Beneath the tunnel, more than three hundred ghost soldiers and over five hundred villagers were still trapped.
They didn’t have the luxury of lingering in past sorrows; what they needed to do was rescue the villagers immediately or force the Jin army out of the village.
The fastest and most effective way was to kill Gongsun Yu.
Mu Qingchen and Chang Jing once again returned to the underground tunnel in search of the enemy, but they didn’t even catch the faintest trace of Gongsun Yu.
Gongsun Yu was no longer inside the tunnel; he had already been escorted out by Zhu Zhangkuang.
The two of them had entered the forest.
Zhu Zhangkuang looked at his Lordship’s blood-stained armor with concern and asked, “My Lord, are you alright?”
For such thick and solid armor to have been pierced by that man, it was truly terrifying!
Gongsun Yu said calmly, “It didn’t strike any vital organs, it’s nothing serious. Why are you here? I told you to hold the north city gate.”
Zhu Zhangkuang replied, “I saw the Yan army sending a unit toward Ghost Mountain and feared they might pose a threat to your safety. General Cheng is guarding the gate, so you can rest easy, my Lord. But… my Lord, I haven’t seen Xie Hangzhou. Where is he?”
Gongsun Yu frowned. “He’s dead.”
Zhu Zhangkuang was stunned. “What?!”
Gongsun Yu’s voice turned cold. “I underestimated that imperial grandson. Poisoned from childhood, I assumed he was a cripple… Where is Yue Liuyi?”
Zhu Zhangkuang answered with some hesitation, “According to the scouts’ reports, she fell into the hands of the Yan army… I’m afraid… her fate doesn’t look promising either.”
Of the four top generals, three had already fallen.
Gongsun Yu slammed his fist against a large tree beside him. A flock of birds, startled by the impact, burst from the branches and scattered into the sky in a flurry of wings.
The usual detached calm on his face had vanished, replaced by a heavy, volatile mix of anxiety and murderous rage.
Clenching his teeth, he growled, “What is with the State of Yan?! The Xuanyuan Family is supposed to be finished, and the Lord of the Shadows is dead too. Why are they still so damn hard to deal with?!”
“Who said the Xuanyuan Family is finished? Who told you the Lord of the Shadows is dead?!”
A voice, sharp and cold as a blade, suddenly echoed through the forest.
The next instant, Liao Chen descended like a god, stepping lightly upon a branch, his figure clad in mist and morning light, as if wrapped in clouds and radiance, descending from the heavens with divine might.
In his hand he wielded a three-foot azure blade, its edge radiating a fierce and unrelenting aura as he pointed it directly at Gongsun Yu and declared, “The third Lord of the Shadows, Xuanyuan Zheng, has come to claim the life of General Gongsun!”
The third Lord of the Shadows?
Gongsun Yu's pupils shrank abruptly, his expression filled with disbelief. It was almost impossible for him to accept this as reality.
Wasn’t the line of Lords of the Shadows supposed to have ended with Xuanyuan Qi?
How could this be…
Xuanyuan Qi only became the second Lord of the Shadows after faking his death, but his secret connections with the Xuanyuan Family eventually drew attention, and within a few years, spies from the State of Jin uncovered the truth.
However, Xuanyuan Qi had hidden Xuanyuan Zheng exceptionally well. Even the family genealogy had been quietly altered to omit him, so it was no wonder that the world remained unaware of Xuanyuan Zheng’s existence.
On the side of the State of Jin, the only person who had ever seen Xuanyuan Zheng and knew of his identity was Shi Tian.
And evidently, Shi Tian had never let that information slip out.
Yet, on closer thought, the clues had always been there.
When Gongsun Yu killed Xuanyuan Qi, he had seen this same young man in front of him now as he rushed toward them from afar, crying out and calling Xuanyuan Qi “father.”
So, he truly was Xuanyuan Qi’s son.
In that case, it made sense that he had inherited Xuanyuan Qi’s legacy and become the third Lord of the Shadows.
Gongsun Yu muttered coldly under his breath, “What is Sword Lodge doing with their so-called assassinations? They said Xuanyuan Qi was dead, but he clearly wasn’t. They said they wiped out the Shadow Division, and yet here stands Xuanyuan Qi’s biological son in broad daylight.”
He pushed aside his thoughts and raised his chin arrogantly, staring across at Liao Chen. “Even your father was defeated by my hand. Do you truly believe you can win against me?”
The moment Xuanyuan Qi was mentioned, Liao Chen’s fury surged and doubled in intensity.
His father had been besieged by Jin soldiers, ambushed when gravely injured, and run through the chest by Gongsun Yu… twice!
To this day, his fate remained unknown.
It was entirely possible that after waiting all these years, he would still end up eternally separated from his father by death!
And all of it… every last bit… was because of Gongsun Yu!
“You seem rather upset.” Gongsun Yu had always delighted in tormenting the minds of powerful opponents, and now, the corners of his lips curled ever so faintly. “Your father isn’t the only member of the Xuanyuan Family to die by my hand. Back when your family plotted rebellion, do you really think the pitiful number of imperial troops could’ve wiped out so many of your Xuanyuan warriors? Let’s be honest, your Yan army might have had numbers, but not many true experts.”
“Your uncle, Xuanyuan Li, died at the hands of our Jin army’s mechanical traps!”
“Your cousin, Xuanyuan Zi, that woman who went into battle even while pregnant, was slain by a disciple from Sword Lodge!”
“Your cousin Xuanyuan Sheng… his whereabouts were leaked by someone from the Nangong Family. But the one who ended his life… was me.”
“I was the one who nailed him to the city wall with a spear!”
“I was the one who gave the order to have him pierced by a thousand arrows!”
“Your Xuanyuan Family’s so-called elites were all utterly worthless!”
Liao Chen was absolutely livid!
Even though he knew full well that the man was goading him, he simply couldn’t control the fury boiling inside him!
His breathing turned chaotic.
Gongsun Yu seized the opportunity to strike with a palm attack. Liao Chen, unable to channel his internal force in time, was hit squarely by the blow. The powerful force sent him flying, slamming heavily into the trunk of a large tree before he crashed down to the ground in a heap.
Gongsun Yu clicked his tongue twice, gazing down contemptuously at the sprawled figure of Liao Chen, then let out a scoffing laugh. “See? This is what your Xuanyuan Family amounts to, completely vulnerable and pathetically easy to defeat.”
“You… are not allowed to insult the Xuanyuan Family!” Liao Chen forced himself up using his longsword for support, wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth, then swung the sword in a vicious stab toward Gongsun Yu!
Now that they were in a more open area, both sides could unleash more powerful techniques.
Gongsun Yu instantly sensed a sharp and deadly sword aura, far more aggressive than he had anticipated.
Though he dodged to the side, the edge of Liao Chen’s sword qi still struck his wound.
The blood clot that had just barely started to form was torn apart instantly, and fresh blood streamed down from under his armor.
Liao Chen’s voice was cold and steady. “Now tell me, who’s really the weak one?”
Zhu Zhangkuang took a step forward and raised his iron fist. “My Lord! Allow me to deal with him!”
As soon as he finished speaking, he charged straight at Liao Chen.
But before he could even get close, a young man in dark robes suddenly descended from the sky, his sword striking with such force that it knocked Zhu Zhangkuang back several paces!
Such an icy and chilling sword qi!
He had almost been injured!
After regaining his footing, Zhu Zhangkuang frowned. But once he got a clear look at the person who had attacked him, who was merely a youth of seventeen or eighteen, his expression grew even darker. “Where did this wild brat come from?”
He had arrived late and hadn’t heard Elder Lu’s conversation with Chang Jing.
Gongsun Yu offered a reminder, “Be careful. He’s the young Sect Leader of the Hidden Night Sect.”

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
