The moon was bright and the stars sparse.
The empty streets were silent and cold.
Two carriages rolled slowly into the long-deserted street, with Gu Jiao riding the Black Wind King alongside the mounted Xuanyuan Qi and Liao Chen on either side.
The group arrived at a once-grand residence that had long since fallen into ruin.
Shangguan Yan and Duke An descended from their carriages one after the other.
Gu Jiao and the Xuanyuan father and son dismounted their horses as well.
Gu Jiao stepped behind Duke An and pushed his wheelchair forward.
With a solemn expression, Shangguan Yan ordered, “Someone, tear off the seals on the door and cut through the iron chains.”
"Yes, Your Majesty!" The imperial guards accompanying them stepped forward. Following the order, they tore off the seals and cut through the iron chains.
The grand gates, sealed and untouched for many years, were finally opened. The heavy creak of the door echoed deep in everyone’s hearts, though it lasted only a brief moment, it felt as if an entire century had passed.
The residence was still the same one it had always been, yet everything had changed. The people who once lived here could never be seen again.
Though Liao Chen had done a rough job clearing the overgrown weeds, the air of desolation and decay remained impossible to conceal.
Xuanyuan Qi walked up the steps with heavy footsteps. As he gazed into the silent, dilapidated courtyard, his eyes suddenly reddened. "Elder brother... I've come home..."
Liao Chen had already visited the residence in secret once before. He had grieved as much as he could back then. But now, returning alongside his father, he realized how shallow that earlier sorrow had been.
In this moment, he truly experienced what it meant to feel the devastation of a home lost and a family destroyed.
It was sorrow that came from his father.
Shangguan Yan’s eyes shimmered with moisture. She sniffled softly and said to Gu Jiao and Duke An, “Let’s go inside.”
The servants laid wooden planks across the steps, and Gu Jiao pushed the wheelchair up.
Black Wind King followed them in as well.
The last time it had played in this courtyard, it was still a carefree little colt.
Now, it had grown old.
Shangguan Yan began introducing the grounds to Gu Jiao, “This is the training ground. Back then, both uncles used to spar here often, and the older and younger cousins also practiced martial arts in this very spot.”
"That’s eldest uncle’s courtyard over there, and the eastern side is second uncle’s courtyard."
"Behind that pavilion is eldest cousin’s courtyard. Heading north, you’ll find second cousin’s, then third cousin’s, and then Little Fourth and Little Fifth’s courtyards."
She gave a thorough and detailed introduction.
Gu Jiao listened attentively.
There was a sense of familiarity about this residence to her.
According to Duke An, when Jing Yinyin was young, her maternal grandfather often spirited her away. Xuanyuan Zi would wake up from sleep to find his daughter missing and would storm back to her parental home with a dark face to retrieve her.
“Would you like to visit Little Sixth’s courtyard?” Shangguan Yan asked.
“Yes.” Gu Jiao nodded.
The group made their way to Xuanyuan Sun’s courtyard.
Looking at the courtyard now overrun with weeds, Shangguan Yan gave a bitter smile. “Little Sixth always said he was the most useless one. Yet he was the only one who escaped from the claws of those pursuing us all. He preserved the last trace of eldest uncle’s bloodline. He accomplished something truly remarkable.”
“By the way, how did Xuanyuan Sun escape back then?” Gu Jiao turned to ask Liao Chen. The two of them had never really discussed the details about Xuanyuan Sun before.
Liao Chen replied, “It was Han Ci. At the time, all the men of the Xuanyuan Family had gone off to war. Because of his poor health, sixth brother stayed behind in Shengdu. Members of the Han Family came to kill him, but Han Ci pretended to kill him before they could, deceiving the Han Family. He then secretly smuggled him out of Shengdu.”
Suddenly it all made sense to Gu Jiao. “No wonder you spared Han Ci.”
Liao Chen said, “Little Sixth owed him his life. I repaid that debt on his behalf. I didn’t want Little Sixth to carry that burden.”
“What happened afterward?” Gu Jiao asked.
Liao Chen’s voice softened as he fell into memory, tinged with a trace of sorrow. “I once secretly returned to the State of Yan. Partly to inquire about my father, and partly… because I wanted to see the Xuanyuan Family again. I even visited the vanguard camp and saw the newborn Ah Yue. No one noticed my presence, except Little Sixth.”
“I revealed my identity to Little Sixth and gave him a token of the Shadow Division. After he escaped the Han Family’s clutches, he used the token to contact Shadow Division members near Shengdu, who then escorted him all the way to the State of Zhao.”
“He settled down near the temple where I lived. A few years later, he met a woman and married her. Unfortunately, his body remained frail, and the deep-seated hatred he carried for the Xuanyuan Family’s fate only worsened his condition. Not long after Jing Kong was born, he passed away. Soon after, I found Jing Kong, still in swaddling clothes, left at the temple gate. I knew then he was Little Sixth’s child. I sensed something was wrong and immediately went to look for my sixth sister-in-law, but by then, she had already vanished.”
“I searched everywhere, but never found any trace of her. Eventually, I found one of her shoes by the riverbank. I think… she must have thrown herself into the lake.”
At these words, everyone fell into silence.
They mourned for Xuanyuan Sun, and for his wife as well.
And for that poor, helpless child.
Xuanyuan Qi said, “I want to go to the State of Zhao… and meet Little Sixth’s child.”
Gu Jiao turned to Liao Chen and said, “When I first suspected that both you and Jing Kong had ties to the Xuanyuan Family, I actually thought he might be your son. Later, I kept going back to the Imperial Advisor's Hall to study the portrait of Xuanyuan Sun… and I realized the two of them looked even more alike.”
Liao Chen sneered, “Heh, I’m a monk.”
How could he possibly break the precept of abstaining from lust?
Gu Jiao nodded and replied, “Mm, a monk who’s already broken the precepts against killing and consuming meat and alcohol.”
Was the precept of celibacy really that far off?
Liao Chen: “…”
Xuanyuan Qi turned to look at his son. After undergoing several months of training at the border, he had grown much better at conversing and interacting with others.
He spoke with heartfelt sincerity, “Zheng’er, you’re not young anymore. In the past, you carried the immense blood feud of the Xuanyuan Family, your life uncertain, and couldn’t settle down or start a family. But now that everything has come to an end, it’s time for you to start thinking about your future. Is there a girl you’re fond of? If there is, I’ll go and propose on your behalf. Her family background doesn’t matter to me, so long as she comes from a decent household, has a kind and pure heart, good morals, and a pleasant appearance, that’s all I ask.”
Liao Chen raised his hand to his forehead in exasperation.
How had the conversation veered so completely off course?
Weren’t they just talking about Little Sixth and Jing Kong?
How did it suddenly turn into him being urged to get married?
Liao Chen sighed and said, “Father, I don’t have anyone in mind, and I don’t plan on getting married. With Jing Kong around, the Xuanyuan Family already has someone to carry on the line. Let that boy inherit the family business, I just want to live freely on my own. Besides, I’m already this old. Those my age already have flocks of children. And the ones still unmarried, marrying one would feel like raising a daughter. And yet you still have such high standards.”
Xuanyuan Qi had been reclusive for far too long and was unaware of the average male standards in Shengdu.
He thought seriously about his son’s “market value” and realized, to his dismay, that his son might actually have a point.
Gritting his teeth, he harshly lowered his expectations for a daughter-in-law. “Then… as long as she’s human, that’s fine!”
Liao Chen: “???”

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
