The name Shi Tian had not been heard in many years, and yet, the memory of it had never truly faded. The moment it was even slightly mentioned, it was as if a piece of driftwood, long held down beneath the water by a massive hand, finally broke free and surged to the surface.

“I once… fought a battle with him.”

That battle was the most harrowing and unforgettable fight of Xuanyuan Qi’s entire life.

Shi Tian was clearly just a boy of thirteen or fourteen at the time, and yet he displayed a power more terrifying than even that of Xuanyuan Li.

Xuanyuan Qi only learned afterward that Shi Tian had been poisoned with the purple herb, a rare herb whose venom triggered a violent awakening of his latent potential. But even so, the raw talent Shi Tian demonstrated was utterly unmatched in the world.

Aside from the first Lord of the Shadows, Xuanyuan Qi could think of no one else who could have defeated that boy.

“I lost.”

Xuanyuan Qi admitted.

“So, you two did fight. But if you lost, then how did you get away?” Gu Jiao asked, remembering that Shi Tian’s mission had been to kill the Lord of the Shadows, who, at the time, was none other than Xuanyuan Qi.

Based on what she had learned recently while stationed at the border, Gu Jiao had pieced together that the Sword Lodge’s goal back then must have been the complete destruction of the entire Shadow Division, including the Imperial Advisor’s Hall and the Xuanyuan Family that operated under its protection.

Shi Tian had no reason to spare Xuanyuan Qi’s life.

Unless, of course, he had also sustained serious injuries himself.

“He suddenly stopped.” Xuanyuan Qi said.

Gu Jiao was slightly taken aback. “Why?”

Xuanyuan Qi shook his head slowly, as though weighed down by the memory. “I don’t know.”

He had collapsed to the ground, grievously wounded. Shi Tian’s sword was already pressed against his throat. Yet, all of a sudden, it didn’t move any further.

He had stared at Shi Tian in disbelief, his vision already clouded with blood, too blurred to make out the boy’s expression.

But he could feel it. Shi Tian was looking at him. And in that moment, the murderous aura that had been so intense just moments before began to fade, bit by bit.

In the end, Shi Tian didn’t say a single word. He simply turned around and walked away.

“He left?”

That didn’t fit the kind of person Shi Tian was. In truth, whether it was the Shi Tian of back then or the Long Yi of today, once either of them accepted an order, they would pursue its completion at all costs.

Gu Jiao rubbed her chin thoughtfully. “That’s very strange. You said Shi Tian was looking at you. Could it be that he saw something in you that made him let go of his killing intent?”

Xuanyuan Qi replied, “I don’t know.”

Gu Jiao asked, “Did you have anything unusual on you?”

“No.”

The only unusual item Xuanyuan Qi had on him at the time was the Shadow Token, but he had secretly handed it over to Xuanyuan Zheng before Shi Tian struck.

Gu Jiao truly couldn’t understand why Shi Tian would suddenly withdraw for no reason. She had originally believed that the outcome had been the result of a mutual defeat, with both parties too injured to continue.

“Not long after his encounter with you, Shi Tian lost his memory and ended up in Princess Xinyang’s mansion, becoming one of her Dragon Shadow Guards. I used to think, could it be that you were the one who caused his memory loss? But it seems that wasn’t the case.”

Xuanyuan Qi said quietly, “Now, I could.”

What he meant was that back then, he hadn’t had the power. But now, having become half a living corpse after entering Ghost Mountain, Xuanyuan Qi’s cultivation had reached a level far beyond ordinary limits.

Gu Jiao asked, “So what happened afterward? Did you come to Ghost Mountain right after Shi Tian left?”

Xuanyuan Qi shook his head. “No.”

After that, he was relentlessly hunted by the Sword Lodge for years. It wasn’t until he managed to fake his death a second time, as the second Lord of the Shadows, that he finally returned to the State of Yan. But what awaited him there was a tragedy: the devastating news that the Xuanyuan Family had been annihilated for treason.

Everyone was dead. His elder brother, his sister-in-law, even Sheng and the other boys, as well as Ah Zi. The Crown Princess had been deposed, and his sister, Empress Xuanyuan, had been cast into the cold palace…

Even the old members of the Shadow Division could no longer be contacted. He had believed they, too, had met a cruel end along with Zheng.

Gu Jiao said, “Xuanyuan Zheng didn’t return to the State of Yan after parting with you. He stayed in the State of Zhao instead. It’s possible the remnants of the Shadow Division also went to the State of Zhao in search of him.”

Xuanyuan Qi’s eyes lit with realization. “No wonder I couldn’t find them.”

“Keep going.” Gu Jiao said.

But Xuanyuan Qi didn’t continue.

When he returned to the State of Yan and saw the devastation wrought upon the Xuanyuan clan, he was deeply shaken. Combined with the fact that his old wounds had not yet healed, he quickly fell gravely ill and never recovered.

He had lost the will to live. Just as he was on the brink of death, he heard that person’s voice.

“Xuanyuan Qi, I need your help… Go to Ghost Mountain and wait for me. There’s something I need you to do.”

“What is it?”

“When the time comes, you’ll know.”

“How will I know the time has come?”

“You’ll know. If… I mean, if that moment never arrives, then that will be a regret we all must carry.”

He was burning with fever at the time, his mind drifting in and out of lucidity. All he could make out was a hazy silhouette. Had it not been for the token he discovered by his side the next morning after he fully regained consciousness, he would have truly believed the entire encounter had been nothing more than a fevered dream.

That person, who had vanished without a trace for so many years, had really reappeared.

But after entrusting him with a vague, unexplained mission, they disappeared once more.

Even so, he pulled himself together again, and without hesitation, he made his way to Ghost Mountain.

Ghost Mountain was not originally the final resting place of the Xuanyuan army. In the beginning, it was simply where their corpses had been discarded.

He buried one body after another with his bare hands.

At first, he thought that burying the fallen was the task that person had given him.

But gradually, as soldiers from the Liang army, the Jin army, and even bandits began intruding, the graveyard was repeatedly desecrated and defiled. He then came to believe that his true mission was to guard this sacred ground.

Day after day, facing the endless sea of graves, he eventually lost the awareness that he was still alive at all.

And yet, the longer he stayed, the more uncertain he became about what his mission actually was.

His life was approaching its end, and still, that person never came. His purpose, his mission, never arrived.

This was a secret shared between him and that person, something he could not reveal to a third party. So Xuanyuan Qi left this part unsaid.

Gu Jiao noticed his silence, but she didn’t press him. Everyone had their own secrets. Besides, tonight’s revelations had already been quite substantial.

Aside from the mystery surrounding Long Yi’s memory loss, every other truth had finally come to light.

“Girl! How much longer are we waiting?” Tang Yueshan’s voice called from the mouth of the cavern.

“Almost done!” Gu Jiao called back, then turned to Xuanyuan Qi and asked, “Earlier, you told us to wait half an hour. What did you mean by that?”

Xuanyuan Qi replied haltingly, “Half… an hour… from now… a path… will open… directly… out of… Ghost Mountain. Horses… can pass.”

Gu Jiao immediately understood. “I see.”

If they could leave Ghost Mountain directly through that passage, they would completely avoid the Jin army patrolling the forest. It was, without question, their best option at the moment.

And since the horses could pass through as well, she could ride Black Wind King and reach Quyang even faster.

Gu Jiao paused, then asked him, “Will you… be coming with us? Or are you staying behind here in Ghost Mountain, still waiting for that person?”

Xuanyuan Qi didn’t answer.

But Gu Jiao understood his decision without needing a word more.

He had spent over a decade of his later life waiting for that person. He would not leave so easily now.

Gu Jiao said gently, “Then take care of yourself.”

“Girl! My knife sheath’s broken!” Tang Yueshan came over and handed her the leather sheath, now torn clean in two.

“How did it break?” Gu Jiao asked.

Tang Yueshan’s eyes flickered. “I… I don’t know! It just… broke all of a sudden.”

No way would he admit he had tried to sneak a ride on Black Wind King, only to have the beast bite it to shreds!

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
