It was rare for Little Jing Kong to have a day off, so Xuanyuan Qi and Liao Chen also came over to Bishui Alley.

Liao Chen had been dragged by his father; otherwise, he wouldn’t have wanted to face the little monk who chanted scriptures better than any temple abbot.

Xuanyuan Qi was in the backyard, teaching the three boys martial arts, while Liao Chen lay on a rattan chair off to the side, enjoying the cool shade.

Gu Xiaobao had been carried off by Yu Ya’er to play with Grandma Zhou’s grandson, while Gu Jiao had gone to the medical hall.

Yao shi was in the kitchen, preparing some snacks for the children.

Xuanyuan Qi was teaching them the most basic entry-level fist technique. He demonstrated it once, then broke it down movement by movement for them to follow.

Little Jing Kong learned the fastest, followed by Gu Xiaoshun, while Gu Yan was the slowest, barely managing to pick it up at all.

Seeing the three children drenched in sweat, Xuanyuan Qi decided that was enough for the day.

Little Jing Kong’s natural talent surprised him. It seemed that Little Sixth had indeed left behind an exceptionally gifted descendant for the Xuanyuan Family.

When the two Gu brothers arrived in the backyard, they first greeted the Xuanyuan father and son, then Gu Xiaoshun and others, before heading to the kitchen to pay their respects to Yao shi.

“Big brother! Big brother! Look at my punches!”

Little Jing Kong couldn’t wait to show off the new fist technique he had just learned.

Both Gu Changqing and Marquis Xuanping had taught him a bit of martial arts before. Though what he learned was rather mixed, he practiced each with remarkable skill.

He truly was a diligent little child.

He finished the set of movements in one smooth, flowing sequence.

“Well, not bad at all.” Gu Chengfeng praised.

Little Jing Kong nodded so vigorously it looked like his head was about to fall off. “Yeah, yeah! I’m the best!”

Gu Xiaoshun was still unfamiliar with a few moves, so he quietly practiced on the side while Xuanyuan Qi occasionally corrected his posture.

Only Gu Yan stormed back into the house with a sullen face.

Gu Changqing followed him inside and said gently, with understanding, “Actually, I know this set of moves too. I can teach you.”

Gu Yan turned his face away with a huff. “Who wants to learn anyway?”

The moves just now didn’t require much space, so Gu Changqing demonstrated the set directly inside the room.

Even though Gu Yan pretended to be disinterested at first, he gradually found himself drawn in.

“Try it.” Gu Changqing told him.

“I’m not trying.” Gu Yan refused, unwilling to embarrass himself in front of Gu Changqing.

Gu Changqing gave a small smile, then lifted Gu Yan’s arm and guided him into the opening stance.

“I said I’m not…”

“Tighten your core.” Gu Changqing interrupted softly, his slender fingers pressing lightly against Gu Yan’s soft belly, his other hand at his thin back.

Gu Yan instinctively took a deep breath.

“Like this.” Gu Changqing moved behind him, holding his arm and guiding him through the first movement.

Nestled against his elder brother’s arm, Gu Yan could suddenly feel the details of each motion. “So that’s how it’s done?”

When he had only watched before, he could either see from the front or from the back, never the whole picture. But with Gu Changqing personally guiding his arm through the form, everything clicked into place at once.

With Gu Changqing giving him one-on-one instruction, Gu Yan finally managed to master the first half of the set Xuanyuan Qi had been teaching.

Not only that, he even got a head start on the second half. Though his movements weren’t as smooth, he could still clumsily string them together.

Immediately, his pride flared up, and he went straight to show off in front of Little Jing Kong!

Little Jing Kong was shocked as if struck by lightning, staring in disbelief.

Even his Big Brother Yan knew how to do it now?!

No way!

He had to train harder!

And thus, Bishui Alley officially entered the stage of fierce competition——

……

Gu Xiaobao didn’t return until nearly lunchtime after playing outside.

The moment he stepped into the house, he immediately started looking for his sister.

But today, his sister wasn’t there.

With his little hands clenched, he lifted his head blankly. One brother. Two brothers… a whole row of brothers.

It had been a long time since Gu Changqing last saw Gu Xiaobao. He still remembered the first time how the boy trembled like a leaf in his arms. Now that he was older, surely that wouldn’t happen anymore.

Confidently, Gu Changqing bent down and scooped up the dazed little Xiaobao.

This time, though Xiaobao didn’t shiver as he once had, his entire little body went stiff.

“Elder brother, he still seems really afraid of you. Let me hold him.” Gu Chengfeng said, taking Xiaobao into his arms.

Sure enough, as soon as he was with Gu Chengfeng, Xiaobao relaxed completely.

Unwilling to accept it, Gu Changqing tried again, picking him up once more.

Xiaobao froze stiff again.

Gu Changqing: “…”

“Hahahaha!” Gu Chengfeng laughed heartily, hands on his hips. “Elder brother! Xiaobao really doesn’t like you!”

Scooping the little one back into his arms, he said, barely concealing his pride, “Xiaobao, you like Second Brother the most, don’t you?”

Xiaobao stared at him seriously, as if considering his words.

Then suddenly, he reached out with both hands and yanked Gu Chengfeng’s ears, pulling them wide into a pair of protruding ears!

Gu Chengfeng: “…!!”

……

During the year-plus that Gu Jiao had been away, the business at Miraculous Hands Hall had been booming beyond expectation. The young apprentice Little Song, who had first come with Gu Jiao to try his luck in the capital, had now become a well-known name in his own right. Every day, many people came specifically because of his growing reputation.

Second Owner, a true genius in commerce, was already preparing to open another branch of Miraculous Hands Hall on Chang’an Street.

Meanwhile, the courtesan Mo Qianxue of the Heavenly Music House, who had once stayed at the medical hall to recuperate, had left, and Hua Xiyao had also disappeared from the capital.

Second Owner had no idea where the two of them had gone.

Some people, once parted, were gone for a lifetime.

The imperial decree announcing the earlier wedding date for Gu Jiao and Xiao Heng was finally issued. Just as Xiao Heng had said, it would be on the eighteenth day of the sixth month.

By the end of the fifth month, Marquis Gu had at last finished his assignment at the Ministry of Works. He had long since heard of the triumphant return of his father and son. After stopping by the Marquis Estate to wash up and change into fresh clothes, he planned to go pay his respects to his father.

But just then, he was met by one of Gu Jinyu’s servant girls, who came rushing to see him with a flustered look.

“What is it?” He asked with a frown.

“Lord Marquis, the young miss, she…” The servant girl stammered and hesitated, unable to get the words out.

Marquis Gu knitted his brows and went directly to Gu Jinyu’s courtyard.

Ever since Gu Jinyu’s true nature had been exposed, Marquis Gu had taken a heavy blow. He found it hard to accept that the daughter he had doted on for so many years had been so calculating.

He had really been angry with Gu Jinyu.

But when she knelt before him and tearfully poured out her grievances, saying she was only an adopted daughter of the Marquis Estate, unloved by her grandfather and brothers, and that even her mother’s heart held only her own flesh and blood, he had been moved.

She said she had no choice, that her little schemes were only to protect herself.

She had already lost everything, and only her father remained. She did not want her father to despise her.

If even her father abandoned her, then life would have no meaning.

In desperation, she tried dashing her head against a pillar, blood splattering on the spot.

Marquis Gu’s heart softened, and he forgave her.

But still, there was a knot left in his chest.

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
