Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)
Gu Jiao took out her little notebook, and with quick, flowing strokes of her pen, she wrote down some words and showed it to Old Marquis: ‘Brother, is your throat feeling uncomfortable?’
Old Marquis glanced at the note and nearly exploded on the spot in outrage.
What brother!
Your disguise had long been blown, all right!
Thick-skinned Jiao: As long as I refuse to acknowledge it, then it means my cover has not been blown.
Gu Changqing, rarely seeing his grandfather take a blow like this, couldn’t help the faint upward curve of his lips, and he said to Gu Jiao, “Are you only here to see your adoptive father?”
Gu Jiao thought for a moment and replied, “General Xuanyuan already had dinner with me last night… well, I suppose it won’t hurt to see him again.”
Gu Changqing shot a glance at his grandfather, whose expression was now as dark as iron, and asked his younger sister, “And who else?”
Gu Jiao’s eyes rolled in a quick, sly turn. “Hmm… Liao Chen?”
“Humph!”
Old Marquis gave an angry, huffy snort and walked away without so much as turning his head.
Gu Changqing watched his grandfather’s back as he strode off in a fit of anger and said, “Grandfather, since you’re already here, why not drop by and pay a visit to Duke An? Didn’t you just promise His Majesty earlier in the palace that you would treat Duke An well?”
Old Marquis’s stride didn’t falter for even a heartbeat; instead, he took a sharp turn and marched straight into the current Duke An Estate.
Gu Changqing’s mouth twitched. That reaction is far too quick… had he just been waiting for me to say that?
As he passed by Gu Jiao, Old Marquis very deliberately cast her a sideways glare.
It was as if his look said: if you’re going to play this game, at least do it properly. You don’t even have the mask, how disappointing!
Steward Zheng greeted Old Marquis and his party with great warmth, cheerfully ushering them into the estate.
Gu Jinyu, however, was left standing all alone outside, so solitary it was as if the entire world had abandoned her.
The way things had unfolded was utterly beyond her expectations, leaving her in a daze for a long time, unable to recover her senses.
The gazes cast upon her by those around were now tinged with an unmistakable strangeness.
They had originally thought it was the other young lady who was unacknowledged by the Marquis Estate, but it turned out she herself was the one who wasn’t recognized; that other girl enjoyed the deep affection of her own blood grandfather and elder brother. As for her, even calling him “Grandfather” earned nothing but the Old Marquis’s dislike.
“Yes, that’s right, I heard the young miss of the Marquis Ding’an Estate was switched at birth with a country girl, and the second young miss is actually the one from the countryside.”
“A pheasant is still a pheasant, even if it perches on a branch, it can never become a phoenix.”
“Exactly! If that young lady truly regarded her as a sister, why wouldn’t she tell her about becoming the adopted daughter of the Duke An Estate?”
“She dares to say anything she pleases, wasn’t she just here to lodge a complaint?”
It wasn’t that men couldn’t see through such tricks, but rather that some men just happened to fall for them.
Steward Zheng turned back and shot Gu Jinyu a cold glare. “Hah, bringing humiliation upon yourself!”
“Young miss… let’s… let’s go…” The servant girl who had hurried over tugged at Gu Jinyu’s sleeve with utmost caution.
Gu Jinyu’s cheeks burned hot, more embarrassed and mortified than she had ever been in her life.
Was it just because she had made Gu Jiao ‘lose face’ in public that her grandfather and eldest brother would also refuse her any way out before everyone’s eyes?
But wasn’t Gu Jiao perfectly fine, not embarrassed in the least?
She was the Duke An Estate’s young miss now, basking in splendor beyond measure!
Only she herself was the pitiable one!
“Young miss, let’s go…” the servant girl urged softly.
Gu Jinyu returned to the Marquis Estate in humiliation.
She no longer cared about taking the jewelry; she was in no mood for it.
She went straight back to her own courtyard.
But she had barely rested for a moment when her personal servant girl came to report that Grannie Fang, who served Madame, had arrived.
Grannie Fang had gone home to visit her family, only returning to Bishui Alley at noon, and she had brought back a bit of information she had unintentionally overheard; upon hearing it, Yao shi had sent her to the Marquis Estate to fetch Gu Jinyu.
At first, Gu Jinyu had no intention of going, but when she thought about Gu Jiao’s identity, her curiosity grew. She wanted to know exactly what had happened with Gu Jiao, and why she had suddenly become the Duke An Estate’s young miss.
She went to Bishui Alley.
Little Gu Xiaobao was still napping.
Yao shi met her in the main hall.
Ever since she had moved into Bishui Alley, Yao shi’s complexion and spirit had improved with each passing day, and now she even looked younger than she had in the past few years.
Gu Jinyu’s face, however, did not look well; she sat down indifferently on the other side of the table.
Yao shi turned her head to look at her. “Jinyu, I asked you to come over today because there’s something I want to tell you.”
Gu Jinyu replied coolly, “What a coincidence, I also have something to say to Mother.”
In the past, she had always called her “Mom.”
Grannie Fang disliked this sort of attitude. No matter how cold or indifferent the eldest young miss might be, she had never before shown a sour face to Madame.
Yao shi, however, paid no mind to her manner; when one no longer held expectations in their heart, there could be no disappointment.
Yao shi said, “Very well, you go first.”
Gu Jinyu said coldly, “I heard that my elder sister has become the young miss of Duke An Estate. This is such an important matter, why did Mother hide it from me?”
Yao shi did not ask how she had learned of it and simply looked at her and said, “You have no concern for JiaoJiao, so I saw no need to tell you these things.”
Yao shi’s firm tone startled Gu Jinyu for a moment, after which she felt both wronged and angry.
When someone’s kindness toward you became a habit, the moment they were not kind, it felt like a crime.
“Heh.” Gu Jinyu gave a cold laugh. “Yes, I don’t care about her, I’m heartless and ungrateful. But has she ever cared about me? Is Mother’s standard only applied to me?”
Yao shi said, “I have no demands of either of you; you are under no obligation to care for one another. But if you don’t care for her, then do not go prying into her affairs. After all, JiaoJiao has never gone prying into yours.”
Gu Jinyu clenched her fingers sharply. “Mother!”
Yao shi said calmly, “Have you finished speaking? Then it’s my turn. Jinyu, I have raised you for more than ten years. Whether or not you still acknowledge me as your mother, I wish to give you one final piece of advice, the third son of Marquis Changping is not a good match. You had best end this engagement early.”
Gu Jinyu sneered. “Not a good match? Then who would be? The son of some lowly Imperial Gate Attendant that Mother painstakingly picked out for me? Your biological daughter can marry the noble Little Marquis, but I can only demean myself by marrying the son of a mere palace attendant? Mother, just how biased are you?”
Yao shi looked at her coldly. “And is the Marquis not biased? When you accuse me of favoritism, why don’t you think about how your father has always favored you?”
Gu Jinyu raised her hand and pointed toward the inner courtyard. “But Grandfather and my elder brothers are all biased toward her! Even that stupid Gu Xiaobao likes her more——”
Smack!
Yao shi shot to her feet and slapped her hard on the face across the table.
Gu Jinyu’s head rang from the blow as she looked at Yao shi in disbelief.
“Do not speak of your younger brother like that!”
“He’s not my younger brother! He can fall and injure himself without even crying, and at over a year old still won’t walk. If that’s not a fool, then what is?”
Gu Xiaobao had been awakened by the noise.
He sat up very obediently, staring blankly toward the doorway.
Yao shi pointed toward the door; her voice was not loud, but her tone was unyieldingly stern. “Get out.”
Covering her stinging, reddened cheek, Gu Jinyu shot Yao shi a glare with reddened eyes, then left without looking back!

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
