In the borderlands during the eleventh month, the cold wind howled with a piercing chill.

That night, Shangguan Yan arrived from Pucheng and went straight to the military camp.

It was only after entering the city that she learned the Eldest Imperial Grandson had come as well. Based on her understanding of her two sons, she guessed correctly that one must have come to find his future bride, and the other to find his younger brother. Chances were, they were both in the camp.

As expected, she found Gu Jiao together with her two sons inside the tent of Marquis Xuanping.

Shangguan Qing had already fallen asleep, while Gu Jiao was administering an intravenous infusion for him.

He hadn’t had much of an appetite these days, and Gu Jiao would give him nutritional infusions from time to time.

But tonight, there was something unusually heavy about the atmosphere in the tent.

Shangguan Yan’s expression changed at once. “What’s wrong? Did something happen? Is Qing’er doing worse?”

Shangguan Qing’s condition had never been good to begin with. He had been relying on medicine from the Imperial Advisor's Hall to suppress the poison in his body, allowing him to appear no different from a healthy person. In reality, his body was long since burned out, running on the last flickers of life.

Ye Qing had said he wouldn’t suffer too much, he would simply grow sleepier and sleepier, until one day he drifted off and never woke up again.

Xiao Heng then told Shangguan Yan what Shangguan Qing had decided.

Shangguan Yan sank into a chair in a daze. “He… he really made up his mind?”

To go to the State of Zhao.

That would mean he had completely given up on the antidote.

The journey to the State of Zhao was long and arduous, and no one could guarantee he wouldn’t collapse from the poison midway.

If the poison flared up while he was en route, wouldn’t that entire journey be in vain?

The mere thought of her son dying alone on the road back to the State of Zhao made Shangguan Yan feel like her heart was being torn apart.

She couldn’t bear the idea of not even being able to see her son one last time!

“Ah Heng… I can’t let him go…”

In that moment, she was no longer the iron-blooded Crown Princess. She was simply an ordinary mother.

But at the same time, she also understood that she had no right to stop Shangguan Qing from going to see Princess Xinyang.

“The Marquis, along with Chang Jing and Ye Qing, went north. From what I’ve gathered, Hidden Night Island lies in that direction. If the route had been easy, they would have brought Shangguan Qing along. The fact that they didn’t means this journey is one of near-certain death.”

The far northern region was plagued by extreme weather, blizzards raged across the frozen plains, and once the harsh winter truly arrived, even elite martial experts would find it impossible to pass through.

It was perhaps only after fully understanding this that Shangguan Qing had made peace with giving up on waiting for the purple herb.

He wanted to use the last stretch of his life to make one final journey to his homeland, to see his country once more.

To see his mother, one last time.

With a choked voice, Shangguan Yan murmured, “All those years ago, I took him away without even asking him if he agreed…”

Now, he had grown up.

He hadn’t been able to choose how he came into this world, nor the life he had to live, but now, he wished to choose how he would leave it.

Whether to live or to die, that choice should belong to him.

Even if he took the purple herb, the odds of survival were only one in ten thousand. If it failed, he would never return alive.

Whether he chose to gamble on that one in ten thousand chance, or to spend what remained of his life to see his mother, it was a choice only he had the right to make.

Inside the tent, Shangguan Yan clutched her son’s hand and wept through the entire night.

……

The winter in the State of Zhao was especially harsh this year. As early as the latter days of the tenth month, the first snow had already begun to fall in the capital, and by the eleventh month, it had snowed for a full half month without stopping.

Once the twelfth month arrived, there were finally a few days of clear weather.

In a quiet residence on Zhuque Street, Princess Xinyang sat serenely at her bedside, working on embroidery.

In the past, her desk held only writing brushes, ink, and paper. But at some point, they had all been replaced by various types of fabric.

Finding the room a bit stifling, she called for Yu Jin to come and open the window panels.

But instead, it was a young servant girl who entered.

The servant girl entered with a smile. “Sister Yu Jin went out, Princess. Is there something you need?”

“Open the window.” Princess Xinyang said.

“But it’s very cold outside.” The servant girl said with concern for her health.

Princess Xinyang said calmly, “I’m feeling hot.”

“Then… just open it for a little while.” The servant girl replied.

“Mm.” Princess Xinyang nodded.

The servant girl circled around the table and used the support rod to prop open the window lattice.

A gust of cold wind swept in, carrying fluttering snowflakes, and Princess Xinyang felt a refreshing chill that cleared her groggy mind considerably.

The servant girl shivered.

So cold!

And it was snowing again!

Princess Xinyang continued her embroidery in the cold breeze for a while, but the servant girl, not daring to let her be exposed to the wind for long, mustered her courage. Despite risking being scolded or even thrown out, she lowered the window.

“Sister Yu Jin said you mustn’t be exposed to cold wind, can’t eat cold things, can’t…” the servant girl trailed off, lowering her head with a lack of confidence.

“Enough, I’m not going to punish you.” Princess Xinyang said, not intending to make an issue of it with a mere servant girl. But after sitting inside the room for an hour, she was indeed starting to feel restless.

“Bring me my cloak. I’m going out for a walk.” She said.

“Ah, yes.” the servant girl answered, startled and nervous. She fetched the cloak and carefully draped it over Princess Xinyang’s shoulders.

Princess Xinyang rose, her swollen legs heavy beneath her, and stepped out of the room into the corridor.

The snow in the courtyard had been meticulously cleared, and the ground was lined with anti-slip grass mats.

The servant girl held up an umbrella over her.

“Let’s go look at the greenhouse.” Princess Xinyang said.

“Yes.” the servant girl responded, cautiously supporting her along the way.

Master and servant made their way to the greenhouse.

The residence had originally been quite spacious, and since Princess Xinyang enjoyed tending flowers, she had converted nearly half the estate into a flower conservatory.

Inside, charcoal braziers were burning, and the temperature was noticeably warmer.

The servant girl knew her princess hadn’t come to admire the flowers but wanted to check if the old clothes from long ago had dried properly by the fire.

Just as the two of them reached the door of the greenhouse, they heard the sound of hushed whispering from inside.

“What do you think the princess is thinking? Why did she suddenly dig up all those old clothes from years ago? And she even asked us to wash and air them?”

“Keep your voice down, don’t let anyone hear!”

“So what if they do? You think I’m the only one saying this? Everyone’s been talking in private!”

“Talking about what?”

“The princess… actually had two sons!”

“What?”

“Half of those children’s clothes belonged to the Little Marquis, and the other half were for another young master. It’s just that poor child had terrible luck, born prematurely, and died not long after birth! I mean, it’s one thing for us to wash the Little Marquis’s clothes, but why are we washing clothes for a dead child? Washing a dead person’s clothes during the New Year season, it’s bad luck!”

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
