When Xiao Heng and Gu Yan had returned home, they had told her many things about the State of Yan, but the focus had always been on Gu Jiao.

Gu Jiao explained, “It’s a long story. Xuanyuan shizi is not only Jing Kong’s uncle, but also his master. Back then, they both took monastic vows in that temple.”

Yao shi finally understood. “Ah, so that’s how it is.”

A dignified heir of a powerful kingdom, actually going to a small country to be a monk. There must have been many untold stories behind it. Yao shi understood this in her heart but did not press for details in this setting.

Not long after the four of them had sat down, three little boys came back carrying baskets.

“JiaoJiao!”

Little Jing Kong was the first to step over the threshold, and the moment he saw Gu Jiao in the main hall, his eyes lit up.

Holding his small basket, he dashed over with rapid little footsteps and threw himself into Gu Jiao’s arms. “JiaoJiao! JiaoJiao! You’re finally back! I missed you so much!”

Xuanyuan Qi sat diagonally across from Gu Jiao. From the first time Little Jing Kong shouted “JiaoJiao,” his eyes were drawn to him.

*So this is Little Sixth’s child?*

His voice was so crisp and sweet.

Xuanyuan Qi’s spirit, like a withered tree suddenly revived, lit up as he stared at Little Jing Kong.

But Little Jing Kong had eyes only for Gu Jiao. He didn’t even notice him, nor did he notice Liao Chen sitting nearby.

Liao Chen’s mouth twitched.

You little rascal… I’ve been your master for so long, and you don’t even spare me a glance?

“JiaoJiao, did you miss me?” Little Jing Kong said, acting spoiled.

“I missed you.” Gu Jiao said.

Only then did Little Jing Kong feel somewhat satisfied. He lifted his head a little and greeted Yao shi and Gu Xiaobao at the side. “Benefactor Yao, Xiaobao.”

At that moment, Gu Xiaoshun and Gu Yan also came into the house.

“Big sis!”

“Sister!”

The two of them shouted almost in unison, clearly not expecting to see Gu Jiao at home.

They each pinched the other hard, the pain sharp enough to confirm that they weren’t dreaming, that JiaoJiao had truly come back!

Unlike the little monk, they immediately noticed the guests sitting inside the room.

Yao shi smiled and introduced them. “This is Jing Kong’s granduncle, Supreme Commander Xuanyuan. And the other one… is the young master of the Supreme Commander Estate. You may call him Xuanyuan shizi.”

The two of them had never met Liao Chen in the State of Yan, let alone Xuanyuan Qi, who commanded the border.

But they certainly knew of the Xuanyuan Family, and to think that even the mighty Supreme Commander of the Xuanyuan Family had come to their home!

The two boys turned to look at Xuanyuan Qi, who sat there like a towering mountain, and they could almost feel the invincible aura of iron cavalry and battlefield might radiating from him.

Gu Yan: “Wow!”

Gu Xiaoshun: “Wow!”

Gu Xiaobao echoed, “Wow!”

“Jing Kong, your master is here.” Gu Jiao reminded Little Jing Kong, who was sprawled in her arms, unwilling to get up.

“My master isn’t here.” Little Jing Kong muttered, pouting and refusing to turn his head. “He’s so lazy. How could he possibly come?”

No sooner had the words left his mouth than a long, slender hand reached over and lifted him up, and a voice, dangerously low, said, “Who are you calling lazy?”

Gu Xiaobao: “Lazy.”

Little Jing Kong’s eyes spun as he looked at Liao Chen. “Xiaobao’s lazy.”

Gu Xiaobao: “Xiaobao’s lazy…”

After mimicking him, he belatedly waved his little hand and emphasized with great seriousness, “Xiaobao’s not lazy.”

Yao shi lowered her head to look at the son in her arms and gently guided him to speak. “Xiaobao isn’t lazy. Then what is Xiaobao?”

Gu Xiaobao spread his five tiny fingers, patted his small chest with a sense of pride, and said, “Xiaobao is smart.”

The whole room instantly burst into laughter at his adorable declaration.

Gu Jiao stared at Gu Xiaobao with curiosity. “You can already talk so well now. When I left, Xiaobao could only cry and wail.”

Yao shi smiled softly. “He’s a year and eight months old now.”

He had been a late walker, only willing to stand on his own at one year and two months, and it was just last month that he truly dared to walk freely.

But when it came to talking, he was indeed early; he had called her ‘Mom’ for the very first time at just eleven months old. She remembered that both Yan’er and Jinyu only started speaking after they were a full year old.

Yet… she did not know about JiaoJiao…

The thought that her daughter had grown up in the countryside, while she herself had known nothing about her growth, filled Yao shi with guilt and a dull ache in her heart.

Little Jing Kong drooped his small head in utter despair. “Master, can you put me down already? My head is spinning from all your shaking.”

“When did I ever shake you?” His master was holding him steadily; he hadn’t even moved.

Little Jing Kong spread his tiny hands and sighed dramatically. “Ah, Master, you’re just too handsome. Of course, I got dizzy from your beauty!”

Liao Chen: “…”

Everyone else: “…”

Yao shi knew that Xuanyuan Qi and his son wanted to acknowledge their kinship with Jing Kong. She carried Gu Xiaobao as she stood up and said to the two men, “I’ll go take a look in the kitchen.”

After speaking, she gave Gu Xiaoshun and Gu Yan a subtle look.

“We’ll go too.” Gu Yan immediately understood her meaning and pulled along Gu Xiaoshun, who was still in awe of the Supreme Commander, heading toward the backyard.

“Yuanyang, you come as well.” Yao shi called to the servant girl.

“Yes, Madame.”

Yuanyang put down the sliced fruits and followed Yao shi out of the main hall.

The previously lively room instantly fell into silence.

Before they arrived, Xuanyuan Qi had already discussed the matter of recognizing Little Jing Kong with Gu Jiao and Liao Chen.

Between hiding the truth from him or telling him outright, the three unanimously chose the latter.

Jing Kong was not an ordinary child. He was precocious, clever, and exceptionally intelligent, yet at the same time, he carried a heart that was painfully sensitive.

From birth to three years old, he had been abandoned more than once.

Gu Jiao still remembered that when she first met and spoke with him, he had already packed up his little bundle, ready to leave the mountain to be adopted, only for that family to change their minds and reject him again.

Even now, whenever she recalled the small, lonely figure sitting on that stone bench, she could still feel the quiet desolation that surrounded Little Jing Kong.

He had even believed that his own parents had cast him aside because they did not like him.

After Gu Jiao took him home, he often revealed his cautious little heart, fearing that he would become a burden to her, and fearing that he would be sent away again…

At his tender age, he had endured things that no child ever should.

He needed to understand that he had parents who loved him dearly, that he had been born into a world where his parents had awaited him with joy and hope.

He had never truly been abandoned.

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
