Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)

Gu Jiao wasn’t a normal person either. Every day, she endured the torment of the violent factors within her.

But Godfather had once told her: sometimes people don’t refrain from harming the weak because of compassion, but because the truly strong must have their pride.

Strength was not born for tyranny, but to serve as protection.

Yue Liuyi sneered, “You’re right, I don’t understand. And I don’t want to! I’ll never be as foolish as you generals of Great Yan! You, that Seventh Master Xuanyuan, even that Xuanyuan Qi fellow. You’re all idiots who spill your blood for worthless commoners! I serve only my Lord!”

“Heh, what a bargain this is. One peasant’s life in exchange for the commander of the Black Wind Cavalry? Totally worth it!”

Yue Liuyi sat leisurely in a mechanical hanging basket. After speaking, she waved toward Gu Jiao above and said cheerfully, “Goodbye, commander of the Black Wind Cavalry.”

She snapped her fingers, and the person below her activated the mechanism. The basket she sat in began to descend slowly, eventually vanishing into a secret chamber beneath the tower.

At the same time, the mechanism above Gu Jiao began to rotate.

It was a massive winch, located at the top of the silk threads. With every turn of the winch, the snow silkworm threads tightened ever so slightly around Gu Jiao.

“Young Commander!”

It was Zhao Dengfeng’s voice.

The three of them had finally located the room atop the tower. They saw Gu Jiao standing on just two crossed planks, suspended in midair. It was far too dangerous!

Without hesitation, the three of them charged forward, determined to pull Gu Jiao out of the trap!

“Don’t come any closer!” Gu Jiao said firmly.

The three men immediately halted their steps.

Gu Jiao added, “There’s snow silkworm threads here.”

Because the three of them were standing in the way and blocking the light, they couldn’t see clearly at first. It was only after they moved aside and adjusted their angle under the light that they finally noticed the dense web of fine threads crisscrossing the room.

So many snow silkworm threads… What they saw stunned them into silence.

The planks beneath Gu Jiao’s feet were extremely narrow, and she had to maintain perfect balance to keep herself from falling.

With utmost care, she placed her red-tasselled spear gently on the wooden board, then slowly took out a pair of silver-thread gloves and slipped them on.

She was planning to test if she could tear open a small gap.

But the moment she touched one of the threads, the winch above suddenly groaned and turned two full revolutions with increased force!

With a sharp swish, the snow silkworm threads tightened by another inch!

Hiss!

One of the red tassels hanging from her spear was instantly sliced off.

Wen Renchong’s eyes widened in alarm. “The winch! Stop the winch!”

But now a real problem arose. How were they supposed to stop it?

They tried throwing weapons and concealed darts, but none of them even made it close. Before reaching the winch, everything was shredded to pieces by the snow silkworm threads!

Crack!

The winch rotated again, and a small piece of the horizontal wooden plank was sliced clean off.

Once all the planks were cut through, Gu Jiao would fall straight into the web of threads below, where she would be minced into flesh.

“What do we do now?” Zhao Dengfeng asked anxiously.

Wen Renchong frowned deeply. “We’ll have to act from the rooftop. You two head up. I’ll give the instructions, and you follow them precisely.”

The two of them nodded without hesitation and leapt up onto the roof using their qinggong.

Wen Renchong stood at the door, his eyes locked tightly on the winch’s position. “A little to the right. Yes, that tile. Remove it, but be careful not to trigger any mechanisms.”

The two men carefully removed the tile from the roof. At last, they could see the winch beneath it.

Li Shen drew his longsword and thrust it down, jamming it into the axle of the winch wheel.

“It worked.” Zhao Dengfeng exhaled a long breath of relief.

But just as he finished speaking, a sharp crack echoed out. The winch was so powerful it snapped Li Shen’s sword clean in half!

To make matters worse, the winch’s spinning suddenly accelerated dramatically!

Snow silkworm threads surged in from every direction, weaving tighter and tighter as they aimed to shred Gu Jiao where she stood!

Wen Renchong’s heart sank like falling into an icy pit. “Zhao Dengfeng! Where’s your sword?!”

Zhao Dengfeng was drenched in cold sweat. “The winch is moving too fast! I can’t wedge it in!”

Wen Renchong shouted, “You have to wedge it in! If we don’t stop it, the young commander will die!”

Zhao Dengfeng was almost in tears, smoke practically coming out of his ears. “You think I don’t want to?! But I really can’t jam it in!”

It was over. Completely over.

The snow silkworm threads were about to converge from all directions.

Boom!

A fierce and domineering sword qi tore through the air from behind the two men, blasting both of them aside and ripping off half the roof in the process!

Wen Renchong, standing in the doorway of the room, was suddenly engulfed by a wave of dust and debris from the collapsing roof tiles, unable to open his eyes.

“Young commander——”

Li Shen cried out in alarm.

A tall and commanding figure descended from the sky, landing on one knee atop the roof beam. With both hands gripping a heavy black-iron sword, he slashed downward with immense force, jamming the blade deep into the runaway winch and stopping it cold!

Everyone present broke into a cold sweat, staring in stunned disbelief at the expert who had appeared from thin air.

Wasn’t this the same elder who had stood guard in front of the young commander’s tent for days, forbidding anyone from visiting her while she lay unconscious?

They had heard he had gone off to investigate something in Pucheng.

He looked quite old, yet his martial strength was this terrifying?

Gu Jiao lifted her head to look at the man who had descended like a god from the heavens. It was none other than her sworn brother, the Old Marquis.

Her sworn brother was amazing. Truly awe-inspiring!

Old Marquis ignored the look of admiration and brotherly awe being directed at him from the other. He quickly located the mechanism beneath the winch and deactivated it, removing all the snow silkworm threads that had surrounded Gu Jiao.

Completely unaware that her identity had already been exposed, Gu Jiao picked up the red-tasselled spear resting on the wooden plank and reached her hand out toward the Old Marquis.

Pull me up!

Old Marquis looked at this bold and cheeky little girl who had the nerve to play tricks on her own grandfather, and he was so furious he could hardly contain his anger!

Did he have nothing better to do than to come save this brat?

Wasn’t she supposed to be all capable and self-sufficient?

Then let her get up on her own if she was so skilled!

If she couldn’t, then let her fall!

If he ever came to help her again, then he wasn’t Gu Chao anymore!

Gu Jiao pointed at her dainty little foot.

I twisted my ankle.

……

Half a quarter of an hour later.

With an utterly expressionless face, Old Marquis carried Gu Jiao on his back as he descended the city tower.

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
