Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)

Gu Changqing was a general with immense willpower. The cold water and ice worked on him. But Yuan Baolin was different. She was a delicate young lady with little strength, and her resistance to drugs was pitifully low.

No matter how many pieces of ice he pressed against her hands, the cold made her uncomfortable but did nothing to ease her burning heat.

She sat in the cold water, looking up at Gu Changqing with a pitiful expression.

Gu Changqing turned his face away.

He too was enduring the torment of the drug’s effects, and he could hardly stand the sight of her drenched figure and the temptation it brought.

He crossed his legs on the floor mat, forcing himself into meditation. He recited Buddhist scriptures, chanted purification mantras, and went over the mental formulas of his martial arts… struggling to drive away every trace of improper thought from his mind.

Just as he had finally managed to suppress the burning desire once more, Yuan Baolin called his name through a choked sob, completely shattering what was left of his composure.

“Yuan Baolin!” He gritted out, fists clenched tightly as he fought not to turn around. “Don’t call me. Don’t make a sound… I’m afraid I won’t be able to stop myself from hurting you…”

Yuan Baolin said in a trembling, aggrieved voice, “Then what if… I let you hurt me?”

Gu Changqing’s breath caught; the fragile wall of his restraint crumbled even further.

He forced his voice to remain calm. “Yuan Baolin, that isn’t what you truly think. It’s the drug. This isn’t the same kind of medicine used outside… those are mild and only meant to stir desire. The one you took is much stronger. Just hold on, it’ll pass.”

Yuan Baolin pouted weakly. “And how do you know it isn’t what I truly think?”

Gu Changqing drew in a deep breath. “We agreed, from the very beginning…”

But Yuan Baolin interrupted him, her voice soft yet full of grievance. “And what if I just tricked you? Would you ever have married me if I hadn’t said all those?”

Gu Changqing’s fists clenched even tighter. “...You’re not in your right mind. You don’t even know what you’re saying.”

“Gu Changqing…”

“Yuan Baolin! Be quiet!”

But how could Yuan Baolin possibly stay quiet?

She whispered, “You don’t have to come over… just take off your clothes. I’ll look at you to quench my thirst.”

Gu Changqing nearly stumbled to the ground!

When she saw that he didn’t react, Yuan Baolin gave a soft, dissatisfied hum.

“So which of us is supposed to be the ascetic here? Why are you more restrained than me?”

“Gu Changqing, are you… incapable?”

Gu Changqing’s fists cracked audibly as he ground his teeth.

Yuan Baolin’s remaining shred of reason broke apart at that moment. She had been frail since childhood, that was why she had been sent to a Taoist temple to recuperate. Though she now seemed as healthy as anyone else, her body was still weak underneath.

What would only be a mild stimulant to others was, for her, a deadly poison.

Her vision went dark, and her body went limp, slipping beneath the surface of the water.

Gu Changqing immediately sensed something was wrong. “Yuan Baolin! Yuan Baolin! Yuan Baolin!”

He called her name three times, but there was no response. Turning sharply, he saw only the empty wooden tub. In a flash, he stood and crossed the room in two strides, scooping Yuan Baolin out of the water.

“Yuan Baolin! Yuan Baolin!” He called again but she didn’t respond. His brows furrowed as he carried her out, her slender, soft body falling weightlessly into his arms. Though she had been soaking in cold water, her skin burned against him like fire.

Her soaked clothes clung tightly to her, outlining every graceful curve.

Her scent filled his senses, leaving him breathless.

Yuan Baolin’s eyes fluttered open slightly. She looked up at him through a haze, her pale hand lifting to loop gently around his neck.

“Yuan Baolin, you…”

Before he could finish, Yuan Baolin silenced him.

Gu Changqing froze completely. The last fragment of reason he possessed slipped away from him.

His arms tightened around her, and with one motion, he turned and pressed her beneath him.

……

At the Fushou Courtyard, Old Madame Gu had risen early. She dressed herself neatly, adorned with care, and sat properly in the main hall, waiting for her grandson and his new wife to come and pay their morning respects.

However, she waited until the sun was already high in the sky, and still, no one came. At last, she couldn’t help but chuckle softly.

Grannie Zhang looked at her with a peculiar expression. “Old Madame…”

Old Madame Gu raised her handkerchief to her lips and said, “Who was on duty last night in Changqing’s courtyard? Go and call them here.”

Grannie Zhang went to Gu Changqing’s courtyard and summoned a woman surnamed Wu, the one who had drawn water and fetched the rope for Gu Changqing the night before.

When Grannie Wu entered the Fushou Courtyard, she immediately reported to Old Madame Gu about how many times the shizi had asked for water and for all sorts of… tools during the night. “...Never would’ve thought, shizi can really make a fuss.”

At that, Old Madame Gu’s smile vanished. She frowned and asked, “He didn’t wear the girl out, did he?”

Her grandson must not have such strange indulgences; if word got out, it would ruin his reputation. Besides, his bride was a young lady of the Yuan Family, a truly noble and delicate daughter of a great house.

If anything improper happened, how would they possibly explain it to the Yuan Family?

Grannie Zhang glanced at her mistress. Having served the Old Madame for many years, she understood her temper all too well. The Old Madame valued family background above all. No matter how gentle or virtuous a girl of low birth might be, Old Madame Gu would still look down on her, just like she did with Yao shi.

But when it came to a young lady of high birth, Old Madame Gu’s tolerance grew considerably.

Back when the marriage alliance with the Ling Family fell through, the Old Madame had indeed been displeased. Yet upon hearing that the new match would be with the legitimate granddaughter of Grand Secretary Yuan, that trace of irritation in her heart had vanished instantly.

Grannie Wu dared not utter another word.

Whether the girl had been “worn out” or not, how could she know? She hadn’t been inside, after all. But from what she heard outside, there had been… quite a commotion.

Grannie Zhang chuckled and said, “Old Madame, please set your mind at ease. Don’t you know shizi? He’s someone who knows how to take care of others.”

“You may go.” Old Madame Gu said to Grannie Wu.

“Yes, Old Madame.” Grannie Wu bowed respectfully and withdrew.

Old Madame Gu’s brows furrowed with worry. “Could something have really gone wrong…?”

“It won’t.” Grannie Zhang replied with a reassuring smile, handing her mistress a cup of tea to calm her nerves.

Old Madame Gu accepted the tea and took a sip. “I’ve heard Baolin is quite the talented young lady.”

Since her grandson was to marry a daughter of the Yuan Family, she had naturally looked into the girl’s background carefully. And the more she learned, the more astonished she had become. The girl was not only well-read but fluent in six languages.

Once, the capital had praised Wen Linlang as the foremost talented woman, but when compared to Yuan Baolin, she was utterly outshone.

Yuan Baolin merely kept a low profile, her brilliance hidden beneath modesty, and that very restraint made Old Madame Gu like her even more.

Grannie Zhang smiled knowingly.

At the end of the day, what truly mattered was the Young Madame’s noble birth. Even if she weren’t actually gifted, the Old Madame would not have minded.

On the contrary, had her background been humble, no amount of talent would have earned her the Old Madame’s approval.

Old Madame Gu then said, “Go to Changqing’s courtyard and tell them they don’t need to come pay respects today. Let them rest properly.”

Grannie Zhang hesitated. “What about Madame…”

She meant Yao shi. For Gu Changqing’s wedding, Yao shi had temporarily moved back into the estate and planned to stay until after the new daughter-in-law served her the bridal tea.

Old Madame Gu snorted. “No need to worry about her, she won’t mind this sort of thing.”

Old Madame Gu might not be fond of Yao shi, but she knew the woman’s temperament well. Yao shi would never pick on her daughter-in-law.

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
