Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)
Because the dragon-and-phoenix twins had departed ahead of schedule, the original plan to set out three days later was changed.
The couple were to leave at dawn instead.
“Mother, don’t worry too much about me.” Xiao Heng began to say wistfully, “I’ll be back before you know…”
Before he could finish his sentimental farewell, Princess Xinyang casually tossed his bundle of luggage onto the carriage and said, “Remember to bring Yan’er and Cong’er back with you when you return to the State of Zhao.”
Xiao Heng: “…”
Was he still her most beloved, most precious son?
So this was what it meant when people said love could fade?
……
Elsewhere, Chang Kun and Chang Jing were also preparing for their journey.
Earlier that morning, Chang Kun had gotten into a fight with Marquis Xuanping.
It had all started because Marquis Xuanping refused the betrothal gifts Chang Kun had brought, declaring bluntly that he didn’t have a daughter to marry off to Chang Jing.
Chang Kun had replied, “Our Hidden Night Island doesn’t mind waiting for Little Yiyi to grow up.”
And then, he was promptly beaten up by Marquis Xuanping.
Now limping out of the courtyard with a swollen bump on his head, with his nose bruised and face battered, Chang Kun turned to his son and declared solemnly, “Son… for the sake of your lifelong happiness… I didn’t fight back. Not even once.”
Chang Jing looked utterly aggrieved. “I never said I wanted to marry anyone! Didn’t I lie to you back then just to get off the island——”
The next instant, he too was smacked squarely by his father.
——After all these years, he had finally experienced what it meant to be beaten by one’s own father.
Father and son now sat facing each other inside the carriage, each holding a handkerchief-wrapped ice cube against their swollen, pig-like faces.
Meanwhile, one-year-and-four-month-old Little Yiyi was in Princess Xinyang’s arms, waving her tiny hand to bid them farewell. “Uncle Tang(Chang), bye-bye! Brother Tang(Chang) Jing, bye-bye!”
She was trying to say goodbye, but being still so small, her words didn’t quite come out right.
The two men waved back at her with amused smiles.
Little Yiyi had always liked Chang Jing, but after his father’s beating, Chang Jing’s face looked so pitifully bruised and swollen that he ended up scaring the poor girl into tears.
……
Before long, Duke An’s carriage arrived as well.
Little Jing Kong hopped down energetically and dashed over to Gu Jiao’s carriage, his short legs pattering rapidly. “JiaoJiao! I brought Father here!”
His form of address had changed alongside Gu Jiao’s.
Once Gu Jiao started calling Duke An “Father,” Little Jing Kong followed suit, calling him “Father” too.
Gu Jiao gazed at his handsome little face which had grown sharper and more spirited over time, her lips curving into a faint smile. “Jing Kong, you did wonderfully.”
Xiao Heng: Heh.
You’re almost eight years old!
Acting cute at this age is shameful!
With a mild tone, Xiao Heng asked, “You’re going to the State of Yan too?”
Little Jing Kong crossed his arms over his chest and said proudly, “Of course I am! Wherever JiaoJiao goes, I go too!”
Xiao Heng asked blandly, “Don’t you have studies to attend?”
Little Jing Kong replied confidently, “That’s what you are for!”
The corner of Xiao Heng’s mouth twitched. “…What about your martial training?”
Little Jing Kong grinned and spread his hands. “That’s what Long Yi’s for!”
Xiao Heng was left speechless.
——When your whole family consisted of overachieving powerhouses, the access to resources really was something else.
Still standing with his hands on his hips, Little Jing Kong puffed up his chest and declared with self-satisfied pride, “Humph! Don’t even think about monopolizing JiaoJiao for yourself!”
Xiao Heng didn’t bother arguing with him. Instead, he spoke calmly, “Little Eleven.”
In the next instant, the horse king, Little Eleven, galloped over like a flash of lightning.
As it neared the gates of the Marquis Estate, it made a sharp turn so sudden that its hooves nearly split apart!
Little Jing Kong’s attention was instantly snatched away. “Huh? Little Eleven’s here! JiaoJiao, can I ride Little Eleven?”
“Alright.” Gu Jiao replied with an indulgent smile.
Completely unaware that he had just walked straight into his bad brother-in-law’s trap, someone hopped onto Little Eleven with heroic enthusiasm!
At the very front of the convoy, the Black Wind King strode forward with icy eyes and an aura of unstoppable dominance.
Even though it wasn’t heading into battle and was merely walking casually down the bustling street, its presence still exuded the sharp, formidable air of iron and steel, of clashing blades and thundering hooves.
Seventeen years old now, it was fortunate that time had not yet dulled its power.
The great steed was still capable of creating more legends to come.
Gu Jiao had forbidden galloping within the city streets, which left both Little Jing Kong and Little Eleven unbearably restless.
When they finally left the city gates and reached the wide, flat stretch of the official road, the boy and the horse could no longer hold back and broke into a full sprint together.
“Little Eleven! Faster! Even faster!”
“Whoo-hoo! I’m flying!”
“Hahahaha!”
“Bad brother-in-law can’t catch me now!”
The entire official road echoed with his high-spirited laughter and gleeful shouts, filling the air with his carefree, mischievous energy.
Horse king: I’d like to remind you, JiaoJiao can’t catch up either, you know…
But Little Jing Kong’s triumph didn’t last long. Before he knew it, dark clouds rolled in and a sudden downpour drenched both boy and horse until they looked like two sorry, dripping chickens.
There had been an unusually large amount of rain this year.
When it finished raining in the State of Zhao, it rained in the State of Yan; when it stopped at the borders, it started again in the central plains.
Steward Zheng’s chronic rheumatism had even flared up because of it!
While the travelers suffered miserably along the muddy road, the dragon-and-phoenix twins were having quite the opposite experience, lying comfortably within the most resplendent palace in the State of Yan, the Fenglin Palace.
They nestled into soft, warm bedding and were covered with smooth, silken blankets, enjoying the most luxurious care possible, with ten wet nurses attending to their every need.
The only problem was that the twins had grown accustomed to formula milk and refused to drink breast milk. So, the wet nurses’ only job was to coax them to sleep.
At first, both Shangguan Yan and Ye Qing were troubled about what to feed the children. But then, in a stroke of bizarre luck, Ye Qing accidentally knocked the little medicine chest off the table.
The little medicine chest hit the floor with a clack, and promptly spat out a can of milk powder.
Then, after another little clack, it produced two baby bottles as well.
Ye Qing stared at the scene, utterly dumbfounded. “…”

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
