Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)

Time ticked by, minute by minute, every second feeling longer than the last.

Outside the cave, Shangguan Qing and Tang Yueshan stood watch, trying to appear composed, but both had clammy hands from the tension.

Tang Yueshan never in his wildest dreams imagined that one day he would be standing guard while a woman gave birth.

What kind of strange situation was this?

He paced nervously up and down the passageway, muttering to himself in a voice barely above a whisper.

“It’s been so long… what if she can’t give birth?”

“No, no, it’ll be fine. That girl’s medical skills are extraordinary…”

“Why didn’t I ever realize childbirth was this dangerous…”

“My sister-in-law had it tough giving birth to Ming’er. I really should treat her better when I get home.”

Then, with Lady Zhang’s final muffled groan, a tiny, purplish-blue baby entered the world with a squelch.

It was a boy.

Though born prematurely, he was surprisingly large and well-formed.

“Why… why isn’t he crying…?” Lady Zhang asked weakly, turning her head to look at the silent infant in Gu Jiao’s arms.

Without hesitation, Gu Jiao grabbed the baby by his two feet, lifted him upside down, and gave his little butt a firm series of smacks.

For a moment, there was nothing, but then, the lifeless little one stirred, clenched his tiny fists, opened his mouth, and let out a loud, piercing wail——

The cry was so shockingly loud that Shangguan Qing and Tang Yueshan outside the cave both felt the hairs on their necks stand up!

Wasn’t this supposed to be a premature baby?

Even full-term newborns didn’t cry that loud!

In the military camp aboveground, both Xie Hangzhou and Elder Lu opened their eyes at almost the exact same moment.

Both had exceptionally sharp hearing, but they weren’t quite sure if they had heard correctly.

They each stepped out of their respective tents.

Xie Hangzhou caught sight of Elder Lu and immediately felt a sense of confirmation. “Did you… hear that too?”

Elder Lu nodded slightly. “I thought I might’ve misheard it, but it seems you did as well.”

Xie Hangzhou gave a low laugh. “Could it be the wailing of ghosts in the dead of night?”

Elder Lu replied coolly, “If General Xie truly believes in ghosts, then I have nothing more to say.”

Xie Hangzhou snorted coldly. “Humph. Even if there are ghosts, I’ll drag that crying little spirit out myself!”

Elder Lu said, “The sound seemed to come from underground.”

Both men crouched down at once and pressed their ears to the earth in unison.

At that exact moment, a bolt of lightning tore across the sky, followed by a thunderclap that split the night with deafening force.

“Waaah——”

The infant’s cries were perfectly drowned out by the thunder’s roar.

The two men stood up again.

Xie Hangzhou turned to Elder Lu and asked, “What do you make of it?”

Elder Lu gave a faint chuckle and said, “You’re the commanding officer of this operation, General Xie. I’ll follow your lead.”

Xie Hangzhou tilted his head back, looking up at the streaks of lightning leaping like dragons across the dark heavens, and smiled faintly. “Seems like they’ve got luck on their side… no, looks like it’s our luck that’s running strong.”

Elder Lu’s face lit up with a confident, victorious smile. “Although the rumbling thunder masked the sound of a baby's cries, there is no doubt that someone is hiding underground. As long as we dig deep enough, maybe three feet down, we will definitely be able to flush them out!”

……

Below ground.

Lady Zhang had already collapsed from exhaustion and fainted.

Gu Jiao held the wailing little one in her arms, and gently placed her own thumb into the baby’s mouth in an attempt to soothe him.

After sucking on it only a couple of times, the little fellow finally fell asleep.

Everyone in the tunnel collectively let out a long, relieved breath.

Tang Yueshan clung to a last shred of hope as he asked, “Only the first cry wasn’t covered by the thunder, surely our luck isn’t so bad that they actually caught that?”

Shangguan Qing had already sent ghost soldiers aboveground to scout the situation, and the intelligence they brought back was disheartening. The entire Jin army stationed on the surface had been awakened by Xie Hangzhou.

“It appears… we’ve been discovered. They’re getting ready to dig. However, it seems they don’t know our exact location yet, and they’ve started digging from the village itself.”

So reported the ghost soldier.

Tang Yueshan could tell from Shangguan Qing’s expression even before the words were spoken. He shut his eyes, silently cursing, just as he thought. There’s no such thing as luck on the battlefield.

The smallest slip meant lives were lost.

Shangguan Qing’s fists clenched tightly at his sides.

Tang Yueshan understood the turmoil in his heart. He patted Shangguan Qing on the shoulder, offering a few words of comfort. “This isn’t your fault. In truth, this location is already extremely well-hidden. Under normal circumstances, no sound of crying should be able to escape to the surface.”

And this really wasn’t just to console him. Tang Yueshan still remembered when his own son, Tang Ming, was born, healthy and loud, but even that boy’s cries weren’t as piercing as this child’s.

This one child cried louder than three ordinary infants combined.

Seeing Shangguan Qing remain silent, Tang Yueshan asked cautiously, “You’re not seriously thinking about killing the child, are you?”

Shangguan Qing glanced at the baby nestled in Gu Jiao’s arms. After a moment of visible tension, his clenched fists slowly relaxed. He exhaled and said in a low voice, “We’ve already been exposed. Killing him now won’t change anything.”

Gu Jiao turned to Shangguan Qing and asked, “How long can you hold out here?”

Hearing the question, Shangguan Qing stared deeply into Gu Jiao’s eyes. “What are you planning to do?”

Gu Jiao lowered her head and gently removed the baby’s fingers from his mouth. She said, “When he wakes up, he’s going to cry again. Once the thunder stops, the Jin army will be able to pinpoint your position easily. I’ll take him away from here.”

Shangguan Qing asked, “Where will you go? The Ghost King’s lair? That place would be exposed just the same.”

Gu Jiao replied firmly, “No. I’m going back to Quyang.”

Shangguan Qing was completely stunned. “You…”

Gu Jiao spoke with calm resolve. “I’m going back to Quyang to call for reinforcements. Give me two days. Within that time, the Black Wind Cavalry and the imperial court’s main forces will be pressing down on their heads!”

This would be the ultimate, decisive battle!

“It’s useless.” Shangguan Qing said, turning his back to her. “Even if you manage to leave Ghost Mountain, you won’t make it past Pucheng.”

Getting into Pucheng was easy, but getting out was another matter entirely, especially now that they were actively hunting anyone linked to Ghost Mountain. The checkpoints at the city gates were undoubtedly more heavily guarded than ever.

Even if he personally led the way, he couldn’t guarantee he would be able to get someone safely out.

Gu Jiao said, “Whether I can get out or not, I won’t know unless I try. Besides, you just need to hold Ghost Mountain. I’ll find my own way out of the city. Just tell me which tunnel leads out of Ghost Mountain. That’s all I need.”

In her world, there was no such thing as retreat.

Shangguan Qing asked, “Are you sure about this? It’s extremely dangerous.”

She wasn’t afraid of danger. Only ——

She thought of Xuanyuan Qi.

Even now, that unshakable instinct remained. Once she left this place, she might never see him again.

And all the secrets she sought could be buried forever.

One thousand lives weighed against the truth she so desperately wanted to uncover.

Without the slightest hesitation, she made her decision in her heart.

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
