’s army is invading. The northern city gate has been sabotaged by remnants of the Nangong Family. Right now, Lord Xiao is leading the Black Wind Cavalry to confront the enemy outside the north gate.”

As he spoke, he glanced around at the nearby civilians peeking their heads out to watch, and pressed his lips together before saying firmly, “Everyone, hurry back inside. Don’t come out unless it’s absolutely necessary.”

A worried villager asked anxiously, “Then what will happen to Quyang City…”

Mu Qingchen looked in the direction where the young commander led his forces into the distance. His voice steady and grave, he replied, “You must believe in Lord Xiao. He will definitely protect Quyang City.”

“…He’s still just a child, though…”

An old man leaning on a cane let out a quiet sigh.

Everyone fell silent.

Yes.

That young commander of the Black Wind Cavalry was said to be only in his teens.

So young, and yet already stepping onto the battlefield to kill the enemy.

How laughable it was that they had once suspected him of being a traitor and rebel, yet what kind of traitor, in a moment of life and death for a city, would offer up their own flesh and blood to protect its people?

……

By the time the tens of thousands of troops from the State of Liang arrived outside the northern city gate, the Black Wind Cavalry had already formed up neatly and stood ready in full formation to meet them.

The two sides faced each other with only ten zhang(approx. 109.4 feet) between them, just within the effective range of archers' bows.

Both sides had their shield units and archers in position, and a great battle was on the verge of breaking out at any moment.

Gu Jiao rode at the very front of the formation, taking the lead atop her horse.

She wore her own black-armored battle attire, and the Black Wind King, too, had a black helmet on its head and iron armor draped over its body.

Man and horse stood together beneath the vast sky, so small before the mighty army behind them, as insignificant as a grain of sand in the ocean. Yet it was precisely this sixteen-year-old warhorse and a youth who had just turned sixteen that now led the entire Black Wind Cavalry in fearlessly standing against the advancing army of the State of Liang.

“Youngster, you’re the commander of the Black Wind Cavalry, Xiao Liulang? I’ve heard you’re quite something!”

From the front of the State of Liang’s formation, a burly, broad-shouldered general wielding a spiked mace rode forward a few paces.

He looked down his nose at Gu Jiao with his nostrils flaring to the sky, and taunted, “Do you dare face me in single combat?”

A duel?

That, too, was one way for two armies to commence battle.

Mu Qingchen urged his horse forward until he was beside Gu Jiao and said, “His name is Pan Long. He’s one of Chu Feipeng’s fierce generals. I once accompanied my grandfather on a diplomatic mission to the State of Liang and saw him in the great hall. This man is notorious for his brutality and savagery. Prisoners of war who fall into his hands rarely meet a decent end.”

That was putting it mildly. Pan Long’s reputation for torturing prisoners was well known in the army, and it wasn’t uncommon for him to pillage, burn, and assault innocent women after battle.

His subordinates followed the same cruel practices, though Pan Long’s undeniable bravery had earned him a certain level of favor.

Li Jin stepped forward, clasped his fists, and said, “Commander, allow me to face him!”

Gu Jiao looked toward Pan Long’s direction and nodded. “Very well.”

Li Jin’s weapon was a long spear. With a spear in one hand and a shield in the other, he urged his horse forward to charge toward Pan Long.

When Pan Long saw this, he frowned with displeasure and raised his spiked mace high. “I came to fight that brat! Not some random foot soldier! Get the hell out of my way!”

He too charged forward, and the moment the words left his mouth, he swung his heavy, spike-covered mace directly at Li Jin’s head with vicious force!

Yet for some reason, whether due to haste or strategy, Li Jin didn’t even raise his shield. Instead, he drove his long spear straight toward Pan Long’s chest without flinching!

The two horses galloped past each other with a swift blur.

The entire battlefield fell deathly silent, broken only by the howling wind and the thunderous sound of hooves striking the earth.

Li Jin’s horse circled back and came to a sharp stop at just the right moment.

All eyes from the State of Liang army were locked on Pan Long’s figure, still upright in his saddle. But in the very next breath, his body tilted sideways, and he toppled stiffly into a pool of blood, his eyes wide and lifeless.

Li Jin turned to face the State of Liang’s formation and shouted with arrogant defiance, “Hah! So the mighty generals of the State of Liang can’t even handle one of our so-called foot soldiers from the Black Wind Cavalry!”

The Black Wind Cavalry erupted into loud, triumphant cheers!

Meanwhile, the soldiers of the State of Liang were visibly shaken, their expressions turning sour and grim.

They had originally planned to give the Black Wind Cavalry a humiliating blow to start the battle. Who could have guessed they would be the ones struck down in the opening move?

“Anyone else want to duel?” Li Jin asked coldly, challenging them.

“Young man, don’t get too cocky!”

An older general in his fifties stepped forward, brandishing a precious blade as he charged straight at Li Jin.

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
