Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)

This son of hers, Shangguan Qing, looked every bit the lazy, unserious type, yet his heart was sincere and pure.

He hadn’t excelled either in civil or martial pursuits, and yet he had managed to achieve things that both civil officials and generals had failed to accomplish.

If only he didn’t have such a frail body… her Qing’er…

“Mother! I hear something!”

Shangguan Qing’s voice cut through her thoughts.

Shangguan Yan’s expression tightened as she lifted her head, straining her ears to listen to the noise above. “It’s footsteps…”

Shangguan Qing asked, puzzled, “What are they rushing around for up there?”

“Hurry! All of you move faster! Over here! This side too!”

It was the Jin soldiers barking orders.

Shangguan Yan frowned. “Sounds like… they’re splashing water?”

“Splashing water…” Shangguan Qing looked up toward the ceiling, thinking carefully. Then his face changed. “This is bad! They’re planning to set the tunnels on fire!”

Shangguan Yan clenched her fists. “Are they trying to roast us like clay chickens in a kiln?”

Shangguan Qing’s face turned grim. “We can’t let them light the fire…”

The cavern where the villagers and ghost soldiers were located was quite deep and had a stream running through it, so they weren’t too worried about heat damage. But the passageways were filled with all sorts of mechanisms, some of which had black gunpowder buried within.

If a fire triggered an explosion, the consequences would be utterly unpredictable.

A thousand lives, buried alive beneath the collapsed tunnels——such a scene would be no less than a living hell on earth.

“I’ll go distract them!” Shangguan Qing declared without hesitation.

“Qing’er, come back here!” Shangguan Yan grabbed his arm tightly. “If anyone’s going, it should be me! I’m the Crown Princess, I hold a higher status than you, and my words carry more weight!”

Shangguan Qing helplessly raised his hands in surrender. “Alright, alright, I won’t fight you on this.”

But even as he said that, he suddenly pressed a hidden mechanism on the wall, triggering a loud rumble as a passage opened behind them, and in one swift motion, he shoved Shangguan Yan into it.

Shangguan Qing called out, “Just keep walking straight, it leads to the back of the mountain!”

Shangguan Yan’s face changed drastically. “Qing’er!”

The stone door slammed shut behind her.

Shangguan Yan pounded on the door, frantically searching for a way to open it. “Qing’er! Qing’er!”

Shangguan Qing had already turned and started walking forward. His eyes were sharp and resolute, his steps unwavering.

“To draw their attention… I only need to stall them with a negotiation. With my wit, buying some time shouldn’t be difficult. The imperial army should be arriving soon enough…”

He muttered to himself, but then, without warning, a sharp pain tore through his chest, and his legs gave out beneath him; he dropped to one knee.

The poison in his body… why did it have to flare up at this moment?

He reached for the pouch at his waist, which was completely empty.

The antidote was gone!

Just hold on a little longer… make it through this wave…

It wasn’t the first time the poison had flared up like this.

He could still move.

Shangguan Qing clutched his chest with one hand, braced himself against the wall with the other, and forced himself upright.

“Negotiate with Gongsun Yu…”

“I’m the Eldest Imperial Grandson of Great Yan…”

“If they capture me… they can threaten our military forces…”

“I can even lead them to a treasure…”

“Ahk——”

A searing pain exploded in his chest, and Shangguan Qing collapsed completely, unable to keep himself up any longer.

His knee scraped against the ground, tearing open the skin, and he bit down so hard when he fell that blood welled up from his gums.

The venom ravaged his body and he couldn’t get back up.

He had never known pain like this. Was this what dying felt like?

No…

He couldn’t die yet…

Not now…

Shangguan Qing gritted his teeth against the pain that pierced his very soul. Mustering every last ounce of strength he had left, he began to crawl forward, inch by inch, toward the tunnel entrance.

Almost there.

But he had no more strength.

His hand reached out and triggered the mechanism for the exit, but he no longer had the strength to drag himself through it.

He collapsed to the ground and lost the last sliver of consciousness.

……

At the hour of shenshi(3-5 pm), fierce wind howled.

Marquis Xuanping and fifty thousand imperial troops launched a fierce assault on the northern city gate.

Six State of Liang war chariots, shielded by heavy defenses, charged through the rain of arrows and falling stones from the city tower, slamming into the sealed gates one after another.

That gate had already been violently rammed a month ago. It had only just been repaired a few days earlier, and now it was being hit again.

Behind the gate, Jin troops stood at the ready with long spears.

"Why are they ramming so soon? Was there a mistake somewhere?" one Jin soldier asked.

Back when they attacked Pucheng, it took at least fifteen minutes from sounding the charge to actually hitting the gate. They also dispatched a total of six chariots, and four of them were smashed by the boulders from the tower.

No one could answer him.

A commanding officer organizing the defense below called out, “Hold your positions! The Yan forces are fewer than ours, and they just fought a battle against the State of Liang before rushing here overnight. Their entire army is exhausted. They’re only showing off with weapons looted from the Liang army. At best, they’re a spent force! Even if they break through, they’re no match for us!”

His words successfully rallied the troops.

The Jin soldiers on the tower regained their morale!

Outside the city wall, wave after wave of siege ladders broke through the arrow storm and reached the base of the wall.

The State of Liang’s siege ladders were exceptionally effective, with shields mounted above, soldiers standing on a lifting platform that rose with a ‘whish’, and the shield opened a hatch at the top.

Just as a Jin soldier lifted a rock, a Yan soldier burst through the hatch and drove a spear through his throat!

Once the first climbed the wall, more followed.

The Jin troops soon learned the ladder’s pattern. Whenever the hatch opened, they thrust swords or spears down fiercely!

Men climbed up, and men fell down.

War never belonged solely to one side. It was built on countless corpses, and win or lose, there was always bloodshed.

Another hatch opened. A Jin soldier roared and stabbed downward, but just then, a Yan soldier flanked him and knocked his weapon aside, hacking him off the wall!

More Yan soldiers surged up, and the situation atop the wall spiraled out of control.

They were weary troops, but not a spent force.

This was Great Yan’s land. No one could take it!

Seeing the tide turning, a Jin commander shouted, “Bring up the crossbows!”

These massive crossbows had longer range and greater power than bows and could destroy any chariot.

Tang Yueshan drew his longbow and fired arrow after arrow, taking down each crossbowman in turn!

From such a distance and with such tricky angles, the Jin troops couldn’t even tell how he was hitting his targets!

“It’s that guy! Shoot him!”

But it was too late.

With a deafening crash, the final gate was breached.

PLEASE CHECK OUT OUR NEW PROJECT:

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
