After Yuan Baolin returned to her boudoir, her younger sister Yuan Tong came in.

Her sister held onto her arm and whispered, “Elder sister, did you really agree to this marriage?”

Yuan Baolin withdrew her hand, lay down leisurely on the couch, and flipped open the book she had been halfway through reading. “Mm.”

Her sister sat down beside her in surprise. “But elder sister, didn’t you say you would never marry in this lifetime?”

Yuan Baolin sighed. “Grandmother threatened me with her life. What choice do I have?”

Yuan Tong made a small sound of acknowledgement, twisted her handkerchief, and said, “But speaking of which, he really did find a phoenix bird for you. That shows he is serious about you.”

Yuan Baolin turned another page of the book and replied flatly, “It wasn’t him who found it.”

Yuan Tong frowned in confusion. “How does elder sister know it wasn’t him?”

Yuan Baolin answered calmly, “I just know.”

Yuan Tong knitted her brows, stood up, and said, “Then I’ll go tell Grandfather!”

“Wait.” Yuan Baolin put down the book, looked at her, and said lightly, “Don’t ruin this marriage. I’m going to marry him.”

Yuan Tong frowned. “Elder sister! There are plenty of good men in this world. Why choose a man who isn’t honest?”

Yuan Baolin said helplessly, “You don’t understand.”

Yuan Tong pouted, twisting her handkerchief. “I don’t understand, it’s true. I only know that once elder sister marries, it’ll be my turn next. After that, the Yuan Family will only be our maiden home. We won’t be able to see Father and Mother every day, and I won’t be able to sit here and talk with you like this anymore.”

Yuan Baolin returned to reading her novel.

Suddenly, a thought struck Yuan Tong, and she gasped. “If elder sister marries Gu shizi, doesn’t that mean I’ll become relatives with that… hornet?”

Yuan Baolin looked up. “What hornet?”

Yuan Tong stomped her foot. “His younger brother! That rude and annoying brat!”

Yuan Baolin flipped another page. “Oh, does such a person exist? I forgot.”

Gu Chengfeng, who was completely forgotten by his future sister-in-law: “…”

……

After leaving the palace, Gu Jiao made a stop at Zhuque Street to visit Princess Xinyang and Shangguan Qing.

Shangguan Qing was recovering well. The residual poison in his body had almost been purged. After one more month, he should be able to stop taking medication completely. As long as he paid more attention to his diet in the future, there should be no major problems.

The three of them sat inside Princess Xinyang’s room. Gu Jiao glanced casually around.

Princess Xinyang said indifferently, “Stop looking. Ah Heng isn’t here.”

Shangguan Qing, seated on the right of his princess mother, lifted a book from the table to cover the left side of his face. In a low voice, he told Gu Jiao, “He knew you were coming, so he deliberately made himself scarce. He doesn’t want you two meeting before the wedding.”

Gu Jiao pulled a resentful face. Oh.

Out in the courtyard, Yu Ya’er was holding the sleeping Gu Xiaobao to enjoy the evening cool, while Yu Jin fanned the boy.

Little Yiyi was still awake, lying alone in her cradle, playing with her toes, letting out little hums and babbles from time to time.

She was a baby with an extremely strong presence. As long as she was awake, she would not stay quiet, almost the complete opposite of Gu Xiaobao, who was too lazy even to cry.

When Yao shi gave birth to Gu Xiaobao, the household was as if no child had been born.

When Princess Xinyang gave birth to Little Yiyi, the household was as if twins had been born.

Gu Jiao went over to the cradle to tease her.

Little Yiyi stopped grabbing her toes, widened her gem-like eyes, and stared unblinkingly at Gu Jiao.

She was about to grow her first tooth, and lately she drooled quite a lot.

Gu Jiao remembered that when Gu Xiaobao was five months old, he wasn’t this chubby. Little Yiyi’s tiny arms were like plump lotus roots, fair and tender, and made one want to pinch them.

“Can I pinch her?” Gu Jiao asked Shangguan Qing, who had also come to the cradle.

Shangguan Qing said sternly, “Of course not! A child’s skin is delicate. What if you hurt her?”

After saying this, he cast a glance at his princess mother sitting at the tea table, then quickly blocked her line of sight with his body, leaned down, and whispered to Gu Jiao, “Go ahead and pinch.”

Little Yiyi, who was suddenly sold out by her elder brother: “...?!”

Gu Jiao pinched and pinched again.

“Mmm, it feels so nice to the touch.”

Little Yiyi was a lively baby, quick to laugh and just as quick to cry. Normally, if her elder brothers pinched her like this, she would have burst into loud wails and tattled straight to her mother.

But today, she gave her sister-in-law plenty of face.

After Gu Jiao finished pinching her little arms, Yiyi raised her chubby little feet high up in the air, as if asking:

Here, JioJio for you, are you going to pinch them or not?

With the two people keeping Yiyi entertained, Princess Xinyang went off to take care of her own matters.

When only the two of them were left in the room, Shangguan Qing asked Gu Jiao, “By the way, how is my mother doing?”

Gu Jiao paused in pinching Yiyi’s hand, turned her head, and looked at him strangely. “Why didn’t you ask earlier?”

Shangguan Qing cleared his throat. “Because my princess mother was here. I didn’t want her to get jealous.”

Gu Jiao said, “You’re surprisingly thoughtful.”

Shangguan Qing arched a brow. “Of course! Not everyone is like that bookworm brother of mine, so clueless about women.”

Gu Jiao said honestly, “But I think he understands the two mothers better than you do.”

Shangguan Qing’s face darkened. There was no need to expose him like that.

Gu Jiao took a folded letter out of her pouch and handed it to him. “A personal letter from Her Majesty the Emperor. You can see for yourself how she’s doing.”

Shangguan Qing snatched the letter, shot her a sidelong look, and gave a cold snort. “And you criticize me? Why didn’t you take it out earlier?”

Gu Jiao said with a straight face, “I forgot.”

Shangguan Qing: “Heh.”

As Gu Jiao and Shangguan Qing were talking, they neglected the baby in the cradle. Dissatisfied, Little Yiyi tugged on Gu Jiao’s hand.

As if to say: Don’t talk to that stinky brother, talk to me!

Gu Jiao’s lips curved into a smile, and she picked the little baby up.

Gu Xiaobao loved drinking milk, and after holding him all day, Gu Jiao carried the faint scent of milk on her body.

When Yiyi smelled the familiar fragrance, her two pudgy hands clutched at Gu Jiao’s collar, and she burrowed her face straight into Gu Jiao’s embrace.

Gu Jiao: “???”

……

Gu Jiao thought Yiyi was hungry, so she carried her to the greenhouse and handed her to Princess Xinyang.

Suddenly finding herself back in her mother’s arms, Yiyi was utterly bewildered.

It was an instinctive reaction. She hadn’t had enough playtime with her sister-in-law yet!

——but then, she was pressed firmly into her mother’s embrace.

Fine then. As long as there’s milk, all is well.

Yiyi began nursing noisily, completely forgetting her sister-in-law in the blink of an eye.

Shangguan Yan’s letter consisted of three parts: two were addressed to the two brothers, and the other to Princess Xinyang.

The letters to the two brothers mostly described the current state of the State of Yan, mentioned her ascension to the throne, and included some casual family talk. She also explained that with the great war just ended, a new sovereign on the throne, and the task of purging and reforming the ten great noble families, the entire court was in turmoil. She could not come to attend Xiao Heng and Gu Jiao’s wedding, and for that, she expressed deep regret.

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
