Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)
Ever since Xiao Heng took over the Cabinet, he had always conducted affairs in a high-profile manner while keeping a low profile as a person.
He simplified all unnecessary formalities whenever he could and never put on airs.
Yet today, for the first time ever, the esteemed Chief Grand Secretary had announced that he would be summoning everyone one by one into his private office for a talk?
The two Associate Grand Secretaries, the three other lower-ranked Grand Secretaries of the Cabinet, and several Palace Secretariat Officials all gathered outside the Chief Grand Secretary’s middle hall, exchanging bewildered looks, unable to understand what was going on today.
“Could it be that we’ve committed some mistake lately and he’s caught hold of something against us?” Asked Associate Grand Secretary Liu.
He had originally been a trusted aide of Grand Preceptor Zhuang.
After the Grand Preceptor’s downfall, he had abandoned the losing side and turned to the Emperor, pledging his loyalty with sincerity.
Another Associate Grand Secretary surnamed Zhang had been involved in a more serious case; even after defecting, he could not be pardoned and was dismissed and investigated.
His replacement, Associate Grand Secretary Wu, had been promoted from among the Cabinet’s secretaries.
Associate Grand Secretary Wu pondered aloud, “We haven’t done anything wrong recently... could it be that the Chief Grand Secretary found out I promoted one of my relatives?”
When the water was too clear, no fish could live in it.
No dynasty could ever ensure that all its officials were spotless. These few might have their little schemes, but none were parasites of the state.
Xiao Heng usually turned a blind eye to such minor matters; as long as they didn’t go too far, he wouldn’t interfere.
“If both Cabinet Elders don’t seem to understand the situation, then we——” The speaker was Grand Secretary Kong from the Wuying Palace.
There were six Grand Secretary positions in total within the Cabinet, but only the Chief Grand Secretary and the two Associate Grand Secretaries to the Chief position were entitled to be addressed respectfully as “Cabinet Elders.”
The remaining three Grand Secretaries lower in rank from the Wuying Palace, Wenyuan Pavilion, and Eastern Pavilion, were referred to as “Junior Cabinet Elders.”
“That’s right.”
“Indeed.”
The Grand Secretaries from the Wenyuan Pavilion, and Eastern Pavilion sighed and nodded.
Associate Grand Secretary Liu said, “There’s no need for the three Grand Secretaries to worry. The Chief Grand Secretary isn’t someone of unpredictable temper. Since he summoned us today, it must be to inquire about recent official matters.”
Associate Grand Secretary Wu quickly agreed, “Exactly, exactly. Ever since the Chief Grand Secretary took office, he’s never quarreled with us in earnest. Even when something went wrong in our daily affairs, he merely offered a mild reminder. Today... perhaps something good is afoot.”
“I hope that’s the case.” Grand Secretary Kong said.
Before long, the scribe who served beside the Chief Grand Secretary came out and called the first name, Associate Grand Secretary Liu.
Although he had just been saying there was nothing to worry about, his face turned pale the moment his name was called.
Somehow, he felt that today’s atmosphere was far too solemn.
Could something serious truly have happened?
Was the Chief Grand Secretary grooming his own faction, summoning them privately to have each one secretly pledge allegiance?
And if one refused to submit, would the Chief Grand Secretary ruthlessly eliminate them behind the scenes?
Forcing himself to calm down, he stepped into the Chief Grand Secretary’s office.
Xiao Heng sat in an official’s high-backed chair behind his desk.
This youngest Chief Grand Secretary in the State of Zhao’s history had proven with his own ability what it meant to be extraordinarily gifted at a young age.
At thirteen, he became the Young Chief of the Imperial Academy.
After being framed and cast out into the common world, he returned to the capital at seventeen after ranking first in the provincial exam, then became the top scholar in the imperial examinations at nineteen, and that same year entered the Hanlin Academy, then the Cabinet, then the Ministry of Justice.
By twenty-one, he had ascended to the position of Chief Grand Secretary of the Cabinet.
He was a legend of the State of Zhao, one whose name would surely be recorded in history.
“Your subordinate greets the Honorable Chief Grand Secretary.” Associate Grand Secretary Liu saluted, not daring to show even the slightest disrespect despite the other’s young age.
“Ung, wah~”
A soft, milky cry suddenly came from beside Xiao Heng, and Associate Grand Secretary Liu froze in surprise.
His sense of smell was poor, so he hadn’t noticed the faint fragrance of milk filling the room, but his ears were working just fine.
Gathering his courage, he glanced toward the side of the Chief Grand Secretary, and heavens above!
Two babies!
Xiao Cong and Xiao Yan were lying side by side in a cradle beside the desk. The weather was no longer cold, so they were no longer swaddled.
Xiao Cong remained the quiet little gentleman he always was, while Xiao Yan was sucking on her fingers.
The soft baby sound from earlier had come from her.
“Those, those are the young master and young miss of my Lord’s household?” He asked in a daze.
“Mm.” Xiao Heng replied indifferently, his expression dignified and composed.
Associate Grand Secretary Liu was utterly dumbfounded.
What in the world? You brought your babies to your work?
So the reason you called me into your office was——
“Hmm.” Xiao Heng gave a meaningful glance to his scribe.
The scribe immediately understood, stepped forward holding two red-dyed eggs, and said pleasantly to Associate Grand Secretary Liu, “These are red eggs from the Chief Grand Secretary, for you.”
Associate Grand Secretary Liu: “???”
He had seen people hand out red eggs two days after giving birth, but two months later, still handing out red eggs?
Without a change in expression, Xiao Heng said calmly, “I mainly forgot to give them out last time. I’m just making up for it now.”
Associate Grand Secretary Liu: So after all this fuss, you just wanted to distribute red eggs? You could’ve said so earlier! Look at how terrified everyone was!
“Are they cute?” Xiao Heng asked, straight-faced.
“Cute… very cute!” Associate Grand Secretary Liu was beginning to question the meaning of life.
First, your father showed off his daughter, and now you’re showing off your dragon-and-phoenix twins.
What in the world is wrong with your whole family!
The second to be called in was Associate Grand Secretary Wu.
He too received two red eggs, and in return, he had to offer a full basket of auspicious compliments praising the twins, making sure that none of it were a repeat of those of Assistant Minister Liu.
Thus, the Grand Secretaries of the Cabinet and a few other officials endured the first “literary examination” of the year——an impromptu test of creative baby flattery.

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
