Mountain Manor.

Gu Jiao had finished her battle with the man. He had one talkative mouth and she had already learned from him that he was the Seventh Protector of the Sword Lodge.

The Seventh Protector had been beaten until his mask shattered all over the ground. He fell heavily to the floor, clutching his chest as he coughed up blood again and again.

Panting heavily, he looked at Gu Jiao, his eyes filled with disbelief.

Didn’t his fellow disciples say that this girl couldn’t even defeat An Hun?

This was what they call “can’t defeat”?

This was obviously being thrashed one-sidedly!

His strength was about the same as An Hun’s, but during the exchange just now, aside from his first move, which caught her off guard and forced her back, every attack after that was useless. Once this girl went on the offensive, he never landed another blow!

The first ten moves had been evenly matched, but starting from the eleventh, he had no power to fight back in her hands.

Why was it like this!

Gu Jiao planted one foot on his chest, overlooking him like a ruler gazing at an ant on the ground. “Where is Duke An?”

The Seventh Protector let out a cold laugh, lifting his hand to wipe the blood at the corner of his mouth. “You think… I’ll tell you? I warn you… this is Sword Lodge territory… if you dare act recklessly…”

His eyes were firm. There was no way he would ever reveal anything to Gu Jiao.

Gu Jiao did not wish to waste more time on him. She withdrew her foot, and under the watchful eyes of the Sword Lodge disciples who dared not approach, she carried her bloodstained red-tasseled spear like a demon god. Step by step, she walked into the manor.

The Seventh Protector struggled to his feet. He stared coldly at Gu Jiao’s back. His five fingers clenched tightly as he gathered a surge of internal force, preparing to strike Gu Jiao’s back with all his strength!

At that moment, Gu Jiao happened to be passing by the corpse of a Sword Lodge disciple. She stomped her heel hard, and the longsword on the ground flipped into the air. She struck the hilt with her palm in reverse.

The longsword shot through the air with a whistle, piercing through the Seventh Protector’s chest before he even had time to react!

The entire process, Gu Jiao never once turned her head.

Her red-tasseled spear tapped against the ground. With her steps, the gleaming spear tip scraped against the bluestone floor, letting out a slow yet piercing screech, sending sparks scattering in its wake.

Some disciples charged toward her, but each and every one fell under her red-tasseled spear.

The Sword Lodge disciples were utterly terrified of her by now.

One disciple trembled as he said, “Hurry… hurry and report to the Sect Leader!”

The Sword Lodge had two peaks under one gate. The Sect Leader, along with the Elders, Protectors, and others, were all on the rear peak. Today, it just so happened that the Seventh Protector had been assigned to guard the front peak.

At the back gate of the front peak, Gu Jiao discovered Duke An bound hand and foot by four disciples. Just as she had suspected, they were planning to take him down the mountain through a side gate and head for another ferry crossing.

Gu Jiao swiftly dealt with the four of them, slashed apart the ropes binding Duke An, and knelt by his side, helping the unconscious Duke An up.

“Adoptive father, adoptive father.” She rested Duke An against her shoulder and checked his pulse.

Duke An slowly regained consciousness. His heavy eyelids fluttered open weakly, and he said to Gu Jiao, “JiaoJiao… go… don’t worry about me… quickly… go down the mountain…”

Gu Jiao said, “We’ll go together!”

Duke An gritted his teeth, using the last of his strength to say, “There is poison on me! It will harm… you…”

Gu Jiao had already noticed. She untied the ropes binding his legs as well and said, “This little bit of knockout poison has no effect on me. I’ll carry you down the mountain.”

As she spoke, she turned her back to him and hoisted Duke An onto her shoulders.

But just as she turned around, a ghost-like figure appeared out of nowhere and struck her chest with a palm, sending both her and Duke An flying!

“JiaoJiao!”

Duke An, for reasons he himself couldn't explain, found some reserve of strength, caught Gu Jiao, spun in midair so that he took the fall himself and held Gu Jiao tightly to his chest.

He was struck so hard that he spat a mouthful of blood on the spot.

The two of them slammed into a nearby rock; he used his hand to shelter Gu Jiao's head.

Gu Jiao's head was saved, but the enormous force of the impact still hurled her out of his arms.

Ahead of her was the cliff.

By the time he lunged, it was already too late to grab Gu Jiao.

Gu Jiao fell down completely——

“JiaoJiao——” Duke An cried out, his voice breaking, “Save her! Hurry and save her! She’s the one you’re looking for!”

——The second protector of the Sword Lodge, who had led the ambush on Gu Jiao, froze in shock.

“What? She’s the one——”

“Damn it! She can’t die!”

The Second Protector leapt to the cliff edge, but he was a step too late; he reached out and couldn't even catch a corner of her clothing.

He swayed several times, the sand and gravel under his feet tumbling down the cliff as though he himself might slide off as well.

Shaken and pale, he stared at the inky black chasm, utterly stunned.

Duke An crawled to the cliff, tears welling in his eyes, “JiaoJiao——”

“What's that sound?” In the woods, Shangguan Qing, being helped along in a limping, halting fashion by Xiao Heng, frowned.

Xiao Heng focused and lifted his head to look, “It sounds like Duke An… JiaoJiao’s in trouble!”

The cliff’s fierce wind howled and whipped so fiercely that it made people squint and could hardly keep their eyes open.

The Second Protector raised a hand to shield his eyes and stepped back a few paces.

At that moment a pale blue figure leapt from behind, and without hesitation, he jumped down the cliff; his robe caught the gale and against the dark valley, it bloomed into a breathtaking lotus of movement.

Gu Jiao kept falling.

The wind cut at her face like blades.

When the plane crashed… it felt something like this.

So this time, was she going to die as well?

Her thoughts were scattered by the wind; in a daze a strong hand grabbed her wrist.

She felt herself being pulled, and when she opened her eyes, she saw a familiar young handsome face.

“Gu Changqing?”

Gu Changqing grabbed her with one hand while his other clung to the cliff wall; however, the force of both of them falling together was not something easy to steady.

The pads of his fingers were rubbed raw against the rock, flesh torn away until white bone could be seen.

At last… he found a hold!

Gu Jiao hung suspended beneath him, and some warm liquid struck her forehead drop by drop.

She touched the liquid on her brow with her fingertips and felt it, “Gu Changqing, you’re injured.”

His hand hurt in a way that didn’t seem like his own; Gu Changqing was drenched in a cold sweat, but his tone remained steady, “I’m fine. Do you still have strength? I’ll pull you up first, hold onto me, and I’ll get you up.”

Here, a single slip would mean falling to one’s death.

They were indeed skilled, but they were human, not gods.

If they fell, they were dead.

Gu Changqing carefully hauled Gu Jiao up, set her on his back, and bound them together with his whip.

Gu Jiao said, “I can do it myself.”

Gu Changqing: “Don’t move.”

He had just seen that she had taken a palm strike; even though her armor had blocked most of the force, it still had an effect.

Gu Jiao clung to his neck and said, “But you’re hurt.”

Gu Changqing replied softly, “Which is precisely why I must carry you. Alone, I don’t have as strong a will to survive.”

Gu Jiao no longer insisted.

After a thought, she added, “I have a flame stick; I’ll light it to show you the way.”

“No need.” He glanced at his left hand, mangled and bloody, and said calmly, “I can see the way.”

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
