In the end, Gu Changqing had no choice but to lie down inside the red gauze canopy.
The bed was very large. Yuan Baolin lay on the innermost side, while he stayed on the outer edge; there was still enough space between them to fit another person.
Yuan Baolin, her mind at ease, closed her eyes and soon drifted off to sleep.
Gu Changqing lay flat on his back, hands clasped over his abdomen, gazing faintly up at the red canopy. Her even breathing reached his ears, and the soft fragrance that belonged to her lingered in the air around his nose.
The gauze canopy trapped her scent in that small, enclosed space, and the deepening night magnified everything.
With his sight restricted, all his other senses grew sharper. Her breathing, her presence, the softness of the bed beneath him, the silky touch of the brocade quilt all seeped into his awareness, provoking the instincts of a man.
Without meaning to, his mind replayed the scene from their wedding night, her tear-streaked face beneath him, her delicate body trembling softly…
His fists tightened slightly. He drew in a deep breath, closed his eyes, and forcibly cleared his mind of all distracting thoughts.
……
On the day Gu Changqing accompanied Yuan Baolin back to her parental home, there happened to be a lantern festival on Chang’an Street.
Yuan Baolin wanted to go see it, and Gu Changqing went with her.
“I want to go too! I want to go too!” Yuan Tong exclaimed, clutching her sister’s hand.
Madame Yuan shot her younger daughter a sharp glare. No sense at all. Your sister and her husband are going to the lantern festival, what are you tagging along for?
But Yuan Tong completely missed the warning look from her mother. She had been missing her sister terribly these past few days, and now that her sister was finally home, she couldn’t bear to part with her so soon!
“Can my little sister come with us?” Yuan Baolin asked, seeking Gu Changqing’s opinion.
“Of course.” Gu Changqing replied readily, then turned to Father Yuan and Madame Yuan. “Father-in-law, Mother-in-law, please don’t worry. Once the lantern festival ends, I’ll bring them back safely.”
Yuan Tong beamed. “Elder brother-in-law, you’re the best!”
At this point, Madame Yuan could no longer stop Yuan Tong, so she had no choice but to let her go along.
On the way to Yuan Residence, Gu Changqing and Yuan Baolin shared the same carriage, but now that Yuan Tong had joined them, Gu Changqing chose to ride ahead on horseback to avoid any impropriety.
Inside the carriage, the two sisters chatted in low voices. Yuan Tong held her sister’s hand tightly and whispered, “Elder sister, tell me the truth, does elder brother-in-law treat you well?”
Yuan Baolin replied, “He’s very good to me.”
“Really?”
“Really.”
Yuan Tong nodded in relief. “Then I can rest easy.”
Gu Changqing hadn’t meant to eavesdrop, but his sharp hearing made it unavoidable. It seemed that Yuan Baolin hadn’t even told her closest sister that their marriage was only in name.
Chang’an Street was packed with people, and when their carriage reached the edge of the street, it could go no farther. They had to leave the carriage behind and continue on foot.
Yuan Baolin and her sister walked ahead, arm in arm, while Gu Changqing followed quietly behind them.
As night fell, the rows of shops along the street were ablaze with lights. Stalls on both sides of the road hung up dazzling lanterns of every shape and color, looking out over the crowd, the sea of flickering lights stretched like a glowing dragon winding through the dark.
From time to time, Yuan Baolin turned her head to glance back at him. Each time she saw him there, she gave him a faint smile before turning back to continue browsing the lanterns with her sister.
After walking for some time, a voice suddenly called out from the second floor of a nearby restaurant. Someone leaned halfway out of a window and shouted in delight toward Gu Changqing, “Elder brother?”
Gu Changqing stopped in his tracks and looked up.
The Yuan sisters also turned to see who it was.
When Yuan Tong recognized the man, her expression instantly turned to one of disdain. “You?”
Gu Chengfeng’s face darkened. “What are you doing here?”
Yuan Tong lifted her chin and huffed coldly. “I’m out watching the lanterns with my sister, why can’t I be here?”
Gu Chengfeng’s gaze landed on Yuan Baolin’s face. He greeted her politely, “Sister-in-law.”
Yuan Baolin smiled lightly. “Chengfeng.”
“Get down and greet properly.” Gu Changqing said in a low voice.
“Oh.” Gu Chengfeng obediently jumped down from the window, cupped his hands, and gave a formal salute. “Sister-in-law.”
Yuan Tong raised her chin proudly and let out a smug little “Humph!”
Gu Chengfeng cast her a glance and scoffed, “I wasn’t greeting you.”
Gu Changqing’s elder brotherly aura burst forth. “Watch your mouth.”
Gu Chengfeng pursed his lips.
Yuan Baolin quickly smoothed things over. “Chengfeng, are you also here for the lantern festival? Why don’t you join us?”
“Uh… I…” Gu Chengfeng’s eyes flickered.
He wasn’t here to enjoy lanterns, he was here on a mission.
Having been away from the capital for many days, the new generation of thieves was already rising up. If he didn’t pull off a few more big heists soon, his title as the number one thief in the martial world would be gone.
Yuan Baolin noticed his hesitation and said with poise, “If you have something to do, go ahead.”
Gu Changqing’s eyes turned icy as he looked at him.
It was as if his gaze said: Your sister-in-law invited you for the first time, just try refusing her and see what happens.
He could pretend to be Yuan Baolin’s husband, yes, but that was built on a foundation of respect. He would never allow Yuan Baolin to be slighted.
What’s more… he was already in the wrong for breaking their prior agreement, so he could not let her suffer even the smallest grievance.
With that silent understanding exchanged between brothers, Gu Chengfeng instantly broke into a smile. “No, no, I’m fine. I was just thinking, it’s rare for you and sister-in-law to come out together, wouldn’t my tagging along be a bother?”
Yuan Baolin smiled. “Not at all. Tong’er’s with us too.”
“Elder sister, I don’t want to…”
Yuan Tong had only gotten halfway through her sentence before Yuan Baolin’s sharp, knife-like glance shut her right up.
“…Fine.” She muttered reluctantly.
The group of four moved on.
The lantern festival that day was exceptionally lively. There were stalls selling lanterns, others setting up stages for plays, and still others performing tricks and acrobatics on the streets.
In the open space in front of a rice shop, a burly shirtless man held a sword in one hand and a wine jug in the other. After taking a long, wild swig, he suddenly tilted his head back and sprayed something upward.
The crowd thought he was spitting wine, but instead, a long jet of flame burst from his mouth.
Gasps of amazement rippled through the onlookers.
Yuan Tong clapped her hands in excitement.
Gu Chengfeng shook his head. Childish.
If that girl were here, she would have seen through the trick instantly.
The four of them continued walking. Just then, a small mishap occurred, the fire-breathing performer accidentally spewed his flame onto a passerby.

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
