Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)
Mu Qingchen looked at the stone wall ahead, then at the sheepskin scroll in his hand, and said, “According to the map, there should be a tunnel here… but now it’s gone.”
Shangguan Yan asked, “Could something have happened that caused the passage to be sealed off?”
Just as her words fell, the wall before them slowly shifted. A stone door creaked open, and a familiar figure stepped out.
Shangguan Yan’s eyes lit up. “Qing’er!”
Shangguan Qing stood there dressed in plain white brocade robes, clean and sharp, strikingly handsome. The mask he had been wearing was now removed, revealing a face almost identical to Xiao Heng’s, with a single tear-shaped mole below his right eye that added to his charm.
Even though their faces looked the same, Shangguan Yan could still instantly tell her two sons apart.
Seeing that her son was safe and unharmed, she broke into a joyful smile.
But the very next moment, her smile froze.
Because another figure stepped out from the tunnel behind her son.
Shangguan Yan’s smile turned cold. “Gongsun Yu.”
Gongsun Yu came to stand beside Shangguan Qing. Behind him, five other martial experts emerged. One of them was Elder Lu, and another was Xie Hangzhou.
Xie Hangzhou had the tip of his long sword pressed against Shangguan Qing’s back.
No one had expected that instead of guarding the city walls, Gongsun Yu would come to Ghost Mountain!
Mu Qingchen and the accompanying guards immediately drew their swords, positioning themselves to form a protective circle around Shangguan Yan.
The gentle demeanor of a mother vanished from Shangguan Yan’s face. What replaced it was the commanding presence of the Crown Princess of the Empire. Her voice was icy as she said, “Gongsun Yu, what exactly are you trying to do?”
Gongsun Yu replied in a slow, indifferent tone, “Your Highness, Crown Princess of Great Yan. It’s been many years, and I’m honored you still remember me.”
Shangguan Yan gave a faint, mocking smile. “A defeated general under my cousin’s hand. I just happened to recall the name, that’s all.”
Back when the State of Jin sent an envoy to the State of Yan, Xuanyuan Sheng had fought against Gongsun Yu and won.
Gongsun Yu was not provoked. With an air of lazy arrogance, he said, “What a pity that Xuanyuan Sheng was shot dead atop the city tower. If he were still alive, I wouldn’t mind sparring with him again.”
Xuanyuan Sheng’s tragic death was a permanent thorn in Shangguan Yan’s heart. He hadn’t died on the battlefield at the hands of an enemy but had been nailed to the city tower by his own red-tasseled spear.
Such a cruel and humiliating end!
Under her wide sleeves, Shangguan Yan’s nails nearly pierced into the flesh of her palms, yet her expression remained composed as she said, “My eldest cousin brother may be gone, but my seventh cousin brother is still alive. If you manage to leave here in one piece, you can challenge him. But I suspect the outcome will be no different than it was years ago.”
Gongsun Yu let out a soft scoff. “Arrogant.”
Shangguan Yan’s voice turned sharp and cold. “Enough nonsense. If you’ve got the guts, go fight a proper battle.”
Gongsun Yu chuckled lightly. “With all of you in my hands, why would I bother with battles? Crown Princess, will you surrender quietly, or shall I have my men seize you?”
Mu Qingchen raised his sword.
Gongsun Yu ignored him and continued to look directly at Shangguan Yan. “You should understand that your men are no match for mine. If you insist on sending them to their deaths, I won’t stop you.”
Shangguan Yan said, “Qingchen, stand down.”
Mu Qingchen turned his head to look at her. “Your Highness!”
Shangguan Yan gave a subtle nod. “Do as I say.”
As she spoke, she looked straight at Gongsun Yu and solemnly declared, “I will go with you, along with the Imperial Grandson, so let them go.”
“Very well.” Gongsun Yu agreed readily.
Elder Lu objected, “General, if we let them go, what if they call for reinforcements——”
But Gongsun Yu responded with unrestrained confidence, “Let them call reinforcements if they wish. With the Crown Princess and the Eldest Imperial Grandson in my hands, what difference would ten thousand troops make? Isn’t that right, Your Highness?”
Shangguan Yan turned her face away in disgust, not wanting to dignify him with a response.
Gongsun Yu waved his hand dismissively.
Xie Hangzhou pointed his longsword at Mu Qingchen and the others, his tone sharp with warning, “My Lord already said he’d let you go, what are you still standing here for? If you don’t leave now, I won’t hold back!”
Shangguan Yan spoke with authority, “All of you, leave at once. That’s a military order!”
A military order was as unshakable as a mountain, no one dared defy it!
Mu Qingchen clenched his fist, then lowered to one knee with his sword in hand, giving her a solemn bow. “Qingchen takes his leave!”
The group turned around and followed the path they had taken to return the way they came.
Shangguan Yan stepped forward until she stood before her son. She reached out a hand to gently caress his gaunt cheek, her voice filled with concern. “You’ve gotten thinner… Who allowed you to come to the borderlands? Didn’t I tell you to stay quietly at the manor? You just wouldn’t listen.”
Shangguan Qing lowered his head in remorse. “I was wrong, Mother.”
Shangguan Yan continued with the same motherly sternness, “Have you been taking your medicine properly?”
Shangguan Qing responded with a pitiful tone, “I haven’t taken today’s dose yet.”
Shangguan Yan’s face changed as she quickly asked, “Why not?”
Shangguan Qing glanced in the direction of their captors.
Shangguan Yan’s brows furrowed deeply, and her expression turned cold as she glared at Gongsun Yu. “You took my son’s medicine? Give it back! If anything happens to him, I’ll die right here in this place! Then I’d like to see what leverage you think you still have over the State of Yan’s army!”
Gongsun Yu replied indifferently, “Give it to him.”
Xie Hangzhou opened the bundle they had taken from Shangguan Qing and rummaged through it. It was full of bottles and jars. “Which one is your medicine?”
Shangguan Qing pointed. “That one.”
Xie Hangzhou asked again, “Which one exactly?”
Shangguan Qing repeated, “That one.”
“Find it yourself!” Xie Hangzhou scoffed as he reached in to confiscate the daggers and hidden weapons from the bundle.
Shangguan Qing took the bundle back, crouched down, and carefully picked out a small medicine bottle. He uncorked it, tilted his head back, and drank it down in one go.
Xie Hangzhou let out a small breath of relief. For a moment, he had nearly believed the boy was planning some kind of trick...
Suddenly, Shangguan Qing clutched his chest and collapsed to the ground in agony. “You… you poisoned me…”
Xie Hangzhou’s expression changed dramatically. “I did not!”
Shangguan Qing writhed in pain, rolling across the floor as he groaned and convulsed. Shangguan Yan’s face went deathly pale, and she rushed to him in a panic. “Qing’er——”
“Ah—” Shangguan Qing’s face contorted in pain, his eyes nearly bursting from their sockets. At last, he couldn’t take it anymore and slammed his palm hard against the stone wall beside him!
With a loud crash, the floor beneath them suddenly gave way, and both Shangguan Qing and Shangguan Yan plummeted through the opening!
Xie Hangzhou leapt forward and threw himself to the ground, using both hands to hold down the stone mechanism that was trying to close the trapdoor with tremendous force.
Then he saw a face, a handsome, mocking, and full of sardonic amusement face.
Shangguan Qing was lying on a soft pile of straw, a fire-gun held casually in his arms. Gone was the obedient and delicate youth from before; in his place was a cocky, rogue-like troublemaker, full of swagger and cunning.
The corner of his right lip curled up into a devilish grin. “Goodbye, General Xie.”
Bang!
Xie Hangzhou was blown away by a single gunshot!

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
