Marquis Xuanping could tell Shangguan Qing wasn’t just putting on a brave face. He truly was satisfied with the life he had lived these past twenty years. And that brought a touch of comfort to his heart.
He only regretted that they had recognized each other so late.
Qing’er had less than two months left to live...
“I’ll find someone who can cure you.” He said.
Shangguan Qing lay back down on the bed, responding without much interest, “Mm, lots of people say that. That brat with the surname Xiao said the same thing.”
“Surname Xiao?” Marquis Xuanping quickly realized he was referring to Gu Jiao, and explained, “She’s your sister-in-law.”
“What?” Shangguan Qing sat up in shock. “He, he, he’s a girl?!”
What kind of girl was that vicious?!
Killing without blinking! Surely that phrase was made for her!
What kind of broken thoughts must that little brother he had never met have had to actually marry a little god of death like her?
Also, he just came to the borderlands for a bit of fun, so why had he ended up picking up a father and a sister-in-law? Couldn’t he just enjoy being the Ghost King in peace?
Marquis Xuanping’s gaze fell on Shangguan Qing’s handsome face. “You don’t need a disguise here. Let your father see what you really look like, alright?”
Shangguan Qing thought for a moment and agreed.
He poured some warm tea, soaked a cloth, and wiped off the makeup and prosthetics from his face, revealing his true appearance underneath.
This was a face that bore a fifty-percent resemblance to Marquis Xuanping, its shape and the bridge of the nose were almost exact replicas, yet those eyes and brows looked strikingly like Princess Xinyang’s.
Even the elegant widow’s peak on his forehead was the same as hers.
Marquis Xuanping was dazed for a moment. “You really… look a lot like your mother.”
“Hmm?” Shangguan Qing blinked in mild confusion.
Marquis Xuanping added, “Your other mother.”
Shangguan Qing gave a small ‘oh’ and asked, “That princess from the State of Zhao?”
That unfamiliar title carried with it a kind of poignant distance.
Marquis Xuanping nodded. “Her name is Qin Fengwan, and she held the title of Princess Xinyang. She doesn’t know about you yet, but if she did, she’d be so happy she’d probably turn into a fool…”
Shangguan Qing looked at him curiously.
Marquis Xuanping immediately corrected himself in the next second, “—I mean, who knows what she’d do. Anyway, after the war, I’ll take you to the State of Zhao to meet her. Or, if you don’t want to go to the State of Zhao, I’ll bring her to the State of Yan to see you.”
“We’ll see.” Shangguan Qing replied, waving a hand casually, clearly not too interested.
Something occurred to him then, and he asked, “Is my mother’s son doing well?”
By “mother,” he meant Shangguan Yan, and the “son” referred to Xiao Heng.
Marquis Xuanping answered, “Very well. Your mother raised him at her side all these years and treated him like her own, personally teaching him to read and write.”
Shangguan Qing stared in disbelief. “Read… and write? Aren’t you a military man? Why isn’t he learning martial arts?”
Marquis Xuanping sighed helplessly. “Your mother didn’t want him learning martial arts. She just wanted him to sit quietly in the academy and read. Fortunately, he lived up to her expectations; he became a scholar at thirteen, and at eighteen, passed the imperial exam as the youngest top scholar in the State of Zhao.”
“He’s even a top scholar…” Shangguan Qing secretly clenched his fists. Even if he had eight lifetimes, he wouldn’t be able to top the imperial exam…
He gave a little cough, lifted his chin and scoffed, “Bookworm!”
Then suddenly remembering something, he folded his arms and gave a cold, sinister laugh.
When he finally met that bookworm, he would make sure to give him a proper welcome!
Shangguan Qing set his grand ambitions in motion, completely unaware that his younger brother was actually a little glutinous rice dumpling stuffed with black sesame.
Just imagining what it would be like to bully a top scholar little brother until he cried made Shangguan Qing feel incredibly cool and impressive.
He began to eagerly look forward to the day that would finally happen.
Marquis Xuanping stayed in the room for nearly half an hour. It was impossible to expect that they could suddenly become free of all awkwardness and act as if they had lived side by side for twenty years.
But the fact that his son didn’t reject him made a heavy weight drop from Marquis Xuanping’s heart.
He had never feared war, but when it came to how to be a good father, he was filled with nothing but self-doubt.
He was a rough man, and yet Ah Heng was so smart, so hardworking, he would recite poems his father didn’t understand, gazing at him with eyes full of admiration and hope, longing to match couplets with him.
But how could he possibly match a couplet?
Yet he couldn’t bear to admit defeat either, so he could only bluster and posture to cover up his discomfort.
“So big already and still can’t ride a horse.”
“Can’t even lift a proper blade.”
“What’s the point of memorizing all this?”
Eventually, in that child’s eyes, he saw pain and hurt.
Despite being so shameless in other things, he couldn’t put down his pride in front of his own son.
It took him nineteen years to finally say to Xiao Heng, “The greatest pride of my life isn’t my military achievements or my noble title, it’s you.”
With Xiao Qing, he would not make the same mistakes again.
He only hoped it wasn’t too late. He hoped the bond between father and son wouldn’t be too short-lived. He still wanted a chance to make up for everything they had lost over the years.
“Your… shoulder injury. Is it alright now?” Shangguan Qing asked with a calm expression.
Cold-faced but warm-hearted, just like the Ah Heng of later years.
Marquis Xuanping swore to be a benevolent father, but unfortunately, his seriousness lasted barely three seconds.
The moment he heard his son showing concern, he twitched his shoulder, drew a sharp breath, clutched his wound, and bent over in agony.
Shangguan Qing had completely exposed his own character and identity, yet he remained unaware of the conduct and character of his own biological father.
His expression changed instantly. “Hey, hey, hey! What’s wrong with you now?!”
Marquis Xuanping put on a face full of pain and groaned, “It hurts so much… that dagger was poisoned… I fear I’m… not going to make it… but if you called me ‘father’… I might just… be saved…”
Shangguan Qing’s face was covered in dark lines: “…”
Soon it was dinnertime, and to make it easier for Shangguan Qing to rest, the meal was served right in his room.
The table was set with all his favorite dishes, and no fennel.
As he shoveled food into his bowl, his eyes drifted between the two people on either side of him, his father and mother.
All these years, there had only ever been him and his mother at the dining table. He had never thought much of it.
But thinking back on it now… the imperial mausoleum had actually been quite cold and lonely.
……
The situation in Pucheng gradually stabilized, and with no need for heavy troops to remain stationed there, Shangguan Yan redirected the main forces to the border to launch an offensive against the State of Jin.
In just three days, the State of Yan successfully captured the first border city of the State of Jin, forcing the Jin army to retreat to Xicheng.
The vanguard troops tasked with attacking Xicheng consisted of the Shadow Division and the Black Wind Cavalry.
Shortly after the hour of youshi(5-7 pm) passed, Gu Jiao gave the order to launch the first assault on Xicheng.
As usual, they made full use of the State of Liang’s siege chariots and ladders. The soldiers charged at the gates with all they had, battering the walls and climbing the towers. One fell, and another took his place.
The sky above Xicheng was dyed blood-red.
“Jin bastards! Give your lives to Grandpa!” Tang Yueshan roared as he charged straight to the base of the wall.

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
