Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)
Ye Qing was already aware that Shangguan Qing had come to Ghost Mountain. He also vaguely suspected the nature of the relationship between the general appointed by the Crown Princess and the Eldest Imperial Grandson. Not for any specific reason, but simply because of the uncanny resemblance between the two faces.
And of course, there was also the way the Crown Princess looked at him when she let her guard down.
Ye Qing hesitated for a moment before sighing. “It’s true, my master said it himself. His Highness the Eldest Imperial Grandson was poisoned with an extremely lethal toxin. Being able to suppress it for twenty years was already pushing the absolute limit. There’s no way he can hold out any longer.”
It was now the tenth month, leaving just two months before the full twenty years were up.
Marquis Xuanping asked, “Is it that precise? Right down to his birthday?”
Ye Qing shook his head. “Not exactly, there’s a margin of error… but the onset will come early, not late.”
That last sentence hit Marquis Xuanping like a bucket of ice water, chilling him to the bone.
Still clinging to a final shred of hope, Marquis Xuanping said, “But he looks no different from a normal person…”
He didn’t seem like someone on the verge of death from poisoning.
Ye Qing sighed. “That’s because my master’s pills have been suppressing the toxin all this time. When the moment comes, he won’t feel much pain.”
, Ye Qing wasn’t joking around. The Eldest Imperial Grandson’s condition was truly beyond saving.
Marquis Xuanping’s gaze turned to Gu Jiao’s face. “Do you have any way?”
Gu Jiao replied, “I’m not skilled at detoxification. A few days ago, I sent a message by carrier pigeon to Shengdu. Lady Nan should be sending a reply soon.”
Speak of the devil, and he shall appear.
A scout from the Black Wind Army came over, holding a carrier pigeon captured in Quyang City. “Young Commander, there’s a carrier pigeon from Shengdu!”
“Bring it in.” Gu Jiao said.
The scout handed over the pigeon. Gu Jiao untied the note from its leg and passed the bird back to the scout to take away.
After reading the note, Gu Jiao lowered her eyes. “Lady Nan says… she can’t cure this poison.”
Ye Qing asked, “The Lady Nan you mentioned is from the Tang Sect, isn’t she?”
Gu Jiao said, “Exactly.”
Ye Qing let out a sigh. “Then it really can’t be cured. My master once personally went to the Tang Sect to seek a remedy, but he came back empty-handed.”
A poison that even the Tang Sect couldn’t neutralize was essentially beyond hope.
Gu Jiao frowned. “Could it be… that there truly is no way?”
She looked toward the cluttered table, filled with all sorts of bottles and jars. One of them was a bottle of anti-inflammatory medicine she had just taken from her little medicine chest, prepared for Xuanyuan Qi.
Suddenly, a flash of inspiration struck her mind, “Purple her poison!”
Ye Qing was taken aback.
Gu Jiao, deep in thought, said, “Purple herb poison is the deadliest toxin in the world. Of those who ingest it, most end up dead when the poison activates. But if one manages to survive it, then all wounds and illnesses will miraculously heal without medicine.”
Ye Qing’s expression turned grave. “But… to this day… not a single person with a weak constitution has ever survived it.”
Take Fifth Master Han, for example. His body was not weak to begin with, as he practiced martial arts.
And Xuanyuan Qi, even more so.
They both possessed exceptionally strong physiques, which gave them a higher survival rate than ordinary people.
But the Eldest Imperial Grandson was different; his body couldn’t endure it.
Gu Jiao said, “How would we know it won’t work unless we try? If that day really comes and there’s still no other cure in sight, then purple herb poison will be our only hope.”
“I agree.” Marquis Xuanping said.
“You two…” Ye Qing was at a loss for words. The toxicity of the purple herb was too overwhelming; not just anyone could survive it.
What was more——
“We don’t even have any purple herb poison left.”
The last bottle of purple herb poison had already been used. Ye Qing had made the decision himself to give it to Xuanyuan Qi.
Gu Jiao stood up. “The Han Family has a purple herb field! Advisor Hu! Send someone to the prison and drag Third Master Han here for me!”
Among the Han Family members, it was that good-for-nothing Third Master who was the most spineless.
The Han Family had already been imprisoned in Quyang City’s dungeon. Advisor Hu acted swiftly, and not long after, Third Master Han was dragged over.
As expected, he was easily frightened. Gu Jiao hadn’t even begun to interrogate him when he confessed everything in a single breath.
“Purple herb… Purple herb… is it that grass that has no smell, no color… but will kill you if you eat it…?”
He knelt on the ground, trembling uncontrollably with fear.
Marquis Xuanping’s gaze was icy, and Gu Jiao radiated murderous intent. The very air he breathed seemed to choke him into stuttering.
Ye Qing took up brush and paper and drew a sketch of the purple herb. Third Master Han was so dim-witted that he didn’t recognize it just from the outline.
Ye Qing then added color to the sketch, and only then did Third Master Han finally come to a sudden realization, “I’ve seen that! I’ve seen that before!”
He stammered nervously, “Our… our Han Family discovered a patch of purple herbs in Niu County… so we fenced it off and built an estate around it… But but but… but the estate is gone now… and the purple herbs inside… might… might be gone too…”
Ye Qing’s expression changed. “What did you say?”
Third Master Han choked back sobs and said, “The estate was burned down… right when we were about to lose the war… my eldest brother said… said something like… he didn’t want the Black Cavalry to fall into your hands… so… so he sent people to the estate and destroyed the entire purple herb field!”
His words struck everyone in the tent like a bolt from the blue.
Just when they had finally seen a glimmer of hope to save Shangguan Qing, the Han Family had personally destroyed their one and only chance.
Marquis Xuanping’s face turned terrifyingly cold.
The murderous aura emanating from him seemed to fill the entire tent.
Third Master Han was so overwhelmed by this dreadful pressure that he fainted on the spot.
Marquis Xuanping was not someone who lost his temper easily, but at this moment, he crushed the cup in his hand with sheer force. The shattered porcelain shards pierced into his palm.
He couldn’t tell whether the pain in his hand or the pain in his heart was worse.
He had only just been reunited with his son after twenty years, only to face the fact that his life now had no more than two months left.
Outside the tent, Chang Jing remained unaware of what had just taken place inside. He had just arrived from Pucheng.
He had beaten Zhu Zhangkuang until the man was crying for his mother and swearing oaths that he would never reveal his identity.
The girls at the Soft Fragrance Pavilion had once said that a man’s mouth was nothing but a liar’s tool.
He wasn’t that easy to fool, so he had forced Zhu Zhangkuang to swallow poison. If Zhu Zhangkuang dared to betray him, he would die the moment the poison took effect.
Zhu Zhangkuang instantly became obedient.
His secret identity was safe, and he no longer had to worry about being dragged back to Hidden Night Island.
Chang Jing was thrilled!
But when he walked in, he noticed that everyone else looked grim and cheerless.
If he didn’t understand something, he could just ask.
And so he did, “What’s wrong with all of you?”
Marquis Xuanping was so furious he couldn’t speak, and Gu Jiao remained silent as well.
It was Ye Qing, the usually gentle and patient senior disciple of the Imperial Advisor’s Hall, who finally opened his mouth with a helpless tone, “We’re looking for a kind of herb, but unfortunately, it can’t be found anymore.”
“What kind of herb?” Chang Jing’s gaze fell onto the drawing in Ye Qing’s hand. “This one? Isn’t this the kind of herb you can find everywhere?”
Ye Qing choked, “E-everywhere?”
Chang Jing said matter-of-factly, “There’s a ton of it on the back mountain behind my house. It's all over the hillside.”
Everyone turned to look at him in unison!
He had just survived the crisis of having his secret identity exposed, but an ominous premonition suddenly surged within Chang Jing’s heart at this moment——

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
